We've had some of the best pie in the state, even some of the best BBQ. We've ridden for FM roads and for some of the most beautiful Churches and Bridges in the state.
I pose a new challenge. Historical markers from 1 to ????
I had a link with all the locations and will try to find it again and post it up.
But in the mean time, who's up for it? I know some of you probably already have pics.
We needed another excuse to ride, right?:rider:
Here (http://www.9key.com/markers/map1.asp) you can find a link that has a map and can click on each county for historical markers. However, the marker number listed here isn't the actual marker number. But it does have directions and maps. You can cross reference the name Here (http://atlas.thc.state.tx.us/shell-county.htm) to get the actual number.
So here we go, in no particular order although I will try to keep them in numerical order. Also, where I can find it, the description will be a link to more details and maps from the 9key site.

FM roads in sequential order is already in progress.
We tried the TDCJ/prison challenge but everyone got their knickers in a bind over being detained or arrested.
We tried food - post your best BBQ for the year. I'm not sure we actually followed through on that one.
Historical markers will be tough to keep up with, but if you are willing to accept the responsibility and be the caretaker of the project I'm sure some folks will play along.

Getting lost might be an easy enough way to collect some though - just ride along and admire the scenery whichever way you are headed and keep an eye out for a "Historical Marker 1 Mile" sign (or similar) then stop and take a picture. They might even tell you where you're at so you can figure out how to get home. :lol2:
So Mav - rules? Incentives? Pecking order?

I think it would be hard to get the bike in the picture on a lot of these. You would probably have to post two pics if that were the case, one of the marker with the print legible, the other with the bike in the pic, but it would be too far away to read.

yea, was thinking that, but if given the name of the site, I could get the write up that I've been linking. But, I think just the sign will work. I'm digging up a few that I have but yea, My bike is in the pic but you can't really makeout the sign.

If you look at the links that David is adding in the first post, that information is included in a lot of them, as well as additional information. However, the Maypearl Cemetery marker has incomplete information - looks like you can add that via the search site.
Here's one that was on the grounds of the Goliad County courthouse:
http://www.twtex.com/photopost/data/500/goliad_tornado_4586q.JPG
It looks like marker #2207 (if I have figured out what Maverick did). link (http://www.9key.com/markers/marker_detail.asp?atlas_number=5175002207)
This one is NOT a historical marker but indicates that the courthouse is a historical building:
http://www.twtex.com/photopost/data/500/gozales_courthouse_4598q.JPG
And this one looks like #7236 (http://www.9key.com/markers/marker_detail.asp?atlas_number=5349007236). I liked the placement of this one since I got the county name and the front of the building behind it.
http://www.twtex.com/photopost/data/500/medium/navarro_county_courthouse_2793q.JPG
All of these were collected on other treks, either looking for courthouses or some of the "Everywhere in Texas" locations (the two cemeteries).
I have bike pics to go with the primary search (building or sign, just not the historical marker).

If Maverick includes the links to the marker site in post #1, all the text is there.
Sometimes it is hard to get a good, readable photo without making it too big. My originals are 3000x2000, so I cut them down to 1/4 dimension of that (1/16 in size).

My 80 year old clock works just fine. I think the techies just reset the 2000 crash to reset in 2009. But with the Hist. markers game I like it a little better than the FM game and it can actuliy complement both games. After reading some of my local marker facts I learned a little about the area I live in. And plan to do some local riding to explore some more. pics. to come soon. I can not wait to try some cold weather gear I resently purchased, at least when it gets cold. A friend sent me this today!!!!!
My first bike was a Suzuki, as well was my Dirt Bike, good stuff.
My XS1100 is currently hibernating(-12 actual outside).
Where you working these days?.

nah, it was just a glitch with the photobucket site. I rebooted and it's all good. the difficulty with the 9key site was it was looking at a different name for the site and having issues. Go figure with that much data. But I was able to wrangle around it and get the last couple.

The Alamo Springs Cafe. If you haven't been there, it's a very nice ride to get there & a great burger once you arrive. They were voted best burger in Texas by somebody, at some point in the past.

So we can post any historical markers we have? Are we keeping track of how many there are and how many are posted?

I believe Mavrick said he'd take control of the administration of this thread. As for ones we had, I just went through my archives and pulled them to a single folder.

Marker 5465002556
Hood's Devil's River Fight - The men of Company G, a small unit of the U. S. 2nd cavalry, left Fort Mason on July 5, 1857, under the command of Lt. John Bell Hood (1831-1879), in pursuit of Comanche Indians in the vicinity. Traveling northwest, they discovered a fresh Indian trail leading southward toward Mexico. Crossing bluffs near the Devil's River on July 20, the men encountered an Indian camp on a ridge about two miles from the steam, marked by a white flag. Suspecting an ambush, Hood proceeded cautiously toward the ridge. A small band of Indians advanced to meet Hood's party. Then, throwing down the flag to signal their concealed allies, the Indians attacked. Outnumbered, and hampered by brush fires set by Indian women, the soldiers were forced into fierce hand-to-hand combat. They heard the loud cries of Comanche women through the smoke and dust, indicating an Indian retreat. Two cavalrymen, William Barry and Thomas Ryan, were killed, and five others, including Hood, were wounded. Later reports revealed that nineteen Indians were killed, and many more wounded. Hood and his men were later cited for valor in army reports. 1987)

I saw a Historical Markers Contest thread over on Dual Sport Riders of Louisiana and noticed one of the TWT members from east of the Sabine and Mississippi Rivers posting in the thread and thought I would post a link to it here. Doug did a great job as usual on the photos and the report.

This is so cool!
It's been forever since I was last here but I saw this come up in a search and had to butt in.

In particular, this section http://www.markeroni.com/lists/ has resources for historical markers in all states. :)
