I took a couple of pics this past weekend using side light from a window. I really like using side light from a window to light a portrait.

Thank you for the compliment.
I have the entry level Canon XSi dslr that I got this past Christmas. It came in a kit with 2 lens (an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens). I've since added a Canon 50mm lens and a Tamron 18-270 lens.
The first two pics, the ones of my daughters, were shot with the Tamron lens. The 2nd two shots were with the 55-200 Canon lens.
I've been using a point-and-shoot Canon for several years now so I am still learning to use the new dslr. The biggest advantage of the dslr for me is being able to blur the background a lot more than I can with my point-and-shoot.

Side lighting is a great technique. That style provides great shadows and highlights all in the same shot. By having the subject turn their head into or away from the light source can dramatically change the picture too.
Nice shots.
....and I'm hungry for bbq now too. :eat:
