Leaving for Tulsa tomorrow and never been before. May or may not be on the scooter. Anything I should see while I'm there or something between there and Ft Worth? Sat/Sun during day is booked but the nights are free as well as Fri night and Monday.

If you like BBQ, visit Famous Dave's (http://www.famousdaves.com/) at
8247 East 71st Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74133
It's really good :eat:

Grew up there, great town. Kinda like Oklahoma's version of Austin. I take 75 north if I'm in the car and 377 if I'm on the bike.
South Peoria ave. used to be OK. East 15th from Peoria used to be ok for night stuff, too. And out east on 11th near the University of Tulsa.
Minor league baseball at the fairgrounds.
Gilcrease museum out North weat Tulsa. If you go out there try to visit the Knotty Pine BBQ

Like BBQ? I own 2 bikes don't I!
I'll check the BBQ place out. I'll be somewhere on 66th St. so can't be too far? I like OKC so I should like Tulsa.
Taking the scooter if I can bolt a cooler and camp chair on it. Still gotta make room for clothes, camera, pistola, and some ammo (don't ask). Of course, the Burgy and topbox can swallow a lot of stuff.
If I go 377 from FtW to Tulsa, what is it time-wise? Google Map showed it to be like 320 miles but that was I35 up.

Up I-35 is about 5 Hrs. Up 377 to Ada and 1 [I think] up to Henryetta is @ 4 hrs, from Dallas.
Tulsa is an easy town to figure out....east / west streets are numbered 21st to 31st street is 1 mile
North / south streets are named after cities...cities east of the Mississippi river are on the east side and west Tulsa's are cities in the west. In alphabetic order.
So if you are gonna be in south Tulsa @ 66th you are approx. 7.5 miles south of downtown.
The Knotty Pine and the Gilcrease are north west at about 36th west ave.
So about 10- 12 miles. The expressway system in Tulsa almost works.I-44 maybe the worst.

 Ask around to the locals about BBQ, though. Famous Dave's is good but it's a chain joint you can find in any city. I usually find good BBQ just by hitting up locals for advice. Most people can't wait to tell you about their town. :)
The only exception to this was Kansas City... those guys need to come to Texas to see what BBQ is supposed to taste like.

Beautiful city, Sharkey. If you're a jogger and you have time, the trail along the river is without parallel in this part of the country (Tx/Ok) in my experience. If you're not a jogger, it's still a beautiful city. Good food, great hills and curves.

Unfortunately, Famous Daves is NOT in very many cities. El Paso, only, in Texas. sigh Dave's "Devil's Spit" is HOT! BBQ sauce.
Don't know if it's still open, but in Stillwater, OK there has been a GREAT local BBQ joint - Smokey Joe's. It was on 6th Street, also known as Hwy 51, located on the west end of town.

Sorry, I stand corrected, I thought they were in Houston and Austin as well. They are everywhere in Virginia though. They were popular with Marines for a "last meal" before leaving on deployment.
I do have a really weird story about being refused service at one.

Famous Dave's is OK at best...if you want some good BBQ, go to Wilson's BBQ (two locations in N. Tulsa, one in Broken Arrow).
If you're interested in motorcycle-related fun, there's a meet Friday nights at 8:30pm at the Sonic in Brookside (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=sonic+tulsa&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&ei=e9_xSfzbNoSGtgeH64y4Dw&sa=X&oi=local_group&resnum=4&ct=image).
Saturday nights they meet at the Starbucks just north of there at 8:00pm.
Monday evenings they meet at Freddy's Frozen Custard on 71st between Memorial and Mingo at around 6:30pm.
If you'd like to have some fun and make a half-day trip out of it, I can show you some fun roads that aren't too far out of Tulsa.

Duh, maybe I'll have to have BBQ 2 nites in a row? When I was in Memphis, I did just that at the same place it was that good.
Thanks TexTom, I took your route and it was very nice. I got lost 2X but I'm directionally challenged. Once in Tulsa, I felt like a steak and ate at Lone Star Steak (go figure). I liked going thru the small towns. Wind was a killer when I headed east.
Sadly, no pictures but it was quite therapeutic. As I rolled along listening to my MP3, I thought of a lot of things - my sick dog everytime I passed
a sleeping hound in a driveway, a good friend from down under I met at a similar school in Shawnee 15yrs ago, a book I keep saying I'm gonna write, and life in general.
I think I might even like OK more than TX :eek2: They seem to share my viewpoints more but maybe I'm just citified being born and now working in Dallas.

Well here's an update.
First off, BBQ. Asked the clerk at Econolodge of a good place for Q. She said she wasn't a fan but when she does, she goes to Wilson's. Seeing Wilson's recommended here, I made the 7mi trip down 11th St which is Historic US 66 route. Keep in mind, we had no lunch break so I was a bit hungry. :-P
Verdict: It was just OK. 2 sauce choices and they both missed. One was too sweet and the other was hot almost like Meskin hot sauce. Brisket was good but I like my sausage a bit more cooked. Fries were excellent but sweet tea was too sweet.
Spent all day at USSA for Rangemaster's Polite Society Match. Shoot house run thru was cool and we worked on the range practicing 1 hand shooting, loading, and stoppages. Rest of my day spent listening to 2 hour blocks from Ayoob and Farnam dealing w/ the legal aftermaths of a shooting and tips on running your AR.
Tommorow will be spent on some close contact fighting, running the AK, and an overwview of the Newhall CA incident. I'll be looking for another OK eatery as well.
These numbered streets are killin' me still.

I do agree that Wilson's sauces aren't quite up to par. I normally get chopped brisket and eat it without sauce...mmm mmm good stuff
The numbered street are easy! Just remember, numbered street run east/west and name street run north/south (this is NOT true for avenues..)
I'm sure you have a map or GPS, but I'll put up the named street in order from Left (west) to right (east)anyway : Riverside, Peoria, Lewis (1800 block), Harvard (3200 block), Yale (4900 block), Sheridan (6500 block), Memorial (8100 block), Mingo (9700 block), Garnett (11300 block), 129th/Olive (12900 block), 145th/Aspen (14500 block), 161st/Elm (16100 block).
For example, 8102 S. Memorial Dr. would be located at 81st and Memorial. 5502 S. 97th E. Ave would be on 55th street (Between 61st and 51st) at Mingo.
For breakfast go to Betty Anne's on Memorial at round 46th or so (east side of the road just south of the Lexus dealership). I get their two-egg meal with sausage, hash browns, and biscuit and gravy (this is mandatory).
