OK, we'll try nametags again!

NOTE: If your name has a nametag icon http://www.twtex.com/photopost/data/500/thumbs/nametag_me.gif beside it, then you have made a stick-on nametag made. If not, I am waiting until the last minute for you to supply an avatar picture or a "called/given" name to go with your screen name. The nametag will have your avatar, screen-name, and "real world" name, assuming I can find all that information.

If your name is not in one of the lists, then you have not clearly said what your intentions are or I haven't gotten to it yet.
If it is still not on the list when a "list updated" post appears after it, I have erred  and let me know about it!

There will be a supply of blank nametags at the restaurant.

If the nametag icon is greenhttp://www.twtex.com/photopost/data/500/thumbs/nametag_me_grn.gif, it means it was left over from the last time! :lol2:

The arrival time is our normal morning time to beat the lunch rush. OK, lately we have been the lunch rush!

According to the sign out front, breakfast is served until 10am, followed by the lunch buffet starting at 11am.

I have laid out a route from the Fort Bend County area (Sugar Land/Richmond/Rosenberg) that covers 112 miles using FM roads for 96% of the ride. We are on Hwy 36 or Hwy 35 for only a few miles. With only 112 miles to cover, there should be no need for a fuel stop enroute. I plan KSU (kick stands up) around 8am.

I have not yet come up with a group departure point, thinking possibly the Fort Bend County Courthouse on HWY 90A in Richmond or the Fort Bend County George Memorial Library on FM762 & Golfview (near Wal-Mart) or the intersection of US59 and FM762 (possibly the Petco parking lot). I don't want to use the Shell station parking lot at that corner because it is on the wrong side of the street and crossing FM762 is a pain at that intersection with the construction traffic. If we meet near US59 & FM762, that will allow Houston area riders to slab it on 59 to the FM762/Richmond exit and meet up there for the ride.

I am open to suggestions.

I don't know how to post a Mapquest route on here and don't have time right now to learn it but we would be heading south on FM762 past Brazos Bend State Park to FM1462. Turning right on FM1462 to Hwy 36 in Brazoria County. Turning left onto Hwy36 to Hwy35 just north of West Columbia. Turning left onto FM524 through Sweeney to FM521. After turning right onto FM521, we stay on FM521 all the way to Hwy35 just north of Palacios in Matagorda County. Turn right onto Hwy35 and travel only about 6 miles into Blessing and to the hotel/cafe.

MapPoint puts that route at 3 hours 23 minutes from my home so I am figuring less than 3 hours from one of the meeting locations above. If we plan KSU between 8 and 8:15am, we should be fine, especially with the +/-5 mph thing I have been seeing as something of a norm.

Thoughts?

Chuck... Put me down as a definite. I hope I am not jinxing myself but after last weekend, I am going. :eat: :rider:

On 521 you will go past the STP nuke; after that you will come to a 4-way stop at the Collegeport road. The next thing will be a short bridge across the Tres Palacios River. If you go on past the bridge about 1/2 mile or so you will see a crossroad intersection. Take a right there and you will have a prettier ride right on in to Blessing. It ain't exactly the hill country, but there are a few curves and curve-like unstraight sections.

See y'all there.

P.S. the peach cobbler is VERY good at the Hotel!

Yeah, something like that. Although, I am probably gonna incorporate Seahog's minor route change. I have been on some of those roads before and scenery is not something they are known for. His is probably better than mine. My route just gets us there without major highway time.

I am a MAYBE at this point as I am scheduled to work that weekend. It's only 12 miles from my front door but I work 63 miles away so I can't just stop by at lunch time...I'll see if I can trade a day or weekend with someone else or take a few hours off...

By that date we should be getting close to or arriving at the house we have rented on the Cherohala Skyway in North Carolina. We leave on the 23rd, get back to Texas on Oct 7th
We are going to try to do a trip report as we go along.

That's good because there isn't much anywhere else along the route. There is something about Brazoria and Matagorda counties in that they don't have much in the way of twisties. Ocassionally they have a little bit of scenery but that's about it. Thanks for the recommendation, Steve. I have already altered my route map in MapPoint. I have not yet fabricated the mount I designed for the Gold Wing to mount my Zumo 450 GPS so doing it in Mapsource and loading it into the Zumo is pointless. I use a pilot's kneeboard for the printed maps/directions from MapPoint.

I'll be there (first pie run  ) and a non-forum member friend plans to tag along with me.

One suggestion for the route you guys are discussing. There is a nice road with some tight curves that adds only one mile to your route. When you come down 762 to 1462, you could go left and then right onto Cow Creek Road. I make a lap from Clear Lake out to that road, it's one of my favorites. If you do, be careful at the beginning bit, there are some tight corners.

Here's a google map showing that change and Seahogs feedback:

Chuck, depending on where Hurricane Ike hits this weekend, we my want to check on the Blessing Hotel afterward to make certain it is still open. Blessing is only about 30 miles as the crow flies from Matagorda Island so that puts it northeast of the island, putting Blessing on the 'dirty' side of the storm when it makes landfall. And that close to the coast, it will take the brunt of the strong winds before the storm starts to degrade. Just my 2 cents...

Let's wait and see what happens. If there's damage and it's within reason, we could see about a "TWT Cleanup Day" with sammiches and pie brought in from offsite. If there isn't damage and the hotel will be open, we go ahead with the pie run as scheduled. If the damage is too much for an afternoon of cleaning and trash removal, then we can try to organize a bigger effort to help out the historic hotel/restaurant.

But for now all we can do is wait and see... :zen:

Chuck, depending on where Hurricane Ike hits this weekend, we my want to check on the Blessing Hotel afterward to make certain it is still open.

I have had a couple of people mention that in PMs. We still have 2 weeks after this weekend. Once we see where Ike goes, we'll try to formulate a plan.

If we need a back-up destination, I am thinking Brenham. Anybody else have any suggestions?

Like Squeak says, we have to wait and see...

My two cents is that we relocate. Even if the restaurant is open, lack of support services like fuel and towing will be questionable and unverifiable. The chance for flats and other mishaps will increase exponentially.

They probably got high wind but as nearby as Sargent is still reporting no electricity on the news. To make matters worse, the area is getting tons of rain today so if they had any sitting water from the storm it'll just be getting worse today.

I too vote for a change of venue, but not a swap with the IPRD, since some of us are already planning for that one. :rider:

Roads & general infrastructure in the Blessing - Matagorda area are fine...
not much storm down that far. Gas station in Blessing is open; no problems there. In 2 weeks I imagine all the roads in and out of Houston will be in decent

It only takes 15 minutes now, before it took a lot longer. Yamaha VStars have a poor oil filter design. The exhaust pipes and driver floorboard have to be removed to get to the oil filter. That's why the relocation kit was put on so that I can do this. But again, any and all help is appreciated.

OK, let's try to take some time out of fixing fences & remodeling the kitchen to get back on this pie thing...

I am finalizing my proposed route now. I did not get a chance to make the ride for time and road conditions because of some pain named Ike so I have a question for anyone who has ridden some of the southern Fort Bend roads. Are Cow Creek Rd and Nash Rd paved roads? They appear to be from Google's satellite images but I need to make sure. Some of the people who have indicated they are going need/want paved roads. I have never ridden those two roads before.

So here is what I am thinking:
Meet at the southwest side of the intersection of FM762 and Hwy59 in the parking lot of the new Academy Sporting Goods. I know some of you have been discussing meeting at 59 & Crabb River Rd but I hate that intersection. It is too big, cars are too fast trying to get under the new underpass and the only place to meet would be the HEB paking lot and that is a pain getting out of sometimes, especially with a Starbuck's Black Eye in the cup holder. It is your call and I will defer to the groups decision but I have made my vote.

Anyway... regardless of the meeting spot, we take 762 all the way around past the nuke plant at Smither's Lake and Brazos Bend State Park to FM1462. The FM762 leg is about 18 miles. We turn left onto FM1462 for only about a mile and turn right onto Cow Creek Rd. We stay on Cow Creek for only about 1.2 miles until it turns into Nash Rd/CR25. This leg is about 14 miles. We turn right off of CR25 onto Hwy35. We stay on Hwy35 for about 10 miles (there is a left turn back in East Columbia but it is still Hwy35) into Old Ocean. In Old Ocean and at FM524, we turn left and take FM524 for about 9 miles to FM521 south of Sweeny.

We turn right onto FM521 until we get to FM2853 just southwest of Blessing. Let's dwell on FM521 a moment... We will be on FM521 for approximately 40 miles. About 22 miles after getting onto FM521, we make a left and FM521 merges with Hwy160. IT IS STILL FM521! About 1.5 miles after the left turn, we make a right and get off of 160 but we are still on FM521.

At FM2853, we turn right. About 8.5 miles later, we turn right onto Hwy35. About a mile later, we turn left onto FM616 that will take us into Blessing and pie, glorious pie.

I know this is a circuitous route with a number of turns but there is just no other more glamorous way to traverse Matagorda County. I just did not want to take Hwy59 all the way to El Campo and then south on Hwy71 to Blessing. To stay on Hwy59 for most of the trip is not why we ride. OK, on a Gold Wing we are comfy there but that is not where I want to be.

I am open to suggestions, flames, darts or pie. I plan to be in the Academy parking lot at Hwy59 and FM762 at 8:00am. KSU (kick stands up) at 8:30am. Please be fueled and ready to roll. There is a Shell station on the northeast corner of that intersection if you forgot to fuel up before you left home or if you want to top off or if you need to empty your bladder. My calculaton is this trip from this departure point is about 103 miles so we should not need a fuel stop. At posted speeds, this trip is supposed to take about 3 hours but I suspect we will get there in less time than that.

Also, I know I came up with this route but I DO NOT WANT TO LEAD. I prefer the tail of the pack. Yeah, I know if you ain't the lead dog, the scenery never changes but I am willing to suffer. If I have to lead, you folks are gonna have to stare at the back side of the Great Pumpkin for 100 miles and listen to Tom Tynan's Home Improvement Show or whatever I am listening to on my MP3 player.

See you Saturday morning...

-Saul

...but because of my oil filter relocation kit they don't stock my oil filter and its taking forever to get the shipment in. I've got to find a better way to deal with this so it doesn't take two weeks for an oil change. :tears:

I get my oil filters for my oil relocation kit at Autozone. I also have a V-Star 1100. This may help:

I am leaving at 5am'ish tomorrow morning, hopefully I won't be late!

Well, our departure has been delayed until my wife gets back from the vet - we just broke up a dog fight in the backyard - they killed a squirrel and then fought over it. One of the dogs has two ugly puncture woulds in her leg. :-(

We have a reservation & will be leaving sometime today. <sigh>

Well, I am about to depart. Susan will stay and see what happens with the pooch. :-( If they get her out at a reasonable time, she may come on down, however, it looks improbable.

Sorry, Raul, didn'r get you processed. See everyone in Blessing. Ride safely.

I have a question for anyone who has ridden some of the southern Fort Bend roads. Are Cow Creek Rd and Nash Rd paved roads? They appear to be from Google's satellite images but I need to make sure. Some of the people who have indicated they are going need/want paved roads. I have never ridden those two roads before.

That road is fully paved from 1462 to 35. It's a bit bumpy in the beginning, with a couple of very tight turns over bridges, so watch your speed at first.

Not sure if Cow Creek is open - it may be mudded over from the storm.

Or will I just have to beat you there?

Remember that the restaurant does not open for lunch until 11:00. I think they serve breakfast until 10:00...

It was right at 300 miles for me - I left at noon - took 20 to I35W, then 77 south in Waco. Stopped for lunch and petrol in Cameron. Took 36 to Wallis then 60. Stopped for photo in Somerville. Stopped to return the wife's call in Brenham (went thru town - there is a bypass that is faster) Stopped in Wharton and arrived in Bay City about 6:15.

Bay City is east of where you want to go but about the same mileage.

Good luck - see you tomorrow...

The power plant is not a nuke it consists of 5 gas fired units and 4 PRB coal fired units. The nuke plant is in Wadsworth. Have fun I will be working at the coal fired unit Saturday.

I am looking forward to the after action reports. This would have been my first pie run except Ike moved Texas/Arkansas to today. I've been a season ticket holder for 24 years and choosing between the pie run and the football game was a difficult decision.
