Ok, but what would be a decent (non-interstate) means of getting there from here? Anyone from Houston thinking about going to this?

Although I haven't lived there in over 35 years, Lockhart is my hometown and I get back there as often as I can. BBQ in this town is yuuuuuuummmmmy! :chug: Blacks' is the place locals like to go when they (also) want chicken as Kruez don't play that.

Unfortuantely I can't recommend any roads since I haven't a clue as to their numbers because I've never needed to know them. :oops: In general terms, southeast of town will be your best bet direction for FM's.

From a quick glance you can talk highway 90 out of Houston to Shiner, then 95 up to Lockhart. US 90 won't that interesting, but 95 should be better.

Squeaky, the usual route to Orsak's in Fayetteville will get you halfway to Lockhart. From there you could run over to La Grange then take -

* Hwy 77 south out of La Grange to FM 2436
* 2436 W to 609
* 609 S to 2237
* 2237 W to the town of Cistern
* Jeddo Road W out of Cistern to FM 713
* 713 W to FM 20
* 20 W to Lockhart

My only concern with this route is that I've never ridden Jeddo Road and have no idea if it's paved or not for the 8 miles or so you'd be on it. But with your V-Strom, that shouldn't be an issue anyway. ;-)

Cool, thanks for the route. Looks good on the map, and I'll just take it easy on the unpaved stuff since I haven't put my bash plate on yet.

Anyone else in/around Houston considering going and want to tag along?

Beth and I will try to make it. We are heading to Austin Friday afternoon for the weekend I think. So we will ride down from there. Is there a meet point for the Austin riders?

Is there a meet point for the Austin riders?

Not that I know of. :shrug: I was thinking of heading east to meet up with the Houston riders in LaGrange, if they don't mind. I'd be leaving Austin around 8:00, taking 969 to 71, then P1, then 153.

Does anyone else in Austin have an alternate plan? Does anyone know if there's a gas station at the intersection of 183 and 969, where we could meet? I can drive over there to select a meeting spot later this week, and will post it by Thursday. I know for sure that there is NOT a Taco Cabana in that area. ;-)

I don't know if there is one there. But there is a pair of gas stations at the intersection of FM 812 and Hwy 183 (right at the SW corner of the airport fenceline). The station on the south side of FM 812 is a Chevron, I think. It has a big parking lot where riders can gather out of the way of other customers, AND it on the southbound side of the road so it'll be easy to pull out as a group.

I doubt I can go this time, but I just might change my mind and meet up with y'all if things change.

Anybody else from the Houston area planning to go? How 'bout you Bagwell?

As mentioned before, anybody who wants to join me and Squeaky for the ride out to Lockhart can meet us at the Jack-in-the-Box in the town of Brookshire just south of I-10 at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning. We plan on leaving there at 8:30, and we'll be taking a nice backroads route all the way.

Weatherwise, the outbound leg shouldn't be too bad as the temps are predicted to get up only into the the low-to-mid 80's before lunchtime. No promises about how hot it might feel on the way back, but it's only going to get worse before it gets better, so you might as well take the opportunity to ride while conditions are still somewhat tolerable. ;-)

Austin area riders: Is there anyone who'd like to ride together to LaGrange to meet up with the Houston riders? There's an Exxon station at the corner of US 183 and Loyola Lane where we can meet. This is just one mile north Webberville Road (FM 969), which will be the route to Bastrop. The address is: 6518 Ed Bluestein Blvd Austin, TX 78723-2908. I'll plan to be there by 8:15.

Kickstands up at 8:30. We will take backroads for the most part, and meet the Houston riders in LaGrange around 10am, at the Texaco station on U.S. 77 just south of the center of town.

You're riding to Lagrange to get to Lockhart :scratch

We will be leaving from North Austin at 1431 and 183. Probably about 9:30 or so. Anyone from up there going? We'll probably run LCR to 620 to Bee Cave and then comd down 12 to 150 and come around the South end of Austin.

Adios,

By the way, I will be bringing some of the new TWT hats with me. I know have them with red, blue or white lettering. You can see the blue one here (http://twtex.com/viewtopic.php?p=49652#49652), the red and white are the same. They are $20 each. Also, I have the kiddie hat for Conner if you are coming Andy. If you are interested, please post something here so I have an idea how many and what colors to bring. Packing space will be tight as Beth and I will be two up.

Rebecca,

What time did you all get back to Houston?

Squeaky
06-11-2005, 10:33 PM
The ride back was less than direct. Lots of stops, long breaks... I think we hit Katy/Houston by 6:30/6:45?

scratch
06-12-2005, 01:56 PM
The stops on the trip back to Houston were a nice way to relax and cool off for a while. We even had a chiropractor along to sort out the kinks. ;-)

With the return of summer-like temps, that will probably be the longest ride I'll attempt until next fall. But it was well worth slogging through the heat; Black's is a must-do for true-Q aficionados, and a really fun group of folks turned out. 8-)

P.S. My thanks to DPS Officer Morton - I appreciate the restaurant suggestions in La Grange...and for being nice enough to only give me a warning ticket for speeding. :oops: :-D
