I bought a brand-new 2008 Suzuki V-Strom 650 in February 2008 and just recently did a couple multi-day trips, putting about 4,500 miles on the bike over the course of two+ weeks. And I am beginning to believe that this is one of the best all-around bikes I have ever ridden.
I've added a taller GIVI windscreen and GIVI 36 liter side bags and a 45 liter top case.
All of this after having put 93,000 miles on my 1998 Honda ST1100 (which I still have and plan to keep).
The V-Strom has good power, good ergonomics, fuel efficiency, carry capacity, ease of maintenance, light weight. I'm really pleased with it so far.
My only problem seems to be wind noise. And I have noticed that a lot of the noise comes from wind coming around the tank, striking my thighs, and coming vertically right up my chest and hitting the bottom of my helmet. I've started wearing ear plugs which I never felt a need to do with the ST. I'll still work on this issue.
This bike is a blast to ride. I know The Collective is out there. I guess I am now ready to be assimilated. Promise me it won't hurt.
