Man dies in Fort Worth motorcycle crash
STAR-TELEGRAM REPORT

http://www.star-telegram.com/news/story/559274.html

FORT WORTH -- A 53-year-old man was killed overnight when he crashed his motorcycle on the Summit Avenue entrance ramp to Interstate 30, police said.

Ricky Meza of Fort Worth was identified by the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.

He was pronounced dead at 12:36 a.m. at Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital, where he was taken after the accident, which happened 30 minutes earlier, according to reports.

Meza's 25-year-old son, Edward, told police that he and his father were riding their motorcycles home from a bar when the accident happened, said Sgt. Rodney Bangs, supervisor of the Traffic Investigation Unit.

Bangs said Ricky Meza was entering I-30 from the Summit Avenue entrance when "he struck a curb, lost control of the motorcycle and was ejected."

The man did not wear a helmet, Bangs said.

Edward Meza, Bangs said, was right behind his father.

"He locked up his brakes and jumped off his motorcycle in an effort to get to his father quickly," Bangs said.

The son, he added, was slightly injured.

"He was obviously upset," Bangs said. "He saw it occur and tried to do what he could to aid his father."

Edward Meza was also taken to Harris to be treated for his injuries, Bangs said.

Investigators will check to see if alcohol might have contributed to the accident because the men had been at a bar, Bangs said. He added, however, that speed may have also caused the accident.
Hope that neither of them were riding under the influence, that can only magnify the things that can go wrong while riding.

Its tough the son had to witness the crash, but also good that he was with his dad for his final moments. I hope the family finds some comfort in this. Sad news.

Amen. It's only stupid (shouldn't be illegal) to ride bear (and empty) headed.

I was a charter member of the now-defunct "Saved by the Helmet Club". Dumped on my pointy head at 70 MPH.

When I was a kid, I had a friend who was member of a family where every member rode. Mother, Father, 2 sisters and 2 brothers. They were avid riders and took family trips, each aboard their own bike. Returning from one of these trips the mother, father and I think one of the kids was killed by a car, I don't remember the circumstances but I do remember how it effected my friend.

I can only imagine the grief and the second guessing, should we have worn helmets, should we have stayed out of the bar, will only make it worse.

It's easy to make assumptions based on the information in the reporting. Whatever the causes of the incident, it probably could have been avoided, a fact that will live with the son for the rest of his life.

Regardless, there was a motorcycle related fatality, and it affects the whole two-wheeled community.

RIP Sr. Meza!
