Moved away from Texas in 89 to the god forsaken pits of New Mexico. It's not even fun to visit much less spend 14 years there. Anyway, I'm moving to Midland next week and I heard about this board from zoom on HSN. You may be able to tell from the fact that I heard through HSN that I'm a sport biker, 00 CBR929RR Yellow/Black.
I'll ride with anyone on anything. I just love to ride. If anyone could tell me some nice roads in the Midland area that would be great. Yes, I know it's all wide open flat spaces with dirt and mesquite trees, but that's a step up from flat with dirt and tumbleweeds only.
Also, now that I'll be closer to Dallas I will probably visit there more often to see family. It was nice to find this board and hopefully I can get my Texas specific questions answered here. Thanks zoom.

Well, welcome home! I've never been to the Midland/Odessa area so I can't help you out with roads out there but if you head south.....mmmm Big Bend and the Davis mountains are a treat!
Welcome to the boards and glad you're back where all Texans belong, TEXAS! Woohoo!

Howdy,
:tab You can take the boy outta Texas but you can't take the Texas outta the boy! The hill country is not too far to the South of Midland. As far as rides close enough for just an hour or two of cruising... well, I hear that the Texas Sportbike Association is trying to get a chapter going in San Angelo. So apparently there are some local riders out there. Do a google search for TSBA and you should find something pretty quick.

We have a probationary chapter forming in San Angelo but I don't know any of the contact info for anyone out there. Go to the above link and then to the BBS and you should be able to find some info in there. Look in the statewide forum, I think there's a thread in there for the San Angelo guys.

Just how far south is this hill country you speak of? I'm not a big fan of just cruising around town, but I'm not saying you won't be able to catch me in town at any given time. I just prefer to take off and ride all day long. I find it to be more relaxing that way. Plus, hills sound fun. I haven't spent that much time trying to drag the pegs mainly because that's a bit of an extreme thing to try on a straight road.
On a personal not, I'm getting so stoked about getting back to Texas. The thing I've missed the most is the women. My god, they definitely put something in the water

Howdy,
:tab The Hill Country is usually thought of as being West of Austin all the way out to Rocksprings or farther, the Northern edge would be Us 190. This is obviously not a hard and fast definition, but it is where the majority of people ride. The popular towns for weekend bases are Fredericksburg and Kerrville.

Welcome to TWT!
So, did they return your Stetson and boots O.K. when you crossed back over the border? There's been some problems with mixing up the Tony Lamas and the Justins out at some of the checkpoints along the New Mexico DMZ. I hear it's a huge scandal with all sorts of heated accusations flying left and right.
I've only passed through that area a couple of times in my adult life, and don't remember noticing much but flat, straight roads. Maybe you could find a big empty parking lot and practice your stunting skillz?
Seriously, looking at my Roads of Texas map book, it appears that the closest place to find some curves might be due south about 80 miles around the towns of Iraan and Sheffield along the Pecos River near where it crosses I-10. And if you have a truck or trailer you could transport your 929 with (or a high tolerance for numb wrists and butt) you can head 175 miles southwest to Fort Davis and ride the mountain roads. Elliot's suggestion to hook up with the TSBA or other local riding group might be your best bet.

I'm also facing a *possible* move to Midland toward the end of the year. What checking I've done indicates that the only good roads relatively close are in the Big Bend area. They are spectacular roads. See the following links to some of the pictures I've taken in that area:

Also, if I'm not mistaken, you are a bit closer to the Texas Hill Country than those of us in Houston are. Here are some pics fo that area:
