View Full Version : Photo Assignment #5 - Liquid Motion
StarWatcher
05-05-2009, 10:30 PM
Use this thread for posting shots previously taken, or current shots asking questions, or just talking about the assignment. We'll open up a different post a few days before the contest assignment ends for you to post your actual submission entry. Your submission entry can be something new or one you posted here, but the picture HAS to be taken between now and Monday May 18th midnight. A winner will be chosen sometime after midnight Monday and announced at that time. The winner will then post the next two week assignment topic and so forth.
The assignment is to photograph a liquid in motion. Anything from a waterfall with soft flowing lines:
http://ns4.axsi.com/TWT/Liquid_in_Motion/waterfall.jpg
to a drop frozen in time:
http://ns4.axsi.com/TWT/Liquid_in_Motion/waterdrop.jpg
and anything in between.

If I interpret this right, you are looking for the 'liquid-like' effects of moving water, yes?

Wow, these are some great images!
TexasShadow, not just water but any liquid in motion will work; water, milk, honey, molassas, motor oil, .....
All, remember the time constraints for your official entry images ( not necessarily the images in this thread ). The image has to have been shot sometime between the time I posted last night and midnight May 18th.

Oil would be very interesting to photograph because of its inherent characteristics, especially viscosity. It refracts light very differently from water.

If you've been following the threads, there is a photo assignment that spans about 12-14 days or so. There are TWO threads associated with the assignment to include 1) the assignment topic posted by the previous assignments winner. In that assignment topical thread you can post work from any time period, past or present, ask for comment, critique, help etc. 2)the actual assignment ENTRY thread. This thread is opened up about 3 or 4 days prior to the midnight deadline. This is for you to post a single picture, taken in the specified time period for the assignment.
The current judge will evaluate and critique the ENTRY postings at which point the thread is open to comment. The winner from that will then post the next assignment topic and the process repeats.
FREAKING RULES!!!!!
I'm out of these things then.
No reason to bail because of the rules. This forces everyone to shoot the assignment in the specified period of time. Otherwise, folks could simply pull from their extensive photo archives that match the topic without so much as burning a pixel. So bear with us and I look forward to your entry on this one!

That would be Scott Hobbs from Tulsa OK. he rode that little 250 from Tulsa to Clayton loaded with everything but the kitchen sink on a bald knobby and then proceeded to show a few others riders how to ride a dirt bike. He's got skills. :rider:
And to toot my own horn, that photo is also in the front page rotation on advrider.com

This is not easy...... I burned a bunch-o-pixels today and this is about all that came out of it. I shot f/stops all over the place and shutter speeds from 1/15th to 1/250th. I tried under/over exposure. I think I'm going to have to try those moving scenic water/creek shots next. Problem is, all the creeks are dry around here!

Different trip, same falls, note the HUGE rock now laying across the pavement. It was about the size of a semi trailer. I saw another recent ride report with a pic of these falls and it looks like they have cleared away the stone. It was previously part of the overhang that made the falls. I would have hated to be there when it fell! :eek2:

:tab Different trip again, to same state
http://www.twtex.com/linkfiles/082104NorthCarolina/DSC02307.JPG
:tab There is actually a person standing to the right of the falls in the above pic, about mid way up the right side of the image. Follow the angled rock up from the water to the right, just at the end of the rock, look up a bit right at the edge of the woods. It is an adult male. There were signs everyone about how many people die each year from slipping on wet rocks near waterfalls
You can see him better in this image
