Yo folks! Anyone know some good trails around Beaumont? I'm back on a KLR after an almost 2-year absence from my last dual sport (a different klr :D) and I'm getting bored with the street pretty quick!

As you know, there's not much for trails in Beaumont. All private land, flat and usually muddy as can be. A lot of peeps have been riding the High Island to Sabine Pass route lately. I've been seeing a lot of them as they pull into Sabine since I work there. I think you need to stir up some more interest in another East Texas ride before it's too dang hot! :rider:

Yeah, seems to be the trend for finding trails in Beaumont: Leave Beaumont! :lol2: I might try some weekend rides up to Sam Houston at some point, I hear there are some good trails up that way. It sure would be nice if we had some local trails that weren't 4x4 mud bogs though

I haven't riden out of Beaumont in a long time, but if you go north and east out of there you can pick up dirt raods going north toward the lakes area and beyond. There are tons of dirt roads in East Texas. Check out the East Texas ride report here to get an idea.

Not sure on the west loop, but the east loop at SHNF was really soft and whooped up. It'd be do-able but challenging on a KLR. Post up if you plan a trip.:rider:

You bet! My current KLR is set up for mostly street riding (that will change) but my last one made the rounds a few times up at the red river park, so I'm ready for the challenging trails! (as long as mud is not a factor :lol2: )

After the storms we got this weekend, I'm betting mud will be on the agenda for a couple weeks to come.

Wow! I didn't know we had so many Beaumonters here. I'd be up for an "on pavement" ride some Sunday or just meet up sometime. The West Bar and Grill on Calder next door to my bakery has great burgers and such. I don't ride off road on purpose but I ran across this link (http://www.dualsportridersoflouisiana.com/) on adv that might help. You might ask around on HalfFastRiders (http://www.dualsportridersoflouisiana.com/) too.

There's a gang of hard core dirt guys that meet for lunch at New York Pizza Pasta on Calder @ Thomas on Fridays and they're all on the HalfFastRiders board too.
Claiborne National Forest is worth the trip for some dirt trails. Not much dual sporting, some dirt roads, mostly double-track, some single-track. I've done it on my XR650R, it's a workout.

they meet at different places every week if you need to know where ask for a phone call on the Halffastlist. They are also not hard core dirt some are ex roadracers and some are ex or current flat track or even trials.
edit
ps I am going after 4 on monday so I hope I have the right spot because it is about 2 hrs away.

if it is a workout for you on your xr it will be a real work out for some on a klr it would be a work out for me on my drz.

Where is Claiborne National Forest?
:doh::doh::doh:
Forest Service website is down right now, but here's the address.
www.fs.fed.us/r8/kisatchie/calcasieu-rd/evangeline/trails/claiborne.htm
Drive to Forest Hill Louisiana, keep going a few miles hwy 112 east to Camp Claiborne.
This google map shot comes up with the trailhead at the top left corner. Zoom out to see how to get there.

Hey Calvin, Here's a link to one of my trips over there. http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27748&highlight=louisiana
Take a look at the route in post #15. Zoom in to 1.5 miles, and you'll see it's a whole nother world over there. Out of the three trail systems I've been on, I like Claiborne the best. It's a blast with something for everyone. There's some sections you can ride a Harley on and then there's a singletrack that'll challenge even the best wood's bike.:rider:

Hey Tim, nice report and I would like to ride there sometime.
I am thinking of going to Arkansas in May, do you have any rides you are going on in the near future?

Calvin, I've got a couple of rides I'd like to do before it gets too hot. One is camp at BA Stienhagen Lake and finish fixing East Tx. Two is develop a DS route from Moscow to Broken Bow.
I'm also planning on finally going back to Arkansas. It's been 5 years since I've done any real riding over there. I'm thinking of Daisy State Park in early June.

I have been reading a lot of posts of Arkansas and would like to do a DS ride there. As a matter of a fact I am just ready to ride, East Texas is good also.
I am thinking of going on Richards Adventure Quest ride on Memorial Day weekend, 23 - 24. http://www.texasadventure.net/AdventureQuest.htm
Or maybe the SLAP ride the weekend of May 29 -31. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=377958
Then I am going on a street bike ride with my club to Arkansas the first weekend in June.

i grew up in beaumont, been living in austin since 85. i know there used to be lots of good dirt roads in the angelina and sabine national forests. last time i rode those was in 03-04. no traffic and some pretty good side roads (trails). the power line right of ways are usually fenced off though...watch for cars on the blind curves they dont seem to be watching the road much.. good luck out there
