Thank you Scott(greasemonkey) and Tony(teeds) for checking out and delivering a new to me KTM 300 exc !!
Whoooo hooooooooooo
Ok PhotoJoJo another friend Matt and I went to Red River yesterday
(3/3/08). I think we should have called it the Mud and high water run but as I pulled up it was snowing. Not enough to catch it on the camera but it was snowing. It was also snowing when we left.
So I got there a little before Chris and Matt. I begin sorting out the 300. I needed to move the shift lever and mess with the bark busters. A ride down the parking lot to the sand bar and back to see how things are. Luckly the rider before me was a little heavier than me and a little more aggresive rider so most everything would work for me. If it didn't I could grow into it.
Shortly after my return to the truck the BOYS show up and start putting the layers on. I procceded to get out extra gloves because I knew we would be getting wet. LOL little did I know how wet.....
After the gore tex was on and the bikes started we head down to the sand bar. Chris wanted to ride the east side. I figured it was a good place to start because of all the sand. With the sand being wet we would have a good base. The problem was all the rain and the creek. I told Chris the furthur upstream the less water there would be. We checked several places along the sand bar which all looked pretty deep. As Chirs pulled up to the fairly level north corner of the big sand bar area I decided to see just how deep it really was. I hit the edge of the water in 3rd gear wtih a 3/4 height wheelie. I am flying across high and dry till three quarters of the way to the other side. My rear tire hits a very deep spot(probably a bank) and slams the front end down. As the front tires hits,it splashes me with ice cold water in about 30 degree weather. I am laughing before I pop out onto the other side. As I am truning around to watch Chrs comes across and I basically miss him. He is drenched but on both wheels. Matt decides to be a little more conservative on his KTM 400. No wheelie for him. As he hits the deep spot 3/4's of the way through the creek his front fender goes under rushing water. He has enough mometum to keep going through but the water flies up the fender and directly in the neck of his gore tex jacket and into his helmet and goggles. He is drenched but laughing and saying this is just not normal...:zen:
So from here we head east up into the sand area. I forgot just how slick R.R. can be. Hopefully we have some video of the escapde. Chris is editing it as we speak. I think all of us nearly went down a million times. Matt on the other hand did go down about 5-7 times but what a trooper. I know I would have been plum worn out picking that bike up as many times as he had. He also was kick starting it everytime. Soemthing was wrong with the magic button.
Up by the barn I saw Chris go through a mud hole that was pretty deep so I decide to hit it at and angle. As soon as my front wheel hit the rut I started to go down. The next thing I think I will feel is a ton of very cold water. I think I turned a little into the direction I was falling and I know I hit the throttle. Suprisingly enough the bike jumps back up straight and all I had to contend with was riding through the weeds. WOW was that a close one. Ok note to self just deal with the water holes.
Chris had a beautiful bike launch up one of the hills. I think he made it about 3/4 of the way up and just hit full throttle while dismounting off the back on purpose. We then drug the bike on up the hill. We got a little smarter with Matt and found a way around.
I have to say once we got away from the top of the hill and started riding it was really a decent day for being 30 degrees and wet. Of course we ran though some mud that was atleast 3-5 icnhes deep and hundreds of yards long.LOL Your front end would bury while you body flies forward and your rear tire then start would spinning like crazy. What a hoot. You had to get back on the rear wheel with weight and get going before you went down. I had a riot.
I did get the bike into 4th a couple times. I am thinking this 300 is going to be a ton of fun. I can't wait to ride it when it is dry.
I am sure Chris J will post some comments sooner or later.
I have a few parking lot pics I will post and sooner or later we will have some 1st time video from us.
