I have only so much vacation time and so many places to be. I decided today that I won't be going to BB in Feb. Been invited to ride trails in Tennessee in Spring. That will be a perfect compliment to riding the canyons in Utah in the fall. Thus the Balance of My Universe will be maintained.

I need to retire, sell the house and stuff and just ride the bike everywhere..........
Screw the job.

Newbie to the site with a new (to me) 07 KLR. I'll be there. I own 40 acres near Black Hill - 23 miles N of Study Butte. Terlingua ranch property is still pretty cheap if you deal with locals. I guarantee you can ride Terlingua ranch's 1000 plus miles of DS roads if you are member of POATRI (see poatri.org)! Awesome country but leave only tracks!

Uncle or Richard, do you guys have approximate numbers from last year's event? I was just wondering how this one was shaping up compared to last year.

WoodButcher
11-19-2008, 12:39 PM
Well, just looking at the attendance threads, we are up to 44 right now and last year there were only 50 names total.

I looked at a couple of pictures from the ride report and tried to count bikes, but only got 29. That seems awfully low to me. So guessing I say close to the attendance list.

Richard_
11-19-2008, 05:14 PM
I think 50 - 60 people attended last year. Uncle had a number of friends from Oklahoma attend who did not sign the attendance roster.

Based on the response so far, I expect more riders to attend this year.

jhansen
11-19-2008, 08:04 PM
Not that I commit to anything past next week, but is there anybody going down there on a street bike? It will be highly unlikely that I will have a DS (unless I win the lotto) and wonder if there are street people going too.

Richard_
11-19-2008, 08:42 PM
Jeff,

I don't know if there will be riders on street-only bikes, but last year there were riders who only rode pavement (including me). Street riders are very welcome at Uncle's "Run what ya brung" non-event. Hope you can make it.

I have a street bike and I really want to do this trip! :rider:

Is anyone else from Austin going? I'm waffling between riding out or trailering. I even priced out renting a pop up trailer with a "toy hauler deck."

Roundblack,
I think there are lots of riders from Austin attending. Some ride and some
trailer etc. Last year Rusty and I trailered three bikes and hoteled it.
There are many options. RV parks, free camping (near Uncles) Motels and of course
Lajitas (more upscale). Mabey you can score room with someone who will be taking a large trailer. There are lots of rides for street only bikes. Its amazing how much stuff the street and D/S guys carry with them.

Let's go....any more news. Any tracks to share?

Here's the latest news from Big Bend, as of Jan 3rd.

The river is still high, but the flood waters have receeded. All the roads affected by the flood are now re-opened, with the exception of River Road in the park. The west end of River Road is closed but the east end is open, allowing access to the southern end of Black Gap Rd. I will be surprised if River Road is still closed in Feb.

Hwy 170 is re-opened, though there is a short bypass just east of Presidio. The bypass is a graded rock road but can be ridden by any motorcycle.

There is a new camping hostel open for business in Terlingua, next door to the Boathouse Restaurant/Bar. It is called Las Ruinas Camping Hostel. I don't know much about it but believe it has a kitchen, showers, and toliet. It also has some nice looking "Miner Tents" for rent if you want to camp but don't have a tent. Call "The Boathouse Restaurant and Bar" to make reservations.

 That makes me happy!!!!

All the roads affected by the flood are now re-opened, with the exception of River Road in the park. The west end of River Road is closed but the east end is open, allowing access to the southern end of Black Gap Rd. I will be surprised if River Road is still closed in Feb.

I heard a rumor that a certain rider (who shall remain nameless) did the entire River Road while down there with the Desert Rats. I don't know how legal that might or might not be, but I can say that if it's not open by the end of Uncle's ride, that I'll probably chance it anyway.

You talking about *****? You couldn't get him to stop talking about how nice (and difficult) it was. Long silt beds and sand. Virgin silt beds even. He suggested I that I shouldn't try it on the Transalp. I'll bet he fesses up anyway. No visual evidence he was there anyway because he didn't stop and take pictures.

Well good for him. He is has more guts than me. When I was down there at there at end of October the west end was closed. I entered through the east end and went down the GAP and rode for about another 10 miles or so and got tired and turned around. I was a little tired from the first day of riding and if I was with another rider I probably would of tried the whole run but did not want to wipe out or get stuck with the "unknow" in the middle of the Chihuahan Desert. I am really getting pumed up about this trip and truth be said I wish it was at the end of this month cause "I AM READY TO ROLL!!!" Anyway looking forward to meeting everyone and listening and learing from the veterans trail blazers!

There is an RV park in Study Butte, and another in Terlingua itself.

Gas stops are determined by whichever route you choose to ride. Mostly we meet for breakfast and group up with riders that want to go the same way that day. Nothing is set in advance, it is (as Richard says) a non-event event.

I just spent last week in Big Bend. Two locations for gas.

Just out side the park near the city of Terlingua. Intersection of 170 and 118 comming into the park on the west side. Two gas stations located at the intersection.
In the middle of the park at the intersection of 118 (or Maverick Dr) and 385. Also listed as Big Bend Headquarters and visiter Center (Panther Junction). One station located there.

Those are the only ones I found.

WoodButcher
01-06-2009, 03:57 PM
If you can make it 100 miles on tank then you can do a lot of riding there. You still need to be careful, but that will get you on a lot of good roads.

Other gas station is in Rio Grande village, far south east corner of the park.

skup
01-06-2009, 04:06 PM
I agree. 100 miles on a tank will get you back to a gas station with out too much problems. In addition the gas station in the center of the park is at most 40 miles from the farthest locations in the park.

Got a tire question! what type of off road riding will I be able to do with the stock metzler tourance tire that comes on the 2009 R1200GSA. or should I go ahead and get a more agressive dirt tire now instead of waiting till I wear them out.

If it's dry the Tourance will be okay on 90% of the dirt roads. The 10% or so of sand and/or pea gravel will be a handful, but it would be a handful on the big GS anyway.

If you want to make change prior to heading out, certainly a more agressive tire will improve things when you are on the dirt. It's not necessary, but can be a good thing.

I like to run a knobby front tire and a ds rear tire on my Strom. I've got a TKC80 on the front and a Tourance on the back and find it to be a very good combination. The knobby front provides additional traction in the dirt but performs fine for me on pavement.

Any routes available for people with one good foot? My new seat should be here Friday and it is killing me keeping my foot elevated and crutching around the house.

Check out the National Geographic map page. I picked up this map in Big Bend but you can get it off their page. It shows the off road routes and clasifies them by dificulty (paved road, improved road, high clearance road, and four wheel drive road). It is also GPS compatible.

I expect riders will be staying all over the place, some RVing, some camping and some motelling it, so no central home base. My recommendation is for the motel crowd to stay at the El Dorado due to its central location.

We will all meet up each morning at Kathy's Kosmic Kowgirl Kafe for an optional riders meeting. Evening will be on the front porch at the Starlight Theater.

That would depend on your tire choice, your skill/comfort level, and your "adventure" tolerance. I've done some small sections on my Strom but others have done all/most of it on big GSs, Tigers, and TransAlps.

Welcome to the forum. :welcome:

Most of the non-paved roads in the park are class 2 roads (Motorcycle Non-Paved Road Rating System (http://texasadventure.net/Motorcycle%20Non-Paved%20Road%20Rating%20System.htm)), which are rideable on a Strom. It will be a handful in the sand and loose gravel sections but a rider with average dirt skills should be able to get through. I recommend that you have armor on the bike (skid plate and crash bars) before tackling a class 2 road.

I was wondering if anyone has GPS routes or tracks for the BB ride? Ae there any preferred routes? Curious and excited!!

No planned routes for this. Hence the non-event status. No planned routes, no registration, no fees.

However, there are some people that have been out there that have gps routes and maps. Best thing I can suggest it at the breakfast "rider meeting" get to talking and find a group that is your speed and going to do something that sounds like your ability.

I'll post some map links later and maybe some gps tracks. I just don't have them on this computer.

Perfect timing on your question.

I just finished a Big Bend ride guide. The guide is a 48 page, spiral bound 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 book that includes 12 different routes - 8 dual sport routes and 4 pavement-only routes. Two 11x17 color maps are included with the ride guide. One of them is a topo map of the Terlingua Ranch area and the other is a map of the primitive roads in Big Bend. The guide also has a link to download the routes for your GPS.

I expect to have the guide back from the printer this week.

The cost for the guide and maps is $25 ($27 if you use paypal). I'll be posting a separate thread about the guide, but if you want to order one now you can do so.

I will mail the guides and maps to anyone who orders one. Or I can hand carry it to Big Bend in Feb. I will bring a few extras to Big Bend with me, but order one in advance if you are sure you want one.

He's been very nice about it. He hasn't blamed me at all yet. I led the parade down a trail called Crippling Creek. 8 riders stopped at the entrance to ponder, 7 entered the trail...6 came out. Actually James rode out too, but not in the same condition he went in.

Well, the KLR got dropped off at the shop last night. He says it should be ready by Friday, possibly early next week. So if that works out, I am in. Steve "Desmo" is also in.

I am in Huntsville. Our plan is for me to meet at Steve's (in Magnolia) and leave from there early Thursday morning. We were going to truck out in his truck with the bikes in the back. However, if there is anyone in the area that might like to go out with us, I have access to a large Mega Cab Dodge and a trailer that can hold five DS bikes with no problem. The truck will seat five adults with room to spare and has a covered bed for all our gear. Shoot me a PM if you are interested in hooking up with us so we can work out the details. I think we will be camping.

Would it be ok to use a legalized CRF 230f? Its kinda small bore but its great for offroad so light :D. I'm thinking about going have never ridden much offroad as far as legal duel sporting, recently made it legal. Pending weather and work (I travel with job), I might appear :)

This little bike only goes about 65 top speed, and comfortably around 50 or 55.

That is what Ed29 used last year :thumb: There were quite a few 200-250cc bikes out there if I recall correctly. Top speed is not really an issue. In the park the max speed is 45 mph everywhere.

One of the guys going out with me will be on a CRF 230 that he is just finishing up the plating process on. I knew someone else that had done it and besides the dual sport kit they went up one tooth on the front sprocket so that cruising at 55 was at lower RPM's. Since the National Park max speed limit is 45 and there is only a short stretch of pavement between Study Butte and the park you won't need to go too fast. If you decide to do more pavement and head for the State Park, you still only have a short section of higher speed highway, but longer than to the NP.

Sorry, the short answer is yes, it will work fine.

DONT ride any of Ed's bikes, the only outcome of doing that is you end up owning more bikes.

It is an XR-250, but there was a CRF-230 out there last year too. Its rider had a blast and range was not a problem at around 100 MPG. I think it was geared up a bit as the rider reported being able to reach 70 or so on pavement. But in most places out there your comfy cruise of 50-55 means you will see more of the great scenery.

In short I encourage you to go with teh 230 for this trip.

I second this motion. I rode his CRF450 for less than 2 miles on the trails, when I stopped him and remarked that I had to own one of them. A couple months later and I bought a WR450.

Sorry but I am going to have to bail out on Uncles ride. Really wish I could be there. Started installing a new metal roof on my house and it is taking longer than I thought. I Feel guilty about leaving half a roof on my house and then going away for 8 days. My wife would kill me. Be Safe- have FUN - will try to make Mextrex again.

I had both my Transalp and WR there last year and at Christmas. I just left the WR cable locked to the post outside my room last year. At Xmas I was at Uncle's and just left it sitting out. However there weren't too many of us there then. But I would plan on some sort of lock for the WR, just for peace of mind.
