View Full Version : June 2009 Pie Run Camping
The June 2009 Pie Run is going to be taking us to Marble Falls, TX.
Check out the Pie Run Thread (http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40390) for more info on the Pie Run itself.
It has been awhile since I've made a TWT event and decided this is a great one to attend (minus the blistering heat that we'll be riding in). Since it is a bit of a haul from Houston, I, along with STrider, have decided to camp. Kurt has suggested Ink's Lake State Park so that is where we'll go. If it isn't the best camping experience you've ever had, blame Kurt :trust:
I have 2 campsites reserved (max of 8 people per site for a total of 16). These were the last 2 available sites & have water only hookup, no electricity. I think they'll support a small trailer / popup if anyone is interested in dragging one up there.
I also plan on cooking at the camp site if there is a camp grill of some sort & the weather is good.
So, who is up for a bit of camping & maybe some campfire cooking?

I might be a maybe if you're talking about staying Saturday night too. I won't be able to head out until Saturday morning but after that ride out in the heat I'll want to spend the night locally.

I'm interested in camping one night, even though I'm in Austin. I picked up a new sleeping pad I want to test, plus a Jetboil.
I just snagged the last 2 camping sites at Ink's Lake for Friday night....

NICE!
IIRC - they DO have camp grills, lantern hooks, picnic tables, and fire rings. And LOTS of deer. But no fish.
Now, I've got to figure out how to load the bike for it's first un-truck-supported camping trip.

Sorry Rebecca, I'm only down for a Friday night camp.
Realistically, you could hit the slab after work and make it to camp before bed time.
I'm sure someone would probably volunteer to set up a tent for you if that was the case.

Okay... I just made an appointment with Andy @ Metric Cycles to swap out the rear tire & replace the fork seals on the Uly so I'd be down for a bike swap. I took a closer look at my rear tire & got a little scared.... Needless to say I took the Jeep to work today!
Gee, I wonder what happened to those fork seals? Hmmm....

I would like to join in. Perhaps my brother. Since you have the last two campsites, will there be room for two more tents. Does the park have rules about how many tents per site?
I think the rules are 4 people per site, but these are pretty big campsites from what I understand, but I don't really think it will be a problem if we end up with more people.
Assuming that everyone will be packing a small, bike friendly 2 or 3 man tent we should be fine. It isn't like we are going to be setting up 8 HUGE tents.
EDIT - We can have up to 8 people per site, for a total of 16!

You got two in the 300's area, right? I remember looking at the online reservation site and that was were they had some left. As I remember the actual spot you get is assigned when you get there, so getting there earlier in the day will increase the chances that both spots are together and good ones.
When do you think you will get there? I probably won't get away from the house until 3:30 or 4pm, but would be there within an hour of heading out.

OK... Right now I am fairly certain that I will be there.
Do I need to go online and reserve a spot, or can I pitch my portable condo 12 man tent (read small alleged 2 man tent - REI half dome) in one of your spots Steve?
WoodButcher

I think Steve got the last two sites for Friday night and as I remember from looking at the online stuff, Saturday there were no vacancies. So, yes you will pitch the tent with the group. I'll be in the same type of tent as you are.
Now, I've got to figure out how to load the bike for it's first un-truck-supported camping trip.
If you have a waterproof duffle bag / dry bag you can toss your camping gear in there and set that on your pillion seat. I stole that idea from Duke and have used it successfully a few times now.

Hmmm....
Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad (optional, but nice), lantern/flashlight/headlamp
Other than that, hygiene items, a towel or two, camp shoes (ie flip-flops / crocs), spare clothes...
I don't pack a pillow. I use extra clothes in my sleeping pad stuff sack.
We'll probably be cooking at the site (grilling burgers/dogs/chicken for dinner, eggs & bacon for breakfast).

Don't spend much money on a tent. All you need is basic shelter (it never rains anyway). Walmart tents are fine. You need something that will pack small. You want at least a 2 person tent. Only a very very small person could fit in a one person tent. Generaly you need a tent rated for at least one more than the number of people to sleep in it. 2 people need a 3 peson tent, etc. If it's not too big, a talller dome tent is nice because it allows you to sit insite and change. Hard to change laying down.
A Pad is more than nice. It's like saying air cond in Texas is nice. YOU NEED TO GET A NICE PAD. Expect to pay some money ($70 +) for a good pad.

About two days before we should PM some cell phone numbers so we can find each other at the campground. I have a TWT banner that I will put up when I get there.
Since Nutt has the reservations, he'll have to pay and we can settle up when we get there. The rest of us will still have to pay a park entrance fee though. Unless you have a State Park pass (mine expired in April).
If you come in Park Rd 4 from 281 (heading west) keep an eye out for deer. I've seen some biguns along that stretch. Coming in from 29 there seems to be a little more traffic because of the golf course and I haven't seen as many.
For Stacie, when it's hot like this I bring a twin sized sheet along to lay on. That way you don't stick to the surface of the sleeping bag as much. :eek2:
I've added a few to the list. We still have room for 8 or 9 more.

Both sites have already been paid in full.
I'm planning on getting there early enough in the day to sign in for a couple of adjoining spots so we should be good.
Woo Hoo! Motorcycle Camping!!!!
Okay... got that out of my system...
I agree with Rusty in that we need to swap some phone numbers a few days before the event.

The 300 area is to your left after you get past the ranger station.
Steve, when you check in, avoid the area of 319-328 if they offer them to you. The kids playground is in the middle of that loop as I remember. The 310, 311 and 314 area is very good, as is 346-349. They are big, on the outside of the loops and close to the water.

I just snagged the last campsite at Garner State Park (near Leakey). After having pie, my brother (Devine Rider) and I figured since we already had our camping stuff, we would head to Garner SP so that we could ride the twisted sisters and some off-pavement roads in the area. There is room for two more to join us at are site if anyone is interested.
EDIT: Garner SP is for Sat. Night.

Not sure yet. I'm going to work some extra hours earlier in the week so I'll be able to leave a little early, but I don't think before 2pm. I know some backroads to take out there though just to make it interesting.
As far as the cast iron frying pan, I have a round griddle but it doesn't have much of a lip. Good for pancakes, okay for bacon, but can't handle much in the way of liquids.

A few weeks ago I fit a styrofoam cooler in my R pannier for the day at Oak Hill with amazing success. Without some insulation it would have been too hot for more than an hour in the sun. I'd recommend it.
One of my favorite moments was watching another spectator as he watched me pull an icy bottle of water out of my aluminum pannier. If he'd asked I was going to tell him the BMWs are equipped with a refridgeration system. :-P

I did some surgery on a styrofoam cooler so it would fit. Glad to hear you had good success with your attempt, I have not tried it yet. I have used a small 'bag' cooler before, but to be honest I was not happy with how well it performed.

Yes, I'm going to pick up some charcoal & magic fire water (ie, lighter fluid), and, if allowed, some wood for the fire pit after I get up there.
For dinner Friday, I was just planning on grilling up some burgers/dogs & going with that. Breakfast Saturday will be sausage/eggs/tortillas, ie migas.
If I'm not the only one bringing food there is going to be plenty to go around.
Be sure to hydrate tonight / tomorrow morning! I've been riding to work all week (140 miles round trip) & that heat about wore me out yesterday on the way home as I didn't hydrate well enough for it.
I'm rocking 2 100 oz Camelbak bladders tomorrow for sure!

Nutt:
What time do you plan on arriving? I’m off Friday (truth is I am always off) and can meet you there to help secure campsite, make runs to grocery store, etc. I would guess that since the sites are in your name there is nothing I can do until you get there, but if so, let me know and I can get there anytime.
While we do want to stay away from playground area, etc., if possible we need to try and be in site of overflow parking. We are probably OK on number of people per site, but the rules are a max of 2 vehicles per site. A motorcycle counts as a full vehicle so we are in far excess of that limit and some may have to park elsewhere.
So… Just let me know what time you plan to be there and if there is anything I can do to assist prior to that.
My plan is to arrive before 4:00 pm. I'm not sure of my route yet, but will plan my start time accordingly.
Feel free to give me a call to check my progress during the day.
I hadn't really thought too much about parking yet. I figured if we line the bikes up neatly into a car size spot they won't say too much. Can anyone confirm this?
BeemerBob
06-25-2009, 08:32 AM
I checked at another state park and they told me that they enforce the two vehicles per site rule and that a motorcycle is a vehicle. Like a lot of things, it depends if Inks Lake park rangers enforce the rules. We need to be prepared to move some bikes, just in case.
PM me your phone number
Anything I can do to assist prior?
WoodButcher
06-25-2009, 09:11 AM
Depending what spots we end up with, there are some other parkings areas on the loops with the sites. Shouldn't be tough to unload and then move the bike 30 yards or so.

Want to launch from my place around 2? Maybe 2:30? I've got to work up until close to time to leave, but will have the bike packed and ready to go. That way we don't have to meet somewhere else and potential wait there too. I think I'm on the way for you, right?

Yup, your on the way. I can be at your place about 2:30. Gives me some time to get some last minute stuff and pack the bike. I won't get back to Austin til midnight tonight.
I guess its just us from Austin for camping.
See you then.

As hot as it is, 2:30 is probably better than 2. I just want to get there around when Steve does. Backroads (no dirt) to Burnet? Blizzard at the DQ, then the run into the park. How's that sound?

That sounds just ducky. Mmmmm, Blizzard. Do you have a route planed?
I'm thinking of getting an even earlier start and trying to make it there before 2.
Anything to beat the heat!

When you know your eta, post up and I will try to get there at the same time.

Watch out for the deer. They were thick in the spring.
I'm leaving Houston at 10 & should be at Ink's Lake by about 2:00 pm.
I'll be taking the direct route (ie, 290) so if you see a Uly on the side of the road at a Holiday Inn, I'll be in the pool cooling off for a few minutes

It does get spooky with all the "eyes" looking at you from the fence line...

Well, if we actually leave my place by 2:30pm, then I'd say 3:15pm, but knowing how things really work I'd say 3:30pm is a better target. If I remember correctly it is south of 29 on 281. West side of the road.

Be careful everybody - hydration going there. Easy on the ethanol once you get there.
I'll definitely be taking a shower right before I hit the rack tonight. http://www.clipartof.com/images/emoticons/xsmall2/1222_hot_and_sweating_smiley.gif

+1. Big thanks to Nutt, Woodbutcher and anyone else involved in securing and organizing. Although conditions weren't great it was a good time.

Don't give me any credit other than the backroad route from Burnet to MF. I was just along for the fun up to that point. Nutt and BikerBob did the campsite and food work.
I had fun guys, thanks!
Also, don't give me too much credit. I called & made a reservation for a couple of campsites, that is pretty much it.
I will take all the credit for cooking a mighty fine meal though :eat:

I too want to thank everyone for a good time. The drinks were cold and the food was good and hot. But not as hot as the inside of my tent. I need a fan for camping like that.
