Putting feelers out to see if anyone wants to ride at the forest. I'm not 100% but going to try & get a ride in Friday or Saturday. Would like to do some forest roads, but mostly trails. Anyone? :rider:

Thanks but that is a planned MX race weekend right now @ Lake Whitney. If anything changes I'll keep it in mind though.

I wish I could head out there this weekend but my inlaws are in town.

I'd say that's a reason to go.
The wife and I are going to a dynamo game that night, so this weekend is no good for me either.

You beat me to the punch on that one. :lol2:

Actually I have great inlaws. But it is fun to joke around.

When ya'll go riding at SHNF does your bike have to be street legal?

AFAIK you do not have to be street legal, as long as you stay off the roads.

however you do need an OHV sticker

Might be able to pull off early sat[think so]

See what I can do,anybody else.

Nothing like a 90deg day with 90% humidity in the forest:doh:

Ok I'm in and just to say the earlier the better.
Have to cut out by 12.

Ya'll skeered or what;-)

my buddy and i rode SHNF yesterday for the first time...

...we rode quite a bit of the east side, we had the whole side to our selves.

the trails were in gud shape(except for one or two deep mud bog) but wus suprised how tight it wus...didn't even get outta 2nd gear except on the fire roads...also the trails didn't seem to be marked very well.

a couple of questions...w/ the lack of trail markings it wud appear to be a bit dangerous with multipul ride groups on the weekends...i mean the the trail markings were almost non existant and wud make it easy to end up going the wrong direction on a trail...is this a problem on the weekends???

also we hit the east side because we heard it's a bit more difficult...wuts the west side like???

TIA,

:chug:

P.S. ...and yes it wus HOT but w/ frequent water breaks and cool downs it wus a great time!

not to highjack this ride thread BUT one more question...i had seen where someone had posted GPS tracks and waypoints for SHNF but i can't seem to find them...can someone point me in the right direction???

between the provided maps and lack of trail markings we did managed to get lost more the once...doh!

While I haven't riden SHNF yet, several of the videos I've seen have people regrouping where the trails splits, seemingly to help keep the group together.

The trails are marked but vague would be a good word to use.

At least you will come out of the wood sooner or later[if you don't run out of gas].

Always count on 2way traffic

Been riding here a long time and it's always been this way.

If they would label and mark intersections things would be much better.
Personally think the gps tracks are lame.

Sorry if I've offended anyone doing the work, done some myself.
I kinda like not knowing where I'm at:giveup:

See you about 8:00 in the morning Scott. Mike (o_matic) say's he's in, & will meet us there about 10:00. You'll have to take it easy on me so I have a little left for an afternoon ride with him. :rider: Which bike are you riding?
Mike & I will both be the green KLX-250's

huh...i think i'll stick to weekdays...we had the place to ourselves :thumb:

on the east side where we were yesterday there were countless blind 90 degree sand berm turns...i'm talk'n one right after another for miles...unless ur roll'n at walking speed i don't understand how there's not people "swap'n paint" every weekend ???

don't get me wrong we loved the place and will ride there often but i'm never gunna be the lead rider :trust:

have a great time and be safe...

:chug:

P.S. i always know where i'm at...even if that place is lost.

The ride went great yesterday. Thanks Scott (Greasemonkey), & Mike (o_matic) for joining me. No bike traffic on the trails @ all. We did come across a couple of nice ladies horseback riding. We were stopped taking a break & saw them coming so it wasn't an issue. We had a nice long conversation about sharing the trail & they said they have never had an issue with the motor bikes as their experience with them were always positive. That was good to here.
Scott,,,,Mike & I did a nice long afternoon loop on the north side & we both agreed that while the south loop was good you missed some perfect trails on the north side. They were not as whooped out with less deep sand. I ended up doing about 60 miles of trails & I'm feeling it today. Feels good to be a little sore. Really had to keep the fluids flowing in to keep from having any cramps or other heat issues though. I know I had to drink even if I didn't feel that thirsty.
I had a flat going home on my truck just as I got back on I 45. That was the only bummer for my day. Had a few close calls playing with the whoops on the trails but saved them all. Mike hit a root & sent him crashing off the trail. Nothing major though thankfully. Can't wait for the next ride. See ya!:rider:

That's the main reason I'm on a private lease. 2 way trails are not safe. But I guess it beats not having a place to ride unless you're the one that gets hurt.

At least we know to expect two way traffic out there. One problem with one way is, that many may think that it is safe to haul axx. But it doesn't mean someone else may not have seen the arrows or even be aware. Some would argue that bikes in general are not safe. Many would say that racing motocross is not safe. My mother would always tell me that she would pray for us to have a safe race. Of course I said thank you & please do. But while you're at it pray for us on that dangerous highway to & from. The point is we all enjoy our ride with a certain amount of risk & precautions.

Absolutely!

BTW, occasionally we have a new member that is confused. So yes it is a possible but not a guarantee.

And yes, life is dangerous for sure. As an older guy I realize that more everyday.
