Well, I've got another trip planned for the week of April 20th this year. This time my plan is to head towards Tennessee and the surrounding areas.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=austin,+tx&daddr=US-64+to:US-129+to:Hardin+St%2FUS-221%2FUS-321+to:39.474365,-78.733521+to:Cumberland,+MD+to:US-287+N%2FUS-81+N&hl=en&geocode=%3BFXQeGwIdVIdw-g%3BFRi_HAIdhIH_-g%3BFZ6bKAIdSL4h-w%3B%3B%3BFSYZ9gEdFLoy-g&mra=dpe&mrcr=1&mrsp=4&sz=9&via=1,2,4&dirflg=h&sll=39.200334,-78.87085&sspn=1.515433,2.460937&ie=UTF8&ll=35.603719,-88.242187&spn=12.707197,28.037109&z=6
That's an incredibly rough, 10 minutes on Google Maps route, but it gives you an idea of where I want to head. Roads/routes/places to see/do would be hugely helpful. I've never been to that area of the country, so I'm all ears!
Stipulations:
- 9 days. Taking a week off work and have the weekends on each side. Can't be any longer.
- ~3,500mi +/-. I found on my trip last year, 400mi/day is a good balance for me between not feeling rushed and still getting to stop when I want and smell the roses. We can do longer if it means getting to something neat, but this isn't an Iron Butt excursion.
- Paved. I did lots of National Forest roads on my trip through the SW last year, but this year I'll be with 2 HD Ultra Classics and a BMW RT so... better keep it paved.
Other than that, tell me what we'd be fools to miss. We're not really aiming to get anywhere in particular, we can ride to different places each day, or make home base somewhere and make day trips from there each day. We'll probably be motel-ing it, I doubt I even take the camp gear this time.
I did this same type post last year before my trip and got suggestions on roads that were the highlight of the trip... I know lots of you guys have been out that way, I'm sure you've got your favorites...
