Howdy,
:tab The maintenance day went off withut a hitch. I got my chain and sprockets changed with no trouble. Afterwards we went to the local BBQ joint for lunch. Then we rode for a little over 100 miles before ending up at King's Cafe for ice cream.
:tab The weather was nice. It was partly cloudy and in the low nineties most of the day. Sunady was more of the same and I got in about 150 miles of riding and more ice cream :P Met a few other riders at King's. Mike was on a brand new Aprillia Tuono, schweet! His bud Ed was riding a pristine red 91 VFR750. He is the original owner and the bike looks incredible!
:tab I hope most of you managed to get out and get in some riding!

Mike Guillory? OilGuy? On a Tuono? And he didn't tell us?
I got out early this morning for a run down at Memorial Park, then back and forth on the newly repaved FM149 between FM1097 and FM1791 a few times, then home by 9:30. I need to change my oil soon, just haven't gotten to it yet...

Hehe... No not Guillory, a different Mike I had never met before. Mike will keep his VFR until it rots out from under him or he dies first.

OK Scott give it up on the "local BBQ place." I have heard some interesting rumours about a great place in the Huntsville area and so I have to know...where do the locals go?
There is nothing posted in the eateries section.
It was a great weekend. I put in 200 miles on Saturday including a run down 149 and 1374 (based on a comment in one of Scott's ride reports). Sunday was spent helping redecorate the bedroom :( . My wife let me buy the bike and ride most Saturday mornings I can spend some time painting for her.

Howdy,
:tab The place most people have probably heard of is the Mount Zion Baptist Church. This is a very small church here in town that has a BBQ setup next to it that is nearly the size of the church. They have ribs to die for. Take Exit 114 off of I-45 and go East. You cannot miss it, it is on the right. You'll smell it before you see it. They keep strange hours though and I am not sure what they are. I'll try to find out. Folks from all over Texas have come here for their BBQ.
:tab The other place is more conventional. It is McKenzie's BBQ on Eleventh st. Take Exit 116 off of I-45 and go East. Go through the first light (Golden Corral on left, Brookshire Bro's on right), and then after cresting the hill, there is a strip mall on the left. In that center is the restaurant. They have both a BBQ place and a Burger place that are connected. ALL of their food is fantastic. Their ribs are incredible also. It only takes me a few to get full because they are usually so large. I'm also really partial to their smoked Ham!!
:tab I guess I did not even think about putting them in the Eateries section because they are right here in town and I seldom think of Huntsville as a riding destination for anyone  My bad!

I probably saw some of you if you were on 149 late in the afternoon. I road the Texas Brazos Trail from Navasota to North Zulch (ugly little town) then swung over Madisonville (much nicer town) where I picked up 90 then to 149 then home in Spring. I took 105 from Conroe to Navasota and quite frankly I wouldn't reccomend it. It's boring and unattractive. Actually, the 39 portion of the Texas Brazo Trail was pretty lame, too. Luckily 149 was there to finish up on and put a smile on my face!
Are there any other roads within 150 miles of Houston that are as good as 149?

Howdy,
Are there any other roads within 150 miles of Houston that are as good as 149?
:tab Hmm... Well, not really. Now that 149 has been repaved it is pretty nice. The curves have a nice rythm. There is FM 3090 out past Anderson and it is fun, but it often has quite a bit of gravel in the corners and on weekends is patrolled because the locals aren't real fond of bikes  There are a few roads with short sections that are fun, but not much that is several miles or more in length.
:tab A lot of the roads that I hit when I do the East Texas rides are similar to 149 and usually a little longer. I have a nice route with many of them strung together. It is a 400 mile day, round trip from Huntsville. Tack on another 100 or so depending on where you live in the Houston area.
:tab I have not actually been out in the area of Fayetteville or New Ulm, but there are supposed to be some good roads out in that area. If you go out far enough, there is Park Road 1 at Bastrop. It is more of a scenic ride as opposed to a fast ride. FM 390 Between Burton and William Penn, is a lot of fun, fast sweepers and some tighter corners in the mix.
:tab Just North of Madisonville, there are some really fun roads. They run roughly parallel to I-45 on the East side. These roads are like roller coasters because they run up and down with the rolling hillsides. Good fun.
:tab I feel for you... Living in Houston and riding a motorcycle is kind of lame :P

Thanks Scott! I will give both a try at some point soon.
There used to be a place in town called Haley's or Halley's. Do you know of it? Is it still there? Is it worth trying? We lived in Huntsville during the summers and that was our special treat place to eat. Of course, being a kid, I liked the Dairy Princess best...

:tab Hmm... never heard of that or the Dairy Princess :? I've only lived here for about 10 years. There are a lot of old places that aren't around anymore.
