Sweeper, we'll most likely be hitting Walnut Springs at about 0730. We shouldn't have a hard time finding you. I dare say yours will be the only Hayabusa in Walnut Springs at that time of the morning. Anyone else who wants to meet up, we'll form up on the south side of the square in Glenrose, by the courthouse, at 0715. Looking forward to a great ride down. Jury's still out on whether or not I'll tempt the rain gods by washing the mud from Pie Run II off of my bike before then. :-)

I did a pre PIE II run using Kelly’s (FWVic) route the week before the ride. On my pre ride I only got as far as Copperas Cove. Got side tracked on my way down a couple of times with some dirt road exploring and ran out of daylight. This is an excellent ride. It’s definitely a keeper. Great job Kelly
I will be with you in spirit for PIE III. I had some surgery on my right foot, ( not bike related accident ) so TWTEX will have to be my virtual bike riding for a few months. :-(

That settles it, I'm definitely not washing my bike before this weekend. Can't anyway, since it's currently in the Victory Arlington service department awaiting some parts that their double left-handed mechanic broke while trying to change my tires. Yes, yes, I know, that's what I get for not doing it myself.
But one way or another, I'm making it to Marble Falls this weekend. Wasabi, I'm glad you liked the route. I did what I always do, loaded up Streets and Trips and connected all of the squiggly lines between here and there. But proof positive that demented minds think alike came when Sweeper said that he'd already ridden that exact route before. :-) I hope your foot heals up quickly. Tell me I'm not the only one around here who read your post and immediately thought, "Oh, thank goodness it's not his shifting foot!" Allison's still laughing about your GPS. Hurry up and heal, she said that she simply has to see it in person.
As for the rain, we'll see. I remember when Harold Taft was forecasting the weather for NBC up here in DFW. I read a quote from him once in which he stated that he hated giving five day forecasts. He claimed that anyone who claimed that they could forecast the weather five days in advance in North Texas was an out and out liar. After all, according to the forecast from five days ago, it's supposed to be raining here in Fort Worth right now. Waitaminute, was that thunder I just heard?
Viva la pie!

Lots of Harleys/Goldwings doing poker runs. Ate at Andys BBQ in Gatesville-all you can eat buffet for 5.50, not bad Q. Anyway, lets hope for good weather. Kelly, what time did you get back in town from PIE II ? Anybody thinking of an overniter in Marble Falls/Austin. I personally would prefer meeting up north and taking 1431 to Marble Falls. We could even take it back too. I might be pressed for time afterwards which is why I'd like to make sure I get some good riding in on the trip up there incase I need to take the quick way back.

I've been holding off on commiting to make this, but the only barrier left is the weather and it's supposed to be wetter later in the day rather than early. My wife and son are off to Orlando for him to swim at the Junior Nationals and my mom is taking my daughter shopping on saturday, so I'm free.
So, count me in. I'll be at the Taco Cabana at 10am, ready to go.
I'll probably be taking the direct route back because I think my daughter has some sort of practice later in the afternoon.

Well, last weekend I went north up Cow Creek, then headed towards Liberty Hill on 1174? then onto 1869. Nothing special there, but then I got off on some county roads, 285,284,283 and worked my way over to Round Mountain road and finally back to Nameless road. That sort of thing would be my indirect way home. On Nameless I can head either way to get back.

If anyone on the north side of town is going, I'm going to just head west from the Woodlands... 1488 to 290 to 183 to 1431 to 281 to pie. Hopefully I can meet up with the Austin group and ride the last bit with them.
How long should that take me so I can plan a start time?
And like pdef said, where is the TC if in fact that's where the Austin group is meeting up?
I'd like some company if anyone up this way is going. I've only got 1200 miles under my belt in the last 10 days so I won't be a speed demon through the turns and I'll probably need to rest my butt every 100 miles or so.

The Taco Cabana is on the west side 183 at Walton Way, just north of 1431 (Whitestone Blvd.) in Cedar Park. If you are coming from the south, turn left at the light at Walton Way. It sits in front of a Wal-Mart. There is a McDonalds close to the corner of 183 & 1431, the TC is just north of the McD's.

I went to work on 71 today to check out better meeting locations. I think the Diamond Shamrock station north of the "Y" on 71 (east side of 71) would be a better location, that way everyone can gas-up or go to the restroom before we leave. Since they are planning on leaving the Taco Cabana in Cedar Park at 10:00 AM, then maybe we should leave the Oak Hill area about 8:30 AM, that way we can have some time to chat and take care of business in Cedar Park before we leave for Marble Falls. I will be at the station around 8:00 AM.

OK, I'm in! Latest reports put the high chance of precip later on in the day so atleast the ride out to MF looks pretty good.
I'd like to make a few route change suggestions for the Houston area riders. I think the west side folks should meet out in Brookshire at I-10 and FM 359. There is a Jack in the Box on the SW corner that has a gas station right next door. Everyone meets and tops off in Brookshire and there should be no need for anyone to have to gas up in Industry. Bastrop or Austin would be the next fuel stop.
Leaving out of Brookshire we can head up FM359 to FM 1459 and on to Fayettville via 36, 949 and 1094.
If this sounds good to everyone, I (or Scratch ;-) ) can come up with a good route from Fayetteville to Austin and times for the meeting points.

Easy ride for you. Hope to see you there.
Two questions for the rest of you all.
1. Is anybody keeping track of how many are expected? If so, what's the count?
2. Has anybody contacted the Bluebonnet yet to warn them? I know they have plently of parking, but 20-30 (my guess) showing up at once might through them a little.

This sounds like a decent plan, I'm just wondering how it will play out for a start time, considering we need to meet the Austin group at Taco Cabana at 10. How early would we have to leave? Will the sun be out?
Kickstands up at 7:30 in Brookshire should be O.K I would think.

I plan on being there.
Looks like I will be the lone contingent from San Antonio.
I plan to just shoot up 281 north....yawn...

Ok, if you are coming from Houston and want to ride along to Austin, this is earlier than last time. I think meeting at Starbucks is just plain silly now, so let's go for the far west meeting point like Thermalser has indicated.

Sounds like a good plan, Thermalser.
Low and DrBlackbird - you guys just want to meet up with everyone in Brookshire? If I don't hear from you I'll give you guys a ring.

I'm going to try and leave early enough to get to the TC by 10am, and ride over. I have to slab it home and get home as early as possible from down there so I won't be able to hang around too long, but long enough to accomplish the two part mission..Pie, and see the work of art formerly known as my Arai Quantum.

FWVic and I were going to meet anyone interested at the square in Glen Rose. At present, no plans for that have been set. So we'll meet you at the same Shell station in Granbury around 7:00. If it's raining, we won't be making the ride. We got some shoppin' to do for more gear first!! Any which way, if we're not there by 7:15, go ahead and go without us.

Thanks Alyson. I would have thought you guys had the rain gear on a high priority after the last one. Just kidding. I got a feeling tomorrow is gonna be a repeat of the last one. I think I'm gonna make it just for the heck of it anyway. I've always said that two wheels in the rain is better than a sunny one in the cage so can't let a little rain stop me. ;)

Got up, lightning popping, thunder booming, cold and pouring rain outside. A bit too hardcore for me this time, I'm gonna stay here and wrench the bikes all day.
Looks like you austinites and houstonites might miss the rough stuff though.

I think I'll wimp out on this one, the squall line movement (http://www.weather.com/weather/map/USTX0829?name=index_large_animated&day=1) does not look encouraging.

Alarm went off this morning. Rolled over and slapped it off. Lay awake for three seconds listening to the sounds of thunder and a deluge pouring down outside. Rolled over and went back to sleep. Sorry, guys and gals, I've gotten my cold, wet rain riding merit badge for the year. Sweeper, have fun punching holes through the showers on that missile-bike of yours. :-D Safe riding to those who made it today.

P.S. As God as my witness, I swear I didn't wash my bike this time. :-)
I went to Taco Cabana to meet everyone, but ended up getting called into work. :angryfir: The Houston group called (about 10:00) to say they were an hour behind and would just meet everyone at Marble Falls. I came back home to change and go to work.
Rebecca just called me a few minutes ago to say the Houston group would not make it at all. They have had two crashes since leaving Houston. No one is seriously injured, but apparently one of the bikes is pretty meesed up. The other incident involved a quick stop and one rider hitting another. Again no one hurt badly. No word on who any of the riders were.

I just got home. About 20 miles out from Marble Falls, a light drizzle started and four of us decided to return (Los Tres Brothers and Robert). We were uncomfortable with the slickness that such precipitation brings and it was getting so dark that my headlight was able to illuminate the road signs.
I'm hearing thunder at the moment and the local radar is showing a good size cell on its way.
*&%^%##!! weather :headbang: I was really looking forward to meeting everybody.
Sorry to hear about the crashes - I hope everyone will be OK.

just got back to Leander. I have a new weather term: 'Pie Run Weather' which means get the farm animals inside.
Things were tolerable until 6 miles from marble falls at which point we were drenched by a torrential downpour. Even my trophy mega-fairing crapped out and let the water flow.
We had about 12 at the cafe I think. Met some cool people. Lee's custom Sportster was pretty sweet. Hardcore riding in the hailstorm with a skullcap helmet too! Phillip's Tuono was verrry cool. Hadn't seen one of those before. Buddy's ZRX1100 - well of course I can attest to the greatness of that bike having owned a 99 model myself.
The crazy dual-sport guys went down cow creek road or some other landslide zone on the way back. I'm sure they'll make it. ;-)
Got your message squeaky and relayed to those at the cafe. Hope everyone who crashed is ok (personal injury-wise at least). Sounds like there were no serious injuries.

Blah, sorry for wussing out on you folks. Things were looking ok until halfway to MF on 1431 when it was wet enough to soak the roads. Sorry, I'm just not a wet weather rider and that was enough for me. It was dry and fairly decent back into town. When I got home I checked the weather channel radar and a red cell line passed right over MF so I guess we turned around at the right time.
Hope you folks that continued on made it ok, and sorry to hear about the Houston folks.

My wife and I got home to Buda about 40 minutes ago. Around Hamilton Pool it started to rain cats and dogs again (or is it dogs and cats?). At times the rain was so bad that I could only guess what's in front of me. My biggest problem was that all my limbs where wet and cold. Reminded me of my first ride long ride with my wife over the Alps in April; same weather only colder and 500 miles instead of 100. ;-)
We saw a group of motorcycle riders who had stopped on 150 between Dripping Springs and Driftwoood; one of them had apparently crashed. Police and EMS were there too.
It was worth coming out, although I was not convinced by the the Blue Bonnet Cafe: there were just too many guests.
I hope everybody else made it home safely!

I made it back home about 2:20, I came back via 281 to 71. About Spicewood it started into a heavy downpour all the way home. I put the FroggToggs on this time and atleast it helped from air conditioning my legs with my wet pants (since I did not put them on before we left TC). My Firstgear Granite jacket did its job, the only wet part on my shirt was the cuffs from the water running down my arms into the gloves. Everything is hanging up to drip dry now.
As I was getting ready to leave, DutchInterceptor and his wife arrived from Tyler. I talked to them for abit while they were waiting on some other friends to show. It was nice to meet them and talk to them, hopefully they can make some more runs with better weather.
Maybe we should not return to the Bluebonnet until we are suffering from drought season in July or August
Squeaky, thanks for making the calls. Glad to hear the riders are safe and sorry to hear about the 05 being totalled. Rough day for the Houston gang.
Re: turning back, I'm glad that was the deal. When I looked back and saw missing headlamps in my mirror I was concerned. You did miss a good drenching so if your not happy to ride wet roads, turning back was a good choice.
The rain pelts stung through my leather jacket but we missed the hail. Then I saw this rig, and he did ride through the hail. That aint a full face hanging from those bars.

I just made it back in, the ride up was interesting. havent ridden in hail in a while. Introduced the Pie Run to a friend of mine who rode one of his customs, he did not seem to like the hail at all must have been the half helmet, we ate met some of the folks and left he went back 71 to Austin I went back 1431 to Lime Creek around 620 out through Driftwood and back through Wimberly and back to New Braunfels. I think I have the Honor of being the only one present at all 3 pie runs so far I think I may rename myself Aqualung :-D . Rebecca I hope all is well with your group.
I made it home. I stopped in Austin and traded the tuono in on a jetski and life jacket. Nice to see everyone again. My prediction for Pie Run IV... locusts.

Sorry, I should've made our plan to turn around if it rained known to the entire group at TC. When the road is wet my confidence level drops and riding just isn't fun for me at that point. I didn't have any rain gear on eaither so I really would've ben soaked.
The 4 of us did stop to eat at Rudy's BBQ on 183 back in Austin though so getting out to ride today wasn't a total loss. Mmmmm... BBQ... :-D

Sorry to have wussed out also. Had no rain gear and hit wet blackness and hail squall about 12 miles southwest of MF, so I turned tail and out ran it, but got cold and wet anyway. Hope all is repairable with Houston crowd...plastic and alloy are easier to replace than skin and bone, so am glad nobody got hurt. Here's to a better next time.

I got home about 30 min ago; 415 miles on the clock for my FIRST real ride, and boy, was it a ride! Today was the two week aniversary of me getting to ride again after 25+ years and I made the most of it...
I got to experience hills, twisties, cold, WIND, and lots and lots and lots of rain. :-)
As others have already mentioned, we hit a deluge a few miles from the cafe and visibility was practically nil but we soldiered on in the honor of our missing Rebecca.
When we left MF I followed Larry back into town to the TC where I took care of a little business inside and then got into my Froggs Toggs (just in case). We had hit some sporadic rain on the way back into town and although parts of the sky were clearing, other parts were just as dark as could be and I wasn't sure which way it was moving so I suited up just in case.
I'm so glad I did. Just as soon as I left the TC and headed S on 183 it started coming down in buckets again. I think I rode in a downpour all the way to Elgin, and then I had to contend with HIGH crosswinds the rest of the way home.
Kickstand up at 5:55 this morning and rolled back into the garage at 5:45pm. Boy, am I ever sore!
I'm going to post a wet weather gear report in the Hardware section later as I had a chance to use a LOT of it today.

Everyone is fine, just bumps and bruises. Can't say the same for the bikes.
Nathan (Low) laid his ZX12R down in the grass avoiding bicycles trucks in the road. He narrowly avoids taking Stuart (Thermalser) down with him, but clips his bike as he goes down. Nathan is sore and has a few scrapes, rashed his new jacket (but it did exactly what he bought it for) and broke his watch. We were back on the road within 30 minutes.
Later on, in/near Webberville(?), Shawn (sqvvcd?) went down in a corner on his new '05 R1(or R6?), left the road and hit the grass, got separated from the bike and slid on gravel, and his bike flipped (nobody saw it but it had to be a number of times) and landed with wheels in the air and a debris field at least 25 ft. long. He is visibly shaken, but is without major injury. Bumps and scrapes, but his gear took the damage and spared greater injury.
After getting everything worked out, the bike moved to the nearest store and a truck on its way from Houston, we decide that we are now looking at a 12:30-1:00 arrival in Marble Falls if we get right back on the road and push on. They are closing at 2:00 because of Easter weekend. The meet was set for 11, and there are grey clouds in that direction.
Back to Bastrop for lunch, then rode back without further incident. Not a single drop of rain... Mother nature apparently won the war against Murphy's Law.
Full write-up to come later. There's plenty of story to be told. One thing is worth nothing, though: it's good to have a doctor along for the ride when you have a day like this.

Glad to hear folks survived. Wearing gear is a good thing. It is far easier to fix a bike than a rider.
Nathan, sorry to hear about your beautiful zixxer. Glad to hear you weren't injured.
Shawn, your wreck sounds like mine a year ago. I was pretty shaken up and it took almost 3 months to get back on a bike. Heal up and get back on 2 wheels when your ready.
Jeff, I just saw your sig. Where is your story? Is it on here and I missed it?
Yup, woke up, thunder and lightning, pouring rain. I'll get caught out along the way but I won't leave the house if it's already coming down like that. Besides, my rubber ain't too hot at moving standing water at the moment, I'm in the last 500 miles or less before new tars.
We will have to see an end to the Pie Run Curse sometime soon !
