After looking at all the fun "Gas Station" pix, I thought of a thread that might be some fun for everyone. We'll call it "Where Am I?" and the process is simple. I'll start by posting a picture of a place in Texas that has my motorcycle in it. Your job is to guess where that picture was taken. First person to post the correct answer then gets to post their place with their bike in it in Texas. Next person to guess correctly then posts their location and so forth. If the thread goes too long in the eyes of the current picture poster, they should give some hints as to the location. Enough to steer us in the right direction, but not enough as to just flat give it away. Also, try not to post some obscure place that has little chance of anyone being able to identify the location. Then again, those could be kind of fun with the right 'hints' along the way. It's NOT a game of Marco-Polo. There has to be a reasonable chance that many of us KNOW that location.

And make the filename something other than the location name! It's too easy to look at the picture properties and guess from that...

This could be a fun way to see some nice stuff in Texas, then find out where it is by collective effort. Maybe some of us will then go visit that place since we might have not known if it's whereabouts. The picture can be a building, place, structure, odd sculpture, interesting sign, just about anything that has some permanence to it!

Also, only the person who's turn it is can post the "Where Am I" picture. (They control the 'ball') Let's not turn this into everyone posting a picture all at the same time. You'll have to do a bit of reading to see who's in control and if you guess correctly first, then YOU get to post!

Note 1: IF you venture to take a stab at the location, KEEP CHECKING THE THREAD until either you are determined the winner or excluded. Some correct posters have gone up to a week or more without checking back and posting up their picture stalling the fun. Please, if you guess, then keep tabs on the thread and be ready to post where you are as the winner. I'd suggest a few in the 'queue already hosted somewhere so you just need to drop the link and watch.

The new winner will have 24 hours to post up their Where Am I pic from the time control is passed from the current ball holder to the new one. That will give everyone a reasonable amount of time to dig up a pic (hopefully they've got one in the queue). If the new ball holder can't make the 24 hours, post up you don't have a pic and pass it to someone on the CREDITS section. If nobody is in the CREDITS section, open it up to the next post, a friend, a newbie, but let it be clearly known your intent.

Another hint: Robert E Lee's last command in the US ARMY.

It's Fort Mason. That was Lee's last command before being recalled to DC by Winfield Scott.

Lee was offered command of the US Army, but chose to return to his native State as hostilities were imminent between the States.

It was the Robert E. Lee hint. Lee is one of my favorite engineers. Many of his canal works are still in use today in the St. Louis area. However, he is not one of my favorite generals and I opine to this day that the Lee 'template' is wrong-headed for developing military leaders.

CONGRATULATIONS! Mike In Clear Lake is our winner and now has the honor to post his "Where Am I" shot next.

The reference to Historic Fort was Fort Mason was one of a series of outposts and there's a Coopers BBQ in Mason.

Fort Mason, Mason Texas
Established July 6, 1851 by the U.S. Army as a protection to the frontier. Named in honor of Lieut. George T. Mason, killed in action near Brownsville, April 25, 1846. Albert Sidney Johnston, George H. Thomas, Earl Van Dorn and Robert E. Lee, of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry, were stationed here at intervals from 1856 to 1861. Evacuated by Federal troops, March 29, 1861 and reoccupied after the Civil War until 1869. (1936)

That's a good way to manage it so we don't have dozens of people posting photos simultaneously and then no one know which photo is being replied to. That'll keep it one at a time and it determines who posts the next photo clue.

Ok, I'm at the reins... but I have to either find a picture that I haven't yet narrated or go somewhere and take a new one... hmm...

What's my deadline for getting a pic up?

Well, I'd say with the bazillion pictures you take there's ONE somewhere in your collection that hasn't been narrated yet so go find it, post it up and let us figure out where it is. I think for the thread's lifecycle, having a picture that keeps people guessing and you providing hints along the way is much better than no pic to figure out or be viewed by others.

Remember, the intent isn't to 'stump' folks. Rather, post a picture you like, the location is reasonably accessable to the significant majority of riders, and does in fact have a high probability of being figured out by others who have ridden past that same spot and remember the object of the photo. I'm just waiting for the one I recognize, but don't remember where it is!

Besides, who cares if it gets figured out early? Then someone else gets to post a pic and we start over. Post. Guess. Repeat.

Your call..... :trust:

mmm, so we got no ZZ top fans. Master of Sparks is the song title, one referance to a road in this song. You must know a bit about the origin of words and a bit about a town and how it got its name also referanced earlier in this thread.
This pretty much gives it away!

Man, I'm liking this thread!

As with the others, I haven't seen this, but it appears to be a transfer storage bldg on a rail line thats in good condition based on the railbed appearance. What appears to be an old bridge trestle could possibly be a concrete bunker????? The high-tension power lines in the background also give something to ponder.

You are headed in the right direction with the exception of the trestle part.

No, but it is in the gulf coast region and that was a really good guess.

Hwy 6 is 475 miles long!

Place by the cliffs (http://www.askoxford.com/firstnames/clifton?view=uk)

98 refered to a town in a early post (http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/MM/hjm13.html)
The origin of the community's name is somewhat obscure. Commissioner Jasper N. Mabray proposed the name, which according to legend recognized both Meridian Creek and Meridian Knobs, previously named by Erath for their proximity to the ninety-eighth meridian. The ninety-eighth meridian, however, passes through only a tiny portion of the northwestern corner of Bosque County; nonetheless, the most likely explanation is that the commissioners believed their town lay near a meridian.

Highway 36 near Comanche??

Actually, there's a companion one I've taken a picture of but don't remember exactly where it is. It was either on a trip coming back through the panhandle around Aspermont or Hamlin, or I saw it on a trip around the YO Ranch down South. When I get home this weekend I"ll see if I can figure out where it is. But there ARE two of them.

Okay so I'm breaking the rules just a bit.... This picture "technically" isn't in confines of TX but they are only a few feet away so does it count? Anyway, I'd like to know which road this sign happens to be on.

Is it the same one El Guero took these pics at?
I still don't know where the heck it is, but the sign looks the same.

I've no idea where it is but dang Bill, I love those "vintage" bikes your buddies have. They look so pristine, I thought it was a really old pic until I saw the Warrior.

Once someone guesses it, I'll have to post up a before and after pic of the KZ. My buddy Gary did a 100% restoration on it after rescuing it from a field.

I don't have a clue. The angle of the sun against the trees makes me think your driving easterly, (the sun looks higher opposite the direction the bikes are facing), but that is far to green for west texas, I think.

I am searchin the map right now for a North East Texas road that crosses the state line into either LA, OK, or AR. One that would have you making your way west (towards Dallas) but just happens to allow for the sun to set behind you because of a curve in this spot.

Your hints stink by the way:-P

You're getting close. And I will admit that the shadows are a bit deceiving since the trees are blocking most of the sun. So one more hint... we were heading due south when we found this, and I don't think you went far enough NE just yet.

So close, but still too far West. But your options are getting quite a bit smaller now.

And yes, I was traveling for work this morning then landed and got thrust right into the thick of things. So this is the first break I've really got since 5 AM today. Just think... my first break and I thought of you all!!!!:trust:

DANNYROTH

You are correct, Janet, this building was built by Mr. Kirby, of timber and oil fame, and has seen use as a church meeting facility and as the Peachtree Village town hall. The surrounding campgrounds are a beautiful setting.

I have rented a meeting room at the site to use as an off-site training and teambuilding facility. Some of my guys were a bit put out because the whole site is a No Smoking area. They would pile into a truck and go down to the farm road to smoke during breaks.
