River Road (FM 170) detour?

Hi all,
I will be in the Big Bend area March 8-14. We want to ride FM170 west to Presidio. I hear the road has a gravel detour of a few miles. Is this true, and if so has anyone ridden it on a street bike? Is it easily done?

Paul and I rode it this weekend. It is fine on a street bike if you just go slow. Graded Rock and in decent shape.

It's 1.8 miles now though it was 14 miles when it first was used as a detour.

Worth it for the trip to Presidio.
