Haven't been to any of these things. Living in Mx, I've gotta do my Texas associations/riding during abbreviated times. And that involves some conflicts, like wife's needs, Tex-Mex eating, relative visiting, tax paying, renewing licenses, etc.
Looking forward to this since I try to keep up by lurking here.

I've had motel reservations for about three weeks now. I guess that makes me a definite.
I am highly probable at this time. Most likely will tent camp at the state park Saturday night. Will probably break the ride there into a Friday/Saturday deal and camp somewhere along the way Friday night. Slab home on Sunday. Others from DFW thinking about similar plans????

I was thinking of riding down on Friday, finding a place close by, staying Friday and Saturday nights, coming home on Sunday.

I was looking at the 377/67 route thru San Angelo and Alpine. That looks like the way Rich (Simmons1) came back from Alpine last weekend.

That's my plan exactly - except that I made reservations at the Sunday House Inn in Alpine already and won't be doing the "finding a place close by" part.

I'm thinking that I will try to make this one if the weather holds out. Would most likely ride down Friday and camp Friday night and Sat night in Davis State Park and then head back early Sunday. Haven't explored any of the roads around Ft Davis nor have I seen the McDonald observatory and Ft Davis itself. That ought to be enough to keep me busy for a couple of days. The weather should be very nice for camping in late May and if the weather is clear the stars should put on quite a show  at night around that neck of the woods. Anyone else planning on camping in the State Park ? If so let me know.

Put me and Kathy for definite maybe. Since you have a 1100 start time looks like we will have to ride out Friday when I get off work. Stop somewhere along the way (maybe Brownwood or a bit further) and maybe camp. Then come on in Saturday. Camp at the state park, and try to do a Saturday evening Star Party at the observatory. We have never done a Star Party, seen the observatory before. If you have never seen the observatory before it is well worth the tour I highly recommend it. Then super slab it home Sunday. Maybe have time to grab a couple of geocaches in the area and take some pictures of the courthouses in Jeff Davis, Presido, & Brewster counties. Yes Chuck you have got us doing it now.

I was looking at the wrong day....I am off Thursday to Monday that week!!!! So we can take our time to get there and get back if you are so inclined.
I will be at Ice Cream next week....I am in Austin this weekend for the LE Memorial ride.....I think the Star Party would be a cool thing to do.
I am IN as Yogi says.
My plan is to leave Friday afternoon and stay along the way. Star party Saturday night sounds like a good deal, is one scheduled? I could not find the star party schedule on the observatory site.
I have the following week off work so I am using this as a jumping off point for a western states tour on the FJR. Not sure which states I will be visiting, but will be taking maps and going as I please. No advance reservations on this trip.
I am interested in riding along with other DFW folks on the way out, we can talk about it at one of the regular gatherings.
Coverage found. I'm IN. Now I just need to find a place for Friday and Saturday nights. Who's doing what?

I am thinking of going ... no guarantees.
If I go, I would want to leave Friday and return Sunday.
I would like to visit to other areas like Big Bend ... is there anyone thinking of doing additional group rides?
Anyone sharing rooms??
When I drove in west Texas, it seemed like gas stations were few and far between. I would have to do some investigation/searches.

This is what I found:
Evening Star Party
Enjoy a tour of the constellations and view the moon, planets, stars, galaxies, and other objects through large telescopes at our Visitors Center Public Observatory. The program is fun for the entire family, and is open to everyone. In the event of rain, significant clouds, or high winds/dust/humidity, a series of unique indoor presentations will stimulate your interest and curiosity; refunds due to inclement weather are not available. The StarDate Café and Gift Shop open one hour before the Star Party.
RESERVATIONS ARE NEITHER REQUIRED NOR ACCEPTED FOR STAR PARTIES.
Star Party Pass Adult Child (6-12) Family (5+)
Every Tuesday/Friday/Saturday
Mar 9-Apr 30: 9:00 P.M.
May 1-Aug 31: 9:30 P.M.
Sep 1-Nov 3: 8:30 P.M.
Nov 4-Mar 8: 7:30 P.M.
Times valid for 2008 ONLY
$10 $8 $40
Spend the day with us and get both passes for a reduced rate:
Daytime Pass
+
Star Party Pass Adult Child (6-12) Family (5+)
Combine both and save! $15 $12 $60
DRESS WARMLY!!! Temperatures vary quite a bit at our elevation (6,300-6,800 feet above sea level) and are usually much cooler than other areas of Texas. The mountain air can cool as much as 20 degrees after sunset and most of the Star Party program takes place outside under the stars. For summer make sure you bring at least a light jacket and long pants. For Fall, Winter, and early Spring programs, layer your attire and bring a warm coat, thermals, gloves, and something to keep your head warm.
When should I visit for a Star Party?
Although there is no single best answer to this question, one of the more important things to keep in mind is the phase of the Moon. With the Moon at any phase between several days before First Quarter and 3 or 4 days past Full, bright moonlight limits our ability to observe faint objects but, of course, gives us great views of the Moon itself.
At the U.S Naval Observatory data service site, you can find lists of dates of the four major moon phases to help you make your plans.
Twilight Program
Our Twilight Program is an engaging, 60-70 minute learning experience which takes place on Star Party nights only, one and a half hours before the Star Party begins. This program is separate from and does not include the Star Party, although you may do both if you wish...most people do.
In our current Modelling the Solar System Twilight Program, you will learn about objects close to home in our own Solar System. We'll use special software in our multimedia theater to illustrate the motion and location of the planets, then we'll construct a (mostly) scale model of the Solar System in our outdoor amphitheater using the program participants as the planets themselves.
This program is great for all ages. Dress warmly...some of this program takes place outdoors.
Ticket prices for the Twilight Program vary with program content; tickets for our current Modelling the Solar System program are $5.00 in addition to Star Party.
Twilight Program Adult Child (6-12)
Every Tuesday/Friday/Saturday
Mar 9-Apr 30: 7:30 P.M.
May 1-Aug 31: 8:00 P.M.
Sep 1-Nov 3: 7:00 P.M.
Nov 4-Mar 8: 6:00 P.M.
Times valid for 2008 ONLY
$
From what I can see....one of us will have to be there right when it opens (10am) to get tickets for the Star Party that evening...does anyone how far from Pie Run location is from the observatory?
OK, I guess I'll just book something and hope it is close. :lol2:

I don't know when you last stay at the Antelope Lodge, but we stayed there in '06. We thought the place was a dump. The A/c's barely worked, they weren't all that clean, and in one the cable for the TV was strung on the floor across the doorway going into the kitchette. We had to hunt up stuff in the back room of the office to find coffee pot & cups. The office wasn't open any morning before 9. The whole was in bad need of renovation. It was not a good experience, we won't stay there again.

We stayed there last week. It was very clean. Coffee pot & cups in the room. Plenty of clean towels & hot water. Yes, if you wanted to cook, you had to get the kitchen supplies (free of charge) from a supply room behind the office, next to the ice machine. They do open after 9am and the office closes at 9pm. For late arrival they leave your key in the office door. Granted no Ramada Inn (thats down the road a few more miles) but not a Ramada rate either. To each their own. I like it and will stay there again.

Wow! The rooms we had didn't look anything like that. The cabins they put us in where a lot smaller. With 4 adults 2 beds that were somewhere between a twin and a full. My wife and are not very big pepople and we had to turn over in unison. If you wanted to sit on the john in the bath you almost had to back into bathroom it was so small. The kitchette was the same way walk straight in back out. Both of the room we had looked like they had last been repainted back in 50's. There was 8 of us staying in 2 rooms for 2 nights. We thought it looked really neat on the internet, but it was something else. We won't stay there again!

Unbelievable after all the dreaming and planning, I was even thinking of taking my youngest son.
I was just told that WE have to attend our ex-neighbor's daughter graduation that weekend. Our kids and their kids grew up together and we still interchange our kids for visits.
So I will have to downgrade from probable to doubtful.

For people still looking for a place to stay you might consider Balmorhea State Park. We just returned from a week-long visit to their "historic" motor-hotel. Lodging is just decent but you can get a room with a galley-kitchen. The two best parts though are the HUGE spring-fed pool and the road to Fort Davis is a spectacular ride.

That is weird. I swear I read the entire thread trying to make sure I was not being redundant. I'll read more carefully next time!
I came back here to add the story of my bogus traffic stop from last week on the very road from Balmorhea to Fort Davis. My wife, son, and my parents were all piled into my Xterra returning from the Star Party at the McDonald Observatory. Driving in the dark and knowing there are tons of suicidal animal life in the area I was driving 10 mph under the limit and being super-attentive to the road. I suddenly found myself being pulled over by the DPS. For once I knew I was not speeding and wasn't the slightest bit nervous about the stop. I was told I was being pulled over because I "swung wide over the shoulder" on a l o n g straight-away. The officer made a big deal about not giving me a ticket "this time". I sure would like to know what offense I had committed even IF I had gone over the line. Anway, after we pulled away, before I could even express my opinion, everyone else in the car was exclaiming what a crock that stop was and that I had never strayed from the straight and narrow down the center of the lane.
I've read on here before about people being pulled over in West Texas for bogus reasons. Be advised, it is still happening!

Our reservations for a campsite at San Angelo SP on Friday and at Davis Mtns SP for Sat are made. We are also going to a Star Party at the observatory Sat nite. You do not have to have reservation for that, they take everybody who shows up. The Twlight party starts at 8 PM and the Star party at 9:30, last 2 hours.

This is what I found:
Evening Star Party
...
From what I can see....one of us will have to be there right when it opens (10am) to get tickets for the Star Party that evening...does anyone how far from Pie Run location is from the observatory?
It's about 10 miles from the State Park. However, you don't have to run up there in the morning. You can get the tickets when you so up for the Star Party. They never "sell out" a Star Party, however, they can be upwards of 1,000 people there during spring breaks. A typical May/June one will have about 200 people each night.
Cheers,
Mike

A word of caution from another friend who rode out there recently - on the loop that goes through the Davis Mountains - DPS troopers are everywhere. It's part of some "border security" thing. He also noted many troopers on the roads south of Alpine and Ft. Davis were present in large numbers. They were in white pickups with no lights on top - so they blend in well and are hard to distinguish.
They are eager to pull over anyone for the slightest violation. If you do get pulled over, mention that you are a TWT user and see if they just write you only a warning.

180 past Weatherford is still a 70 MPH speed limit with nothing to look at except going through the small towns. Although, your chance of getting blown of the road by a semi is probably a lot lower on 180.

Well, I'm going to miss another one. My bike will be in the shop most of that day getting it's 12K scheduled maintenance before I head for Colorado on the 13th.
For those that go, the ride from about 5 miles north of McDonald observatory south into Ft. Davis is a favorite, and the Ft. Davis loop is interesting for the wind turbine farms on the mesas.
Be careful of deer in south Texas; one of my riding buddies from Tyler just got back and on the way down there had a deer attempt to jump over him as he was riding by on his bike. Scarred up his helmet where the deer's hoofs hit it:

It's a whole different deal down there.
10 years ago I was all over that area and there were no speed limits, everyone just drove 90+.
That's no longer a good idea.
Also back then I drove 1021 south from Eagle Pass and east to Carrizo Springs on 2644. Saw no LEO.
Last week I made the same trip and was amazed at the number of Border Patrol vehicles I was paying for. Easily 3 dozen on that road alone.

Thanks, Rich. I think the hotrods will be busting down the interstate since it is so close to 180.

OK - I guess I had better get hopping on a route (I've been working on my bike all day). I had tentatively planned to taking I20 from SW Arlington and putter down 377 to Stephenville and pick up 67 there.

We were planning on leaving Wills Point in time to meet up with a friend in Mesquite at around 0600. The plan was to take 20 to 67 and 67 all the way into Alpine. But since I'm the one leading the pack (if you can call three riders a pack), I have the prerogative to alter either the schedule or the route. So if you don't mind us inviting ourselves, and if you’re law-abiding, follow-the-speed-limit type guys, we would love to meet you and ride down together. Just tell me when and where and I'll force the other two to bend to my will.

I'm getting packed as well. I still need to do my bike checks but wasn't going to do it this afternoon. I'm doing my inside packing during the heat.
I'm packed and ready to roll. The bike has been checked, the GPS loaded and I'm ready for 0600.

I'm in!
Leaving at what ever time I can sneak out of work early tomorrow. Will ride the boring route out (I20) until the deer come out and then finish up Saturday morning.
Will be leaving after Pie to head back to Fort Worth via a more scenic route.

Looks like a Koffee Kup breakfast in the morning.

Wow, it's awesome that so many of y'all are making a mini-vacation out of this. Kinda like the Corpus run a couple of months ago. Maybe these "far" locations will work out after all! :rider:
Yeah, but I'm ready for some closer ones. No more crying from El Paso and West Texas.

Okay, bike checks out and my saddlebags are packed. I've got my clothes for tomorrow, tank bag and riding gear laid out by the door. All that's left is to wake up, fill up my camelback, and head out to meet Kurt at Jim's for some breakfast.
I managed to find a sheepskin for the saddle as well as a tinted visor for my Nolan. Oh, and some Sidi boots that fit really well and had to go home with me as well...
I'm psyched and ready to hit the road.
Funny, just went through the list of definites looking to see who I will get to meet from west Texas, had trouble finding anyone from west of Abilene.
Where are the El Paso or Midland Odessa folks that wanted a west run?
Oh well, I will enjoy the ride, the sights, the company, and the pie. Usually we honor the farthest rider... this time I say we honor the nearest. What do you think? Sound like a plan?

OK OK I'll start :tears: for South Texas. Wait a minute, :wary: you had one when I was stuck in New Mexico.:thpt:
Going to pack the bike now. I'll see you in Fort Davis in about 12 hours???
Scott, If you have any extra caps......I need two black ones. I lose mine on the West Coast trip someplace between Texas and New Mexico.

Hey! I just noticed I was on the "maybe" list. I'm not sure how I got there. Maybe just because I posted up a lodging recommendation? Anyway, it pains me much, but I am not going to make it. I would have loved to ride out there with Josh and Kurt... if I could keep up. :-)

I was suppose to be on a trip to Nevada but I ran over something and had to plug the tire and have it replaced in El Paso. My time schedule to make it to Nevada was screwed after the tire change so I decided to instead to head to Fort Davis and eat pie on Saturday. I was not in the best of moods today so I left for the house this afternoon . Have fun.

Just reading this. Might head out in the morning. But, just rode my rear off during the holiday weekend (3 days ago). Checking the map to see if the roads out there are straight or "fun". Not sure what a pie run is, though!
PS>I was thinking there was a thread of El Paso riders listed on this site, for fut ref.

It was fun!
We endured attacking rattle snakes, bloated wild pigs, strange wandering deer, hot and spicy south Texas temperatures of 100+ degrees....and great views of the wild west mountains.
Till next time :)
