Brian Montgomery collided with a car turning into a driveway while riding the Pig Trail in Arkansas on Thursday.
He is in serious but stable condition. Injuries include broken bones - compound fracture of pelvis in two places, bruised lungs and other internal injuries. He is paralyzed from the waist down. Second surgery scheduled for tomorrow to fuse his back so he can be relocated closer to Houston.
He has been a friend and fellow TSBA riding partner for the last couple of years. Hoping for a speedy recovery.

I'm really sorry to hear stuff like this. His injuries will have a profound impact on his life from this point forward. All of us must accept this possibility whenever we throw a leg over. Ride safe guys!
Brian, God speed.....

Chris and I just got in from Arkansas. Here is the whole story, as I know it to be, regarding Brian.
1. The T-4 vertebra fractured.
2. Several ribs were broken - one lung punctured.
3. Brian's pelvis also broken.
4. His right wrist was broken in several places, requiring surgery and 4 pins.
5. Brian has NO injuries whatsoever to his head.
6. He has very few minor scrapes on his right leg, and two of his toes are bruised.
7. Brian NEVER lost consciousness from the time of the impact until they sedated him at the hospital to put in the breathing tube.
One of his sisters was teasing him about his haircut. Of course, Brian can't keep "quiet" about this, even though he can't talk right now. So, he flipped her off! [Smile]
During some conversations of people in his ICU room, he discovered that Brandy had started smoking again at the accident site. He had Brandy called to his bedside and shook his fist at her, letting her know that he did not approve. Then he flipped her off! She told him to give her a break, but he shook his head and mouthed, "No break!"
The staff - everyone from the office staff to nursing to doctors - are WONDERFUL. Brian was life flighted to a full fledged trauma center. They know what they are doing. I have no concerns for his welfare at all as far as the degree of care he is receiving.

:tab Thanks Cindy! I know it had to be rough being there, but I know he most certainly appreciates you guys being there with him! Please do keep us updated and let us know if there is anything specific we can do to help him out.

I called the blood center that supplies blood to the hospital where Brian is. Unfortunately, they can not accept blood credit transfers.
Brandy said Brian had a rough night, but that is good news in a way. He was extremely uncomfortable, BUT it was because he had breathed on his own TWICE yesterday!!!! :D
They are trying hard to get Brian weened off the respirator, and that will be a huge hurdle for Brian to get over. He won't be so frustrated not being able to communicate, plus lots less discomfort.
Brandy wants all of you to know she truly appreciates the outpouring of concern, prayers, etc. Please keep it coming - the days are going to be long and hard for quite a while to come.

Brian made it through surgery today just fine.
There is a small infection in his belly, but there is NO infection in the lower abdomen.
They all appreciate the messages, concern, prayers, etc. - no amount can be too much.
My prayers go out to Brian and his family.

Brandy keeps asking me to make sure you all know how much she (they) appreciates your prayers, outpouring of concern, and contact.
This has been extremely overwhelming for her, especially since she is so far away from home. I wish I could be there physically for her, but at least I'm a line to home.

Awesome! That is a huge step and good news. It also does wonders for the people around someone in his condition when they can communicate with him. I remember how relieved we were after my Dad's accident when he finally started making sense again (as much as he did before anyway...). For a while we were terrified what the exent of any brain injuries night be. He was very fortunate that the only lingering issue is some scar tissue in the brain lining from the impact. Even though he is not out of the woods yet, I am sure Brandy is feeling much better.

Howdy,
Cam has agreed to let me handle the donations since he is not setup well to accept the donations. I am set up with Paypal and can accept credit cards. For anyone wishing to make donations, please us the following email address:
Tourmeister@twtex.com
I have done this quite a few times in the past so I have a good deal of experience. Please be aware that any donations made with a credit card will have a small fee deducted by PayPal. I will have a certified check or cashier's check drawn up and sent to Brian for the total amount of donations minus any of the PayPal fees.
Even if you cannot make it to the benefit ride, I would encourage you to donate whatever you can. No, we won't be able to pay off his medical bills, but perhaps Brandy can use the money to do something special for him. That would mean a lot more tha just paying a few bills.

I also sent the hospital a thank you note for the level of care they are providing per Cindy's comments and received a response a few minutes ago...
Brian,
We appreciate your kind words. It sounds as if he has many friends who are sending emotional support. Thank you, also, for taking the time to write.
Hope all of the Texas T's will come to Fayetteville for Bikes, Blues & BBQ.
We would love to have you in our city. We had over 200,000 attendees last
year. Here is a link to the their website.

Stuart, you may also want to share the link to the thread about making donations for Brian. It is a sticky in the General Forum. I can no longer post on the TSBA site.

I have posted the link on TSBA and HSN.
Brian's sister posted on TSBA, asking to e-mail frequently. They deliver to Brian every day.
She said they started discussions today on transferring him back to Memorial Hermann! Brandy told me last night their goal is to be able to trasfer him by the end of next week. Let's all keep our fingers crossed.
Also, Brian's back surgery is scheduled for next Wednesday.
Keep the prayers and good wishes coming!

:tab Cindy, do you know what they are trying to accomplish with the back surgery? I'm just curious what it is for? To remove bone fragments, exploratory to get a better idea of the damage, etc,...?

Scott,
I just sent a donation to your PayPal account. I am terrible with names, does anyone have a picture of Brian to post here. It helps us old guys connect a name with a face.
Thanks for helping once again.

My understanding from speaking with the neurogsurgeon last Saturday is they are operating to clean out some of the bone fragments, check to see the ACTUAL damage to the spinal cord, and fuse his vertabrae together.

Brandy said they are transferring Brian back to Houston tomorrow!!!
Brandy gets to fly back with him, so that kind of puts a kink in her plans. She has to leave Brian's truck there, but it will be guarded - only for 10 days. She needs someone to help her get it back in the next week. Any volunteers?
Brian's back surgery is put off for 1-2 weeks to get his white count down.
Keep the prayers coming - it's doing some good!!!
