I had an idea for an "old building" thread when riding out west a couple of weeks ago.
Please post up your best images of Deserted, Abandoned or Dilapidated buildings.
I start it off with these...

Thanks, 'Dancer Texas Population 81' is a terrific movie, filmed in and around Fort Davis. No robots, no torture, no murders, no naked ladies (ok, you can't have everything). Just a really fun look at life in a small Texas town.

See here's the problem, I have an old 54 chevy I am going to restore so I need the parts, and I'm just itching to see if the old dozer can be brought to life again.
I really appreciate everyone who takes these pics and posts them, I hope to be able to see the scenes in person someday.
Any abandoned buiilding makes me sad. They represent someones dreams. They put their blood and sweat in it. Did they stay and die there, are they buried somewhere, maybe in an unmarked grave? Did they give it up and leave? Were they able to get past it or did they die in their spirit when their dream died? Were they able to rise up and try again?
Or maybe it's just an old building............................

Most all those places in Texas were in their heyday in the 50's before the Interstates. Sometimes I try to imagine what it was like the first day the store owner opened the door for business--all those hopes and dreams.

If your leaving Sterling City headed to Garden City/Midland just as you leave town look left and you can barely see the roof of the House.
At one time I intended to publish a calender and name it Texas Treasures and each month would have a pic of an old abandoned car and it location, it just never happened.

Brownwood, Tx. This is Deckers garage. It was my Dads first job (thats him in the pic). He was 14 at the time, I believe that would be 1941-42. He worked there with his Dad (who died before I was born). I like the old buildings but to find one that you have a connection to is real cool.

This one brings back some memories. I spent a few years in Denison, there used to be an old farmer that lived just across that bridge that would sell beer out of his barn after hours. Of course it was 3.2 beer, but better than nothing with you ran out after 2am....

I found this a few weeks ago. There's something spooky about old buildings sometimes, and old churches in particular:

I have to ask, how do you get that effect? Is it a filter or photoshop effect?
Looks like so Photomatix tonemapping was involved, to me, with some other mods in Photoshop.

What a great, great thread on a fascinating subject. Like so many others, when seeing abandoned homes and such I've wondered what the stories are.
How about an abandoned airport within spitting distance of dowtown Austin?

That's the old Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, right? Was it closed when Berstrom AFB closed and was converted into the international airport?

Correct. It closed in 1999 when the new airport opened. The new airport is located at the old Bergstrom Air Force Base that closed a couple of years earlier.
Old Mueller is about 1/3 of the way built out as a new mixed use development starting at I-35 and progressing eastward. They plan on using the old tower as part of a park or community center for the residents there.

Funny story about Mueller. When I was travelling a lot, I flew in to Mueller on one evening and the next morning flew out of Bergstrom.

I was working the night it switched. The convoy of airport specific equipment down Airport Blvd. was impressive. They wouldn't let me ride the in the luggage carts. :lol2:

Very interesting building in that little town. :thumb:
I drove past it recently on my way to Capulin Volcano but didn't stop for a shot.

When I see those old wooden buildings the first thing that comes to mind is "I wonder how much salvageable old growth lumber is in there"?

It was definitely worth the 10 min stop to poke around and look in the windows and such.
I spent a couple of weekends at Bergstrom during the late 90s and went by there a few years ago hoping to see if I recognized anything. I couldn't, and I later learned that much of the base--including most buildings, trees, and structures--were completely demolished.
A few exceptions were 12AF headquarters (converted into a hotel) and the original runway, which was refurbished for commercial use.
All I could really remember was the heavy wooden furniture in the Visiting Officers Quarters...

A far cry from how Mueller looked during its heyday in the 1950s:

found this in downtown Ballinger, I wonder what the door was originally, it is heavy steel, maybe a vault or something.
