View Full Version : East Texas Butt Burner March 5th

Howdy,

:tab It's that time again! Time to head into the Piney Woods of East Texas to see the colors and sniff the smells of Springtime!! Sure, I know that there are a few amongst us that consider a 400-450 mile ride a mere butt tingler... but for the rest of you, if you're up for it, I'll lead the way!

:tab This ride will be starting here in Huntsville on Saturday morning, March 5th. You will need to arrive at our home by 9:30am with a full tank of gas and ready to ride. Kickstands go up at 10:00am and we won't be waiting around for stragglers. We will stop for lunch on the way, probably between 1:00-2:00pm. So you may want to bring a few snack bars if you have an early breakfast. We will be stopping every 75-100 miles for gas and a break. Depending on the group, we should be back in Huntsville between 6:00-8:00pm. The route will be around 400-450 miles depending on how fast we are moving. I will occasionally modify the route on the fly based on how things are going.

:tab Our home address is:

1617 Woodland Lane
Huntsville, Tx. 77340

936-295-0187

:tab For anyone coming from out of town, there is a nice Comfort Inn only two blocks away from our home. We usually go out for a group dinner Friday evening. If enough people are staying over Saturday evening after the ride, we will go out again.

:tab There will be two groups running on this ride. There will be a long route led be me at a quick (but sane) pace. Then there will be a shorter and slower route led by Dower.

I'm in for this. It's the anniversary of the first time I rode (although as a passenger) with TWT! This was the ride that really hit home and made me want to get a bike!

All issues with my knee should be resolved by then. As long as that is the case, and the weather holds, I will be in. Cathy, the girls and a bunch of their friends are going to see Gretchen Wilson at the Rodeo that day so it is a "free" kitchen pass. No tradeoffs or honey dos required :-D

They may be having a sleepover afterwards so I may need to stay in Huntsville

btw...I'll be in the slower group

:tab Nothing wrong with being in the slower group :-) Better there than in a ditch cause you tried to run with a faster group!! For the cause of sparing you from a sleepover, we might be able to come up with some couch space ;-)

Adios,

Never rode with you Scott. How fast is fast? In other words, how much above the speed limit we talking here?

Personally, I like a brisk pace (5-10 over) but to some guys "fast" means leaned way over n' draggin pegs. Not my cup-o-tea.

Scott goes just fast enough to lean over and drag his luggage on the BMW. :-)

Squeaky
02-07-2005, 07:06 PM
Actually, he doesn't go THAT fast - just doesn't slow down for the curves. He keeps a constant pace through much of the route and never leaves anyone behind. Trust me, I'm usually at the back.

Hey Squeaky,

I'm just a little gun shy as I lost a good friend up near Gilmer a couple of years back when we were riding together in a "fast" group. I'm not worried about me, necessarily, but rather being put in a situation where I need to do CPR on someone again. Believe me, it sucks when it don't work out. It suck even more if its a close friend.

:tab Figure 5-10 over. And like Squeaky said, I generally run a constant pace. I don't do the corners at 100%. I wait at all route change locations. So if you don't see me waiting, don't turn off the road you are on ;-) I will also wait at questionable intersections where I think someone might be tempted to go the wrong way. If the group gets spread out after a series of corners, I will usually slow up on the straights to wait for the group to reform. I DO NOT scream down the straights like some guys like to do. My goal is for everyone to have a good time AND get home without incident.

:tab But for the fast group I would like it to stay folks that are pretty experienced. I like to use the PACE method of riding for rides like this. If in doubt, hang with the second group. You will still get to do some great roads and have a good time!

How much shorter?

And as for slower I'm assuming at the limit or possibly a little under?

Tourmeister
02-10-2005, 12:51 AM
:tab Maybe 200-250 miles instead of the 400-450. Slower in that most of the riders in that group will be relative newbs to riding. So pretty close to the speed limit and slow in the corners.

This is sounding very tempting to me for a number of reasons.

1) PACE riding is fun
2) Seeing roads I haven't seen
3) Seeing people I've never seen
4) Huntsville ain't that far from me.

I wonder if I can talk StoneTriple into doing this with me?

2) Seeing roads I haven't seen

I've ridden on two east Texas rides with Scott and let me tell you they are a BLAST. I grew up in Houston and had no idea that roads like that exsisted in east Texas.

Every so often during the ride depending on what riders do in front of you it may produce an accordian/slinkey effect if they slow too much in the corners then on the straights or fast sweepers you can wick it up at your own wrisk.

Scott has said the slowest position in the fast group is right behind Scott. I've ridden in that position(actually I was 3rd in the group, 2nd behind Scott) and found this to be true. It's still fast because of being bombarded with curves and scenery.

Scott also communicates with the group any known hazards such as decreasing radius turns that might surprize someone.

Did I say it is a BLAST.....My face looked like this on the last one

I just looked, it appears that there is not a Volleyball tournament that day. Put me down as a long shot. I too rode with Scott and his band of hoodlums for the first time a year ago on this ride. Great way to knock the rust off your riding skills after not riding much for a few days of winter.

My only advice for those who have not ridden in a group much, ride smooth, ride your pace and practice your cornering skills.

You will have a good time.

I've already requested the day off so I am a VERY tentative maybe.
1. I don't know when the bike will arrive.
2. I need to get "some" miles under my belt before I attempt this.
3. Working in retail it's hard to get Saturdays off.
4. I "really" want to do this.
5. This will be enough miles to get me to my 6000 mile service point.

I'm planning on making this ride.

I enjoy Scott's butt burner rides alot. The group rides at a pace which doesn't cry out 'I wanna go to jail' but is yet fast enough to demand attention thru the more technical stretches of the route.
Another characteristic of these rides I enjoy is that stops are kept to a minimum.....the emphasis of these occaissions is placed on seat time.

-BW8/249 to Kings will be right at about 45 min.

-I have no idea how long it takes you boys to eat, but you can swallow faster if time becomes an issue. Might want to let the waitress know you're on a schedule just in case.

:tab Dr. Blackbird, if King's is busy, you will have a hard time getting in/out in 45 minutes if you eat a full breakfast (more than Coffee and CinBun). If you ride straight up here, there is an IHOP two minutes from the house. They can get you in/out much faster, albeit at a higher price ;-) IHOP is on the left right before you reach I-45 as you enter town on Hwy 30 coming from FM 1791.

149->1774->30

:tab That would be 149 -> 1791 -> Hwy 30. FM 1774 is over between Anderson and Plantersville ;-)

:tab Webman12, it is exit 116. Turn right at the light when you get on the feeder. Go down the hill to the next light and turn right onto Normal Park. There is a Brookshire Bro's on the corner here. Go about three blocks to the first stop sign and turn left on 19th St. There is a carwash on the corner at the stop. After you turn left onto 19th, go up the block to the first stop sign and hang a left on Avenue S. Go two blocks and the road dead ends, turn right onto 17th St. Slow down and watch for sand in the turn because it is a drainage gutter at the base of a hill. Go up the short hill past one home and Woodland Lane will be on your left. We are the second/last house on the right.

:tab Park in the street across from our house, that is the most level place. DO NOT BLOCK THE DRIVEWAY ACROSS THE STREET. You might not see it, but there is a house back in the woods and their driveway empties into the circular part of the culdesac.

Sorry I am going to miss you again scott: One of these days we will get together. Enjoy the sking - I am a snow boarder and have not been in two seasons - sure am missing it.

You are my idol. You get to ride every weekend!

Coming down on the FZ or the FX? Since my daughter is not going, I will be on the RST 1000.

[I like Warren's idea of not doing the mind numbing I-45 up to Scott's house.........
.......For most of the Houston riders,...... I was thinking of a central hook up site, ( N. East corner Belt-8 & 249) Head up 249 > 149> King's for breakfast, do the Forest ( Warm up) > 1791 > 30 > Scott's drive-way.......
.Need some input as to if my "reckoning" is on track......> Pull out gas station 7:15 > 249 > 149 > Kings breakfast 8:00AM....(gobble, sip, slurp, Aahhhh), finished breakfast 8:45 > Ride through portion of forest, head into Huntsville > 9:15................Kiss the baby, shake some hands, pat some backs, load up and head out to the "Big Thicket".......

DrBlackbird: I have not heard any more about the Houston crowd meeting to head up to kings and through the forrest to Scotts place - What is the plan?? It looks like a bunch of folks are going straight to the IHOP in Huntsville :scratch
Thanks

Probably the FZ, my rear tire is a little thin on the FX and the new pilot roads aren't even broken in well on the FZ.

Leon,........You bet,.... the place to be is N. East corner( 249 & Belt-8) kickstands up 7:15........Scott made a good point about King's not being a drive-thru fast food spot. However, the food is plentiful , good and priced right....... What we'll do is pull in and see what the crowd looks like, if any. Then ask the Mgr. to take care of us because we are with the famous TWT Pie eaters club, and we are on a mission........
.
Worst case scenario,.... we head on up to huntsville through the early morning Forest and meet up with the I-hoppers........From what I've read, kick-stands are going up @ 10 AM at Scotts house. This leaves us plenty of time to eat at either place and have a good breakfast. I'd like to not start the day by being blasted around on I-45 by all the Dallas bound 18 wheelers.
.
So far it looks like a good turn out for this ride Sat..........See Ya'll there.

I must apologize. I am having a pool built and they are scheduled to shoot the gunite tomorrow. Thus the ever increasing chance of rain.

You may be forgiven, for an invite to partake in boozing, food and swimming all at your place, after a long hot day of riding.

It is a small price to pay for forgiveness.

The wet weather isn't supposed to get over this far east until after the day is over, if at all. After 5pm the chances of rain start to go up, but only barely.

And even if it does, ITS ONLY WATER PEOPLE! Go slower and just be careful.
