View Full Version : Texas Tag-O-Rama!

Rules are easy...
#1 - Find the tag and reproduce the photo (as best as possible). The first person to post a found tag gets to place the next tag. If you get a tag, but somebody else posts their picture first, you lose.
#2 - Take the tag to a new location, get the photo and post it here. Give a few hints so the next person can figure out where the tag is located. Try to place the tags in interesting locations, maybe a bit of history that can be found down some nice twisties.
#3 - Tag must be a) findable and b) not placed on a dirt road. Maintained gravel is OK, but make sure to let folks know that gravel is required to get to your tag. We don't want to exclude those who don't like to get dirty.
#4 - File photos are NOT permitted. You gotta ride to play this game.
#5 - The motorcycle in the picture must get to the tag location under its own power.
Now that the rules are taken care of, here is the first tag.

Irrelevant new B question - what's the policy for tagging previous tags?
jhansen
04-28-2009, 03:57 PM
As prosecutor, judge, and jury (I guess), tagging a previous tag shouldn't really happen but if you get a different view of said tag...well why not. The "Where am I (in Texas) has had that happen so.....
All that said, the idea is to get as close to the original picture as you can get. Once you have that, post it and you now have "the tag" for your location.
Make sense? On with the game.

Hmmmm....... Specs is having free beer tasting night or a run to this place? Hmmmmm..... Thinking....... and tomorrow I'm busy all day. This one should go fast.
EDIT:
For those wondering, you can't pull out a file photo of your bike on the current tag location. I've got a few I could post up previously taken of this same shot, but from what I understand from Jeff and the rules, the matching tag must be visisted AFTER the initial tag is posted., ie: no file photos previously taken. And then the new tag has to be done and not from a file photo. Is that how you understand it?
BeemerBob
05-06-2009, 07:04 PM
Yes, M38A1 – that is how I understand the rules as well. I would, however, like to ask Jhansen to modify the rules a bit. I too have a picture of my bike in from of this fine establishment and if I rode out there to take another one it would look EXACTLY like the one I already have and since a lot of us also play the “where am I”, we have seen a lot of each other’s file pictures. The next potential problem is that with the current rules, we may get stuck in a geographical area.
What makes this game unique as opposed to the “Where am I” is that it is not a mater of figuring it out or demonstrating our skill with google. My proposal Mr. Jhansen is that we simply have to prove we have been there by posting a picture of the “tag” with our bike. That would allow, for instance, M38A1 to post his picture and then he could post a picture for the next tag in east Texas and let those folks an opportunity to run with it. (I’m pretty confident that M38A1 has pictures in east Texas … south Texas, west Texas, etc.
It’s just a thought for your consideration. What da ya think Mr. JHensen? Your call.

I like the 'no file photos' rule. This way, the game keeps the wheels turning and us riding to far off places just because. Bob's idea is good, but wouldn't really be a "tag" game. More of a "hey, I've been there too" game. It would be fun but I think it would be better in a separate thread.

Yeah, I am going to keep the "no file photo" rule. Just to keep the tourism industry moving with in Texas. On a side note, while taking a picture of Rusk County Courthouse, I got to explain The Sheriff exactly what I was doing. He had the "Aha Moment" once the light bulb came on. Got some good references for good food too.
Never mind, my input is irrelevant now.

Yes it was pure luck. I actually didn't know exactly where the next tag would be, just the general location. Guess that's for jhansen to decide since he's the creator. My "vote" would be that they need to be posted at the same time keeping the game open and not allowing anyone to hold the game up. Both times I was riding out to the tag it was kind of neat to wonder if the other bikes I saw out that day were heading to get the tag as well.

Well, that's why I posted up the new one. A consideration regarding this is, seems like it'll be difficult to get it out of a geographic area unless someone is grabbing the current one, then makes a trip out of the area. Still fun chasing you Mr. Stingray.... :rider:

DRIFTWOOD, TEXAS. Driftwood, seventeen miles northwest of San Marcos in central Hays County, grew up in the 1880s as a supply center for neighboring ranches and farms. Pioneers settled in the area, then known as Liberty Hill, as early as 1850, but most settlers arrived in the early 1880s. The community grew rapidly in that decade, perhaps as a result of its access to the new rail terminals at Kyle and Buda. By 1890 Driftwood had a post office, a school, churches, a cotton gin, and a general store. From a low of ten in 1925, the population grew to nearly 100 during the middle years of the twentieth century, then dwindled to fewer than twenty-five by the 1970s. In 1945 Driftwood became part of the Buda school district. A century after its founding, the community remained a quiet Hill Country crossroads served by a general store and post office. In 1990 the population was twenty-one.
Approximately five miles back down FM1826 is the Salt Lick BBQ, recognized as one of the hill country's better eating establishments.

That might work if it was a "local" game but this one is set up as a Texas game. If both have to be posted at the same time you will limit the number of riders and locations available to post a tag. Just mho, like you said we will have to let Jeff decide.

No secret..... I've got on-line friends wherever I go!
Seriously, I shot the two pictures and called Brian when I got to Imperial Sugar. His office was only five minutes away so he gave me directions and the "Grand Tour" while I dumped the two images off the camera, resized, uploaded to photobucket and linked in the thread. Nothing crazy like carrying a laptop although that's in the works now. :trust:
Those that travel and post typically have their notebook type computer (read: small) with a wi-fi card or air-card that works off cell towers. As they travel they write trip reports in a word processor (spell-check) during the evening, dump the images off the camera to the notebook then start the same upload/link process. Presto! on-line current trip report

I am stuck this week end but the next one is open, if no one has grabbed it by then I will be on my way down.

So what do we need to search for??
well you did need to search for a old abandoned sugar plant. but it is a little late for that now! LOL Chuck had a good idea and I will probably go take a pic there as soon as I get up. it will give the Burleson mafia a chance to play if they are willing to come out of their nice cool homes. :lol2:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v495/leonhogan/photo-3.jpg
the picture is of the old Imperial Sugar plant in Sugar land west/ southwest of Houston.
imperial sugar traces it roots back to 1843 making it one of the oldest companies in Texas. unfortunately production of sugar at the sugarland plant ended May 2003 closing the book on 160 years of sugar refining in Texas.
the plant is largely abandoned and in dis-repair despite the company corporate offices still being there. I "borrowed" their wifi to upload the picture.
I will have the new tag up tomorrow afternoon.

The world-famous Broken Spoke in Austin. This time I got it fair and square.
This was an easy tag for me. Tomorrow I will go on a half-decent ride and photograph the New Tag.
About the Broken Spoke: If you live in Austin, and have young out-of state visitors, you have to take them to the Spoke. I wrote the following in a different thread:
I've lived in Austin for 36 years, but I can't dance, so I've only been to the Spoke twice. Both times to show clueless out-of-state guests what a real Texas honky tonk is like. Here's how one visit worked:
Go to the Spoke. An old biddy at the door is checking I.D.s. Show her mine, and I pass.
First friend gives her his I.D. The biddy looks at his I.D., then looks at him with a pained expression on her face, and bellows in a Texas drawl loud enough so that everyone nearby can hear, "Pennsylvania???!!!" Exact same thing happens with second friend, only this time she bellows "New Jersey???!!!"
I'm sure this is standard operating procedure with "foreigners" at the Spoke, and it was pretty funny.
Might add that this happened at least 20 years ago, at a time when Texas, and particularly Austin was quite xenophobic. It was common to see bumper stickers with slogans like "Keep Texas Beautiful. Put a Yankee on a Bus," or "Welcome To Texas. Now, Go Home."

The New Tag. The sign is the only clue needed. This place consistently makes Texas Monthly's Top Five BBQ.
http://www.handspiral.com/images/Diamond_Die/xlforum/2009/CityMarket/CM2.jpg
Inside. There were five cutters hovering over this chopping block. When I asked to take a pic, everyone scattered except for this poor guy who had nowhere to go. Actually, I think he is their designated photographee. I've seen him in pictures before.
http://www.handspiral.com/images/Diamond_Die/xlforum/2009/CityMarket/CM3.jpg
My meal. For some reason, all I had eaten all day was an apple and a bowl of black beans and rice, plus, I had run 6 miles around Lady Bird Lake in Austin, so by the time I got there just before closing at six, I was ready to faint, and could barely taste the food.
However, the brisket was good. The sauce was the sweetest I've ever had, but also very spicy and good. This place is particularly famous for its sausage. I never buy sausage at BBQ joints because I can just buy Elgin sausage at the local grocery. But, I gave this sausage a try to see what all the hoopla was about. It was very distinctive -- I think that I could identify it blindfolded -- and soft, moist and very good. I would never pass up the chance to get this sausage again.
BTW, my ride can't compare to M38A1's who wrote a great ride report of the Previous Tag here:

Here is DogBunny's Tag:

My Tag of his:
The City Market in Luling, TX, one of the top 5 BBQ joints in Texas according to Texas Monthly (2008). This was my first time there. The brisket and sausage were awesome. Putting sauce on BBQ in Central Texas is sacrilege. But I made an exception here. Their tangy, mustard-based sauce was great.
12112
The picture is not an exact match of DogBunny's, but I guess it is close enough. Parking was at a premium. I had to double park my bike and stand in the street to get the picture.
And the new Tag:

Before I included links to an album I had created on TWT. The pictures showed up in the post when I was logged in. But the pics were gone when I viewed the post when not logged in.
Are the pics there now?

My version.
Although I've passed by this hundreds of times, I couldn't remember where it was. I was sure it was on The Drag, so I tried there first. Then, I thought it was on the side of Cheapo Discs on North Lamar, and tried it. Next, I tried Sixth Street, Fifth Street, Fourth Street and South Congress. I finally gave up, and had to come home and Google it.
It's at Roadhouse Relics on South First at Annie Street.
I will post the new tag later today.

The new tag. This is my number 1 favorite BBQ place. Don't let the outside of the 100-year old building fool you -- the inside is worse! It made the top 50 in Texas Monthly's last BBQ round up, but honestly, it deserves better than that. It gets much better treatment from the SFA Southern BBQ Trail -- Google it.
http://www.handspiral.com/images/Diamond_Die/xlforum/2009/tag/taylor3.jpg
I would have loved to have left things with just that first picture, but no one would ever have found it, so here's a bonus tag. Again, I like the BBQ here WAY better than Taylor's more famous place.
http://www.handspiral.com/images/Diamond_Die/xlforum/2009/tag/taylor1.jpg
My order. This cost all of $3.30, and that included a half pitcher of tea. This is one of those rare BBQ places with waitress service, so with tip, I spent $5, still an amazing bargain. The people there are super friendly, and 85-year old Vencil Mare is still overseeing everything!

Yeah, I thought I had jinxed the thread. Please move the tag away from Austin so that I don't pick it up again and select another place that no one wants to go to...

So, you've discovered this forum too. Good to see you here.
This is the place we were supposed to eat at during the Flyrite open house trip -- that was the real point of that trip for me...
I love this place. Yes it's a bar, and a little scary-looking, but everyone inside is Texas-friendly. There was a Suburban-load of little kids that came in for a post- Pee-Wee League meal the last time I was there.

Take a look at angling over to Toll Road 130 in San Marcos. Looks like a jump-over of about 25 miles. I know that area, the roads are fast and it's kind of interesting scenery. You'll pay a toll, but you'll completely avoid Austin and Round Rock traffic.

130 goes all the way to San Marcos??? Google Maps says it doesn't start until just south of Austin near Bergstrom.

This will be too late for today, but you're right. I meant that you could start angling over towards it in San Marcos, and after what looks like 25 miles of fairly good back roads you'd be at 130. I don't know, maybe not a great plan, just an idea.

I'm planning on hitting it today after work. I got my clear visor packed so I can ride at night. Plan is to hit 21 out of San Marcos to 183, then to the toll road. Along the way there's a few Farm to Market roads so I can participate in the other riding game ;)

you failed to mention it was UNDER a bridge!! I went past it four times before I gave up and stopped and fought with my phone (ATT data network problems at that tower) till I got the map up and figured out it was under main street.
it is the Taylor Cafe located at 101 N. main street in Taylor Texas (under the bridge)
Vencil Mares was born on November 10, 1923. A native Texan, Mr. Mares returned home from WWII and went right into the barbecue business. He began in Elgin, Texas, at the Southside Market in 1948. It was there, working in the smoke pit, that Mares learned the secrets of the barbecue trade, including how to make his much acclaimed sausage. A year later, he purchased what is now Taylor Café in nearby Taylor, Texas, and has been the owner and operator of the establishment ever since. Taylor Café's hundred-year-old building is as distinctive as Vencil's ketchup-based barbecue sauce, complete with jukebox, mismatched bar stools, and an antique cash register. Though the Taylor Café has been housed in the same building since it opened, there have been a few changes. Some years ago, for example, Mr. Mares added turkey sausage to his menu. But Taylor Café is still, at its heart, the same barbecue joint that it was in 1948.

kinda vague clue but my first guess nailed it.
The system was first envisioned in the December 1983 National Reference Designs Study, which examined the technical and economic feasibility of a machine with the design capacity of 20 TeV per beam. After an extensive Department of Energy review during the mid-1980s, a site selection process began in 1987. The project was awarded to Texas in November 1988 and major construction began in 1991. Seventeen shafts were sunk and 23.5 km (14.6 mi) of tunnel were bored by late 1993.
ISS or SSC. ISS won.
I wonder if they keep the pumps on or have let the 14.6 miles of tunnel flood?

Yep, that's it. Not exactly photogenic, but a piece of geeky history. The pic's from the northwest side of the main building. There are a couple of boarded up windows on the east side, and some of the outbuildings have busted hasps on the doors. According to This site (http://www.damninteresting.com/americas-discarded-superconducting-supercollider), the tunnels are filling with water. One thing I noticed was that there are no wheelchair ramps on the sidewalks, which I suppose is because the Americans with Disabilities Act wasn't passed when the construction was cancelled. I also saw some empty BX cable, which means people have been stealing the copper inside.

I no sooner took my helmet off and the sheriff pulled up wanting to know what I was up to. I explained the game and that I was only taking pictures (camera in hand) and after checking my ID and writing down my info he said have nice day and was off. after he left a assortment of un marked vehicles would take turns watching me from a safe distance.
this tag was at the main office and research/ manufacturing complex for the SSC (Superconducting Super Collider) it is pretty much the same thing as the LHC they just finished in Europe except the SSC if it had been finished would have been much much bigger and way more powerful.
some say if it had been finished and turned on it would have left a smoking hole where the earth had been and the one in Europe will do the job.
wiki link for data http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superconducting_Super_Collider
link to my album of pictures from my visit including three from the linear accelerator site south of the main complex http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v495/leonhogan/SSC%20trip/?start=0
the linear accelerator is where it all gets started, they shoot the particle into a small ring where it is sped up and transfered to a bigger ring where it picks up more speed before being injected into the main huge ring.
the tunnel at the LAS is currently flooded, they had pumped it out and brought in a electrician to estimate cost of fixing pump but they had alot of rain and the tunnel leaks live a sieve and it quickly filled back in.
they did explore it before it filled back in and said everything that was down there during construction is still down there. still on its shipping pallets.

OK, so with a little poking around, this appears to be the old XIT ranch building that is/was in Channing, South of Dalhart.
However, after that poking around, I found an article that said it was moving to Lubbock. But the date of the story is way before the picture was taken, so the real question is, is this still in Channing or has it been moved to Lubbock.

It is still in Channing and the plan to move the old building have been put on the backburner. Some of the locals doubt it will ever be moved, but that's just gossip at the Cowgirl Cafe there in Channing. This article (http://www.lubbockonline.com/stories/092308/loc_335573401.shtml) was posted in Lubbock five months later.
So if anyone is planning to ride on up here in the spring or this summer I'm pretty sure that the building will still be at that spot on the corner of the street. If for some reason it does change locations I'll re-tag it before it moves and change the tag to another locale:thumb:
