Man dies in fall from Ben White-Interstate 35 flyover

By Joshunda Sanders | Thursday, March 6, 2008, 06:06 AM

Austin police say a man died when he was thrown off his motorcycle from the tallest Ben White Boulevard overpass at Interstate 35 onto the median below.

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on the ramp that goes from East Ben White Boulevard to I-35 northbound, Lt. J. Hines said this morning. A witness called police at 2:34 a.m., he said. Witnesses said he was speeding, hit the retaining wall and was ejected from the motorcycle, police said.

The man’s name and age have not been released by authorities, pending notification of his family and positive identification. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say this was the eighth traffic fatality in Austin this year.

The service road was shut down for a few hours this morning while officials investigated, but it was re-opened before the morning rush hour.

Yep...those flyovers are scary...especially when raining :(

They have those metal expansion joints sometimes at the apex of the turn. I don't care what tires you have...hit those leaned over when wet during a high-speed turn and you will go down or at least have a strong slide jolt!

Sometimes, if you add lots of wind which is typical for the spring time, the turbulence vortex caused by the high walls is even worse. I would not mind those walls a little higher....

I have noticed the dark spots on the turns, when diesel has spilled out on them from overloaded filling trucks for TxDoc. Diesel is often a brownish splotch on the road...and looks shiny after it has rained....not fun to ride over.

Those things have always scared me. We've got a couple now that connect Mines Road Loop 20 and IH35. Those things bug me in my car. We had a semi rear end a small truck on one of em, the only thing that kept the truck from going over was that it snagged on the wall, IIRC. No sir, Idont like it
