View Full Version : Did You See It This Morning?

I got to work about 3:30a this morning and started what turned into a 12+hour day.

BUT, there was a huge bonus this morning. About sunrise, I could see the sky was a deep purple and blue. In the time it took me to get my camera and get outside, it had turned into this:

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/6235/img1034v.jpg (http://img529.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1034v.jpg)

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/9885/img1036f.jpg (http://img33.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1036f.jpg)

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/449/img1037s.jpg (http://img12.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1037s.jpg)

The last one was one full stop under exposed.

The really cool part? While I was outside taking the pictures, I actually forgot I was at work. When I went back inside, I'd forgotten what it was I was doing before I went out to take the pictures.

If it weren't for the friggin' power lines running through the top of the shots, I'd consider getting one of them blown up for framing. :trust:

Some of the coolest shots are when the sun is below the horizon and reflecting off the base of the clouds in your view. This was one of those amazing examples you captured.

Now, about those power lines.......

Holy Batman! I didn't even see you'd removed them until I'd posted the stuff below! Hmmmmmmmmmmm

LoL.......yeah, the power lines. They have been the bane of many of my pictures of days past. Honestly, I don't even think I saw them this morning in my hurry to take the pictures. I can frame a shot, find a shot, take the shot and when I look at them later......see crud in the shot I didn't see at the time.

I've gotten better about checking the LCD screen on this P&S digital I'm using but this morning......yeah, I was lucky to have my eyes open at all. :lol2:

When I took the dog out early this morning I saw it. I could see the orange glow through the windows and knew I was going to see a good one.

See, I have this love/hate relationship with PS or any photo processing software. I remember a couple of years ago, Popular Photography awarded it's "Picture of the Year" to a shot that had been worked over with PS in a HUGE way. Several shots blended together, etc. That's not photography, it's computer aided art.

That being said, I can see where in instances like this, it can really take a shot that would be banished to the trash and make it into one that's really usable.

BTW, Thanks, M38A1. :thumb:

I hear where you're coming from. I'm finding I use PS for cleaning out flare and dead pixels/noise when that happens. Maybe a small tweak in sharpness and color boost. So for the most part, it's just housekeeping stuff. Your shot was sort of a challenge to myself to see what I could do with it. (and then you go and post a larger version and I pick the small one to work with )

That musta been one heckuva challenge. I posted and 6 minutes later you had it corrected. I wish all my problems could be solved in 6 minutes. :lol2:

I actually like the effect the power lines have on the picture. Especially in the first one.

Cropped though...to take the focus away from the parking lot :)

Gives it a better sense of the world, instead of just pretty colors. It kind of looks like computer generated fractal stuff, without the rest of the world in it. ;-)

Does cropping count as electronic tomfoolery?

According to the judge's first post:

The challenge is to photographically capture RED, whatever RED means to you. Also, for this contest, NO cropping or post-shot processing is allowed, other than to size the photo to display properly. So, a big part of this challenge is to frame the shot properly when shooting; get the most out of the aperture, speed, ISO, settings, etc. as best you can to get your photo to shout RED!

Some would say 6 minutes is way too quick! :trust:

Given enough time and money we can do anything. OPS, skip the time, just increase the money. No problem!!:lol2:
