Use this thread for posting shots previously taken, or current shots asking questions, or just talking about the assignment. We'll open up a different post a few days before the contest assignment ends for you to post your actual submission entry. Your submission entry can be something new or one you posted here, but the picture HAS to be taken between now and Monday May 4th midnight. A winner will be chosen sometime after midnight Monday and announced at that time. The winner will then post the next two week assignment topic and so forth.
The challenge this round is, Night. This challenge may be a little less open to interpretation, but should stretch your technical abilities. Photography is about light, and the play of light on the dark canvas of night can yield some amazing imagery. Ah, but cameras don't see like our eyes do, and therein lies the challenge. Sometimes we fight within the technical limitations and work to produce an image like what our eye sees, and other times we just open the shutter and move the camera around and see what we get. But then again, night can be interpreted or suggested in many different ways...

I think this will be a great assignment! Having ventured through my archives, I have one or two night pictures. This will force me to figure out the whole night/exposure thing.
So...... do you have any advice on how to approach night shots, specifically neon? :trust:

I just had a gallery exhibit that was night themed so I have this stuff handy. I think I like shooting at night better than anything else.

So...... do you have any advice on how to approach night shots, specifically neon? :trust:
.
First off, for most night shots you will want to use a tripod. Depending on your ISO setting and aperture, you could be looking at anywhere from 1/4 to several seconds on the exposure. The Imperial Sugar factory photo above was shot at ISO 200, f22 for 8 seconds. I chose a small aperture so that any pinpoints of light would have that nice startburst look to them.
As for neon, one of the keys is to not let the exposure go so long as to blow it out. If it's too overexposed, you will loose the richness of some of the colors. Remember, that all the darkness in the frame will make your meter want to give it more exposure to make the dark night a middle grey, thus completely blowing out the highlights. With modern digital cameras, it's a lot easier as you can manually bracket your shots and check the image right away in the LCD to see how things look. Just get out there, shoot some stuff, use a tripod, and experiment. Shooting at night really is fun.
Oh, one other thing: digital camera sensors don't always handle low-light/long exposures very well and will produce noise in the dark areas fo the image visible as specs that look a lot like film grain. Most digital SLRs, and some compact digital cameras as well, have a noise reduction setting. When you go out to do night shots, turn it on. In my Nikon, when I turn that on, it makes the exposure, then it makes another frame with the shutter closed for the same length of time as the first. It then compares the actual picture with the dark frame, and subtracts much of the sensor noise from the original. It works very well, but each exposure takes twice as long. So, in the example above with noise reduction turned on, the 8 second exposure took 16 seconds to complete. Be sure and turn it off when you finish. I made the mistake of leaving it on and it took me forever to figure out why I couldn't shoot any faster than one frame per second!

I'll usually shoot night stuff at the lowest iso possible to minimize the grain. It seems counter-intuitive, but it works. The exposure will be longer, but your already using a tripod in most cases.
That said only four of mine above were shot with a tripod. If you don't have a tripod get on one knee and put your elbow that's holding the camera on the other knee to steady it as much as possible. Or just set it on the ground, fence post, lean against a wall, whatever.
When you take the picture if you can do multiple frames do that. When you push the button that will make the camera move some giving you some blur. If you can just hold the button down and take multiple pictures the second or third will usually have less camera movement.

For these type of shots I use the lowest ISO I can (in the case of the Imperial Sugar photo, 200 is the lowest my D70 would go). Just to be safe, I also used the noise reduction setting. Most of the time, I shoot with a tripod at night.

I'm going to have to figure out how to turn the ISO down on the D40 :lol2:
From this (http://www.ehow.com/how_2323501_format-iso-nikon-d40.html) site
Manual Setting
Step2
Set your Nikon D40 shooting mode to P, S, A, or M (Programmed Auto, Shutter-Priority, Aperture-Priority, or Manual). When in Auto or Digital Vari-Program modes, the camera will automatically set the ISO for you, depending on available light, so you will not be able to manually set your ISO is these modes. If you would like to use Auto ISO in all modes, go to Section 2, try the Auto ISO on Your Nikon D40
Step3
Press the "Info" button, located just behind the shutter button. This will display shooting information on the LCD screen, such as shutter speed, aperture and ISO setting.
Step4
Press the "i" setting button, located to the left of the LCD screen on the bottom. The ISO setting on the display should be highlighted. It will be on the right side of the screen. If it is not highlighted, use your Multi-Selector arrow keys to highlight it.If it is grayed out and thus you cannot highlight it, you are in the wrong mode. Check your mode selector dial to ensure you are in P, S, A, or M modes.
Step5
Press "OK" on your Multi-Selector button. This will lead you to an ISO menu.
Step6
Use your Multi-Selector arrow keys to choose your ISO setting. You may set it to 200, 400, 800, 1600, or H1. H1 is equivalent to a 3200 ISO setting on your Nikon D40.
Step7
Press "OK" on the Multi-Selector button. You have now set your ISO film speed. Check the shooting display to ensure the proper ISO setting was selected, and shoot away.
Step8
To change the ISO speed again, repeat Steps 1 to 7. To return your ISO setting back to auto, change the shooting mode to Auto, or to a Digital Vari-Program such as Landscape or Portrait.
On my Canon I press two buttons at the same time and turn a dial...Just sayin.

Thought I would play some with "exposure".

I never understood how people captured these type of shots before. If someone else is like me, this is how I did it.
I chose f22 and a shutter speed of 6 seconds, with the camera on the tripod and using a remote release, I walked infront of the shot with a flash light. I still haven't quite got my head wrapped around why you don't see me in the shot... but I am learning to understand it.....

Very nice! I played with stuff like that on film 20 years ago. Another fun thing to do is zoom the lens during a long exposure, one with lots of lights in it. You can also put your flash on rear curtain sync and do the same thing. The flash will go off at the end of the exposure, freezing you with a trail of light behind you.

Poser ruined the third pic for me. :lol2:
Seriously, the third pic I would crop it to portrait orientation down to to sign and lobby area only. The rest is distracting to me.
Docs I thought turned out good. I'll agree the patio didn't do much except for the colors as you mentioned.
OK, let's try the cropping as you suggest.

so, what do YOU think of it cropped vs. uncropped? :trust:
I like it cropped. My flames in post 60 slipped back a page very fast! Is the brightened up image better than the original?

I like it cropped better. Cropping is something I really need to work on.

I like the enhanced flame color in the rework. Was that a hand-held shot? I think the flames could be more defined/vivid if frozen a tad bit more. Maybe a faster shutter speed to make that happen?
It was tripod in a gusty wind. Shutter was 1/100th, ISO 800 and aperture 5.6 with the lens zoomed to 300mm. Before the contest is done I may take some more trips and try to get closer. The long lens and windy night combined with the rain may have contributed to some issues. I was about 100 yards from the subject. I may have to go back before sunset to see if I can legally get closer!
This is fun!
edit... I see what you are saying. Even though I should be asleep by now,,, I am playing here...
I shot a few pictures at 1/200th, not many. The light meter was flashing that I was way out of range, but it is looking like under exposing works well for getting a black sky background. I'll give you three guesses where I will be tomorrow night!

Nice one, Mark. :thumb:
Ed, I still haven't seen the flame thingie - I assume you saw it off I820.
A couple of folks said it was an old landfill near Randol Mill (east side) near an RC flying field. I've ridden RM a bunch of times but never seen a land fill or RC field. Are they across the street from Temple CA?
It is further west from that one. The road name changes to East First before you get to it. The flume is south of the road, just east of the narrow bridge, but west of where it widens out near Oakland.

Gary,
What made the star holes from about the 3 to 7 o'clock position a different color? That's interesting how that happened. I assume that's an exterior garage light?
