I've heard very good things about these maps. For a third party to have routable maps that download to a Garmin is quite a feat.
If I go, I'll be buying these.

The bicimap (links provided by Rusty) is what I recommend. I've been using it on my Zumo for 2 years now. It is a good map set and has certainly come in handy every time I've used it. They added the autorouting feature last year - which I really, really like.

I updated to the 2008 version today. I played with it a little bit today and it looks to be a nice update. It now allows the user the option of seeing all the dirt roads and trails with or without seeing all the contour lines - a feature I really like. The other big change is that it now shows details about routing through towns ( previous versions didn't show the roads running through towns, so you were on your own in terms of routing through a town).

Pinklloyd is in. Registered and riding from Brownsville. KLR temporary import papers and immigration docs in hand. Got that all done last Friday since this bike has never been south of the border cities before and I wanted to be ready early. I am taking minimal camping gear, tent and sleeping bag. I have been to the top of Cerro Potosi once only and it was covered in snow (january 2000). Looking forward to meeting all of you.

Welcome, Delores.
Bobcat (Claire) is the only other female registered as of today.
I'm out... Not real happy about the bikes I have to choose from. Sherpa is too small of an engine, with not enough luggage capacity, the Wee is too big and unwieldy for me to enjoy the rough roads. I'll think about it again next year, maybe I'll have a DRZ400 by then. I probably said those same exact words last year....
Richard_
09-15-2008, 07:28 PM
Bobcat,
Remember those roads we did together at TAR in 2007? The great ones east of Junction that had you laughing maniacally? Well, there is an abundance of roads just like that all around Galeana.
Your Wee is a perfect choice for those roads! If you don't have your heart set on riding class 3 roads on a DRZ400 or some such similar bike, then your Wee will be right at home at MexTrek. Promise.
On the other hand, if you do have your heart set on riding those really rough roads, trailer your Sherpa to Galeana and you will be set. No serious luggage carrying capacity needed if you are trailering to Galeana. You only need enough carrying capacity for day rides out of Galeana.
Anybody coming through Austin have a spot on a trailer that Bobcat can grab?

Hello,
I'm shooting to leave on the 22nd around 4:45am from Pflugerville, TX. 78660 (N.Austin.) HEB located at Wells Branch Pkwy and IH35.
Anyone who wants to meet there and ride out together can meet me there. It's up to you what route you would like to take, we can ride together part of the way or the whole way, no strings attached.
I have 3 ways to get down to Galeana 1-Laredo 2-Reynosa or my favorite 3, the los Indios bridge in Harlingen which I travel through four to five times every year. I haven't yet decided which way I'm taking, the 3rd is longer but safer, and with less traffic. 1 and 2 are the quickest but they have much more traffic.
I have my vehicle permit done already, so I will not stop at the Mexico border for the permit.
But I might help if necessary to facilitate those who do need to stop to acquire the permit.
Also, I haven't made my hotel reservations yet, I'm fixing to do that soon, thou.
Also for those who did made reservations already and not longer are going, please cancel it so those of us that are going will have a chance to find
rooms.
Thank you and have safe ride!
I feel dumb. I just realized the trip is next week and not this week. It looks like I may be available next week so I am back on the list.:rider:

I understand from another thread that the group has already promised the management full occupancy. There is also another hotel available. I don't think reservations are necessary at this time and I do understand that cancellations are definitely not a good idea since it may cause great confusion at that front desk. Check with Richard and also those other threads. I have always used Los Indios for my crosssing into Mexico, especially heading to Cd. Victoria. The southern loop around Reynosa during busy hours can be a literal ****. I am going to meet some of the group early Wednesday at the Motel 6 and cross at the McAllen bridge. I think at that hour heading south through Reynosa to the Autopista or the free highway will be with very low congestion. Looking forward to meeting you.

I am typing this from Guadalajara, Jalisco Mx.
Yes, definitely do not come to Mexico. It is very dangerous here. You will be shot, raped, kidnapped, robbed and lost.
Or so I thought too before my first trip here. Your feelings are normal, but will evaporate.
There are lots of State Department guys drinking in the bars laughing at the warnings they have issued to keep other Americans away from Mexico. They want the space here for themselves.
I have been attacked by fine scenery, lovely people, great twisty roads, excellent hotels, superb food, and have made a million new friends, again.
On another note, a few days ago I was in Galeana and it is a very beautiful place. The roads around there will blow your mind.
But I will not be running through there again on this push. After Puerto Vallarta this weekend, I am blasting farther south. Where I am going I do not know, or care.
I am on the 1200GSA, which with the Ohlins is just a rocket ship in Mexico. We are seeing some incredible stuff, and going places few people see.
Two days before I left for Mexico, I bought a 2009 KLR 650 and THAT is the bike I will cruise around Galeana on. But I need to get with Rich and Rick and farkle the thing before I go.
I road the train from Guadalajara to Amatitian today, and toured the Herradura factory. Guadalajara is the birthplace of the Mariachi, and they are all over the place down here.
I met a guy who owns a hotel in San Cristobal de las Casas, I stay cheap there when I run through to Mahahual in Feb 2009.
Bottom Line if you are nervous about paper work or traveling in Mexico, that is normal. After 20 minutes you realize that you are better off here than in the U.S.
Mexico is the promised land. I love it here.
I will be back in Galeana and rip the roads in the back country with you all soon enough, but on the KLR.
Tricepilot´s Taxi Trick...
Put this in your bag of tricks...Get yourselves a folding map of Mexico. That and 100 pesos (less than ten bucks) plus a taxi driver means easy Mexico. Let´s say you are in Monterrey and nervous about finding your way to Reyones. Pull over, find the taxi guy, and point to Reyones on the map and give him the dinero. Tell him however you can that you will follow him. Use sign language if you don´t know spanish. You´ll be on your way following the taxi and blast on.
Saludos y que le vaya bien.

Across the crick
Border formalities. I’m filled with a mixture of fatigue and trepidation. No matter that I’ve done this 500 times before, entering foreign territory in the dark always increases my anxiety level a tad. Watch your money, watch your stuff, get all your stamps, be suspicious of good Samaritans. A Mexican traveler is wowed that we are on our bikes and headed for Puerto Vallarta. "You will have a wonderful time." Then Mexico. Reynosa, as always, totally totally confusing.... At 26 kilometers is the final immigration check. We pass a long line of trucks, move up to the front to the lights, more officials in uniforms, keep your eyes straight ahead.... We are officially in the interior.
It reminds me of the time I went skydiving. All that anxiety as the plane climbs to 10,000 feet, and then that door, oh, the horror of the door, and next thing you know you don't have to worry about the door any more, and you are in free fall. In the interior we are in free fall. Enjoy the ride. Let the adventure begin.

How did the advance paperwork go when you got to the border?
How are you getting the KLR650 down there since your rod the 1200 GSA down there from San Antonio? I take it some is trucking it down there for you, so how does that change the permitting process?

Mike,
The permit for the vehicle in advance from Banjercito was flawless. You still need to get a visa, but that line is miniscule in comparison. I will always do online permits in the future.
As to your other question, I am not returning to Galeanan on this trip, heading farther south.
HINT I would not affix the moto permit to the bike again. Just keep it and its document safe in the pannier. You dont need it on the bike just be able to produce it if asked. If it gets lost or taken then you have a headache.
BTW I have taken over 700 photos but yall have to wait until I come home whenever that is. I dont do ride reports on the road I am to busy taking it all in.

Richard, looking at the mextrek guide "top of the world" cerro Del Potosi.
I went to El Potosi some time in late 80's.
I rode a still old back then, yamaha TT 500, it was a piece a cake, **** with cream too!
There was or still is a Tecnologico de Monterrey Observatory up there if I remember correctly.
We found 1 ton dually going up to the top of the hill at the time. We found out later after meeting them at the top of el cerro, that this truck was taking students from the University up to the observatory, it was part of some sort class they were taking, we got invite to stay in if we wanted to spend the night.
At that time the dirt road up to El Potosi was in pretty good shape, BTW this was on a HOT July and there was ICE on the ground in some spots at the very top where the observatory is or was located.
In any case does any one been there lately and know the condition of the road? I hope they haven't improve the road too much, I have a much heavier bike now, hoping not to get too carry away.
Richard, this package that I got from you "MexTrek ride guide" is pretty much all anyone will need, you cover all the basis here in this booklet, especially the topo maps are great!, job well done!
Lately I been dumb down by this freaking GPS, can't leave home without it, I have not look at a map for years.
Do put me down in your list, I'm hoping to find place to sleep, other wise I' ll be sleeping in the plaza con mis compadres los borrachos y una botella de mezcal para aguantar el frio..
BTW there is this little pueblito call San Carlos were you can buy the best mezcal in Tamaulipas, I always stop there before heading back home, from Mexico.

Pues, que bueno, así no seré yo el único perezoso del grupo que vaya a poner el mal ejemplo.

Senor,
I look forward to your ride report. The last one with your trusty HD deep in the land of Mexico was superb. One of the best travel diaries I have read. Lots of earthy characters...
Jack Kerouac influence?
Best,
RB

I'll be in Galeana even if it means taking the bus. God willing, I'll be on the beat '93 KLX.
I love Kerouac.
