It's really like that, right?

Quick story: I'd often roll into Sta. 2 in GP in the afternoon. Guys in their recliner watching the big screen and talking about what is for dinner. "Hey, you'll have a run today"? "Nah".

It was then that I knew that I chose the wrong profession!

Hey thats cool.
I was a member in Locust Valley; still have an association with the department, just not required to respond to calls.
My Pops has 54 years of service, still very active, he claims hes gonna stop driving the ladder truck next year, says its for the younger guys.

They made my step-dad stop driving after he kept hitting cars in Brooklyn. At first they'd send him to driving schools, but after that didn't "take" they relegated him to other things. Now he's mostly supervisor/training duties because he's nearing retirement.

They still exist. They run out of one station on east 969 and one off of City Park Rd. They have little pockets of territory all over norhtwest TC but those are all covered by AFD through contract deals. I don't know why the area between City Park Rd and hasn't been annexed yet. Must be some powerful politics at play in that neighborhood.

Yeah, lots of lawyers in this neighborhood...if city would ever provide us water service, we'd be more amienable (SP?) to anexation...I put in 25+ years with TCFC (Co.6) beginning in '82 so probably ran into you from time to time Kurt. Things changed a lot when they went to mostly paid, tax supported (ESD #4) department. They're now pretty much dependant on mutual aid with AFD and staff of certified but way underpaid full-timers. My brother Billy (retired AFD) and his wife still respond for EMS calls in neighborhood and Emma Long Park. BTW I designed and installed the lawn sprinkler systems at both these stations back in the day. Wonder if they still work? --Lee

Who knew? :-P Company 4's area along 183 and out Anderson Mill Rd. were where I ran. Mostly out of the stations on Melrose Trail and Pickfair. All squarely within the COA now.

I used to still occasionally run into Bob and Sue Hoskins out in Volente.

I've worked with Billy many time over the years. Volunteered and worked for P'ville part time while working for Austin. One memorable incident was a task force we took from Travis County all the way up to Albany. I was the officer on the brush truck from P'ville, Billy was the task force supervisor with trucks from 7 of the Travis fire districts. Ran with Billy in the area of City Park from AFD Sta.31 when I worked there as an LT. Tell him hello for me.

I agree that it effects all of us, and I have plenty of opinions on the matter. But I like to leave it at work. Always seems like humans like to divide ourselves into smaller and smaller exclusive groups. Volunteer vs. Career, City vs. County, Sportbike vs. Cruiser.

I came here to ride, and found people who like to do the same.

Volunteer firefighter - Malongo Fire Brigade, Malongo Camp in Cabinda, Angola.

Totally cool experience but I don't begin to hold what we did to the pros here in civilization. We learned how to provide a water wall to advance behind to get to an isolation valve, contain brush fires, manually activate the standing monitors around our oilfield and keep water on non involved vessels to keep 'em cool. No entering burning buildings or climbing ladders or anything like that.

I did achieve a childhood dream of driving a firetruck though!

Dave.

I worked for the Spring Branch Fire Dept. in 1973 but got canned in a reorganization (while I was still in in-house training). The chief who was training me got demoted and ended up as the Chief in the (then new) department in the Woodlands.

Port Arthur is a city stricken with poverty. I don't remember the current unemployment rate, but it's crazy. The worst thing is there IS WORK to be found now. Well, we could start in high school because most of the working age men worked out of town. (So I'm old, but not THAT old)

And there were no paramedics anywhere in Texas, if memory serves. Houston got the first paramedics under District Chief "Whitey" Martin back in the early 1970s.

At the time I was involved, Red Cross Basic and Advanced First Aid were about it for training in Texas. No EMTs, no paramedics, and little equipment except first aid stuff and oxygen.

We have come a LONG way, thank God.

We went out to eat with Medic 21 and went to one of the local restaurants. The engine crew ordered first, and they offered us a discount. The paramedics got up to the counter and the boy behind it shouted back to his manager, "I know we give a discount to police and fire, but what about the ambulance drivers?" :lol2:

I took my time climbing up the EMS ladder...about 5 years. And all along the journey, I was forever correcting people & attempting to educate them! When I joined the fire department & told my Mom I was gonna work to be a paramedic, she said "you mean like those guys that drive the body car from the funeral home & take sick people to the hospital?" I'm aware that that is EXACTLY where ambulances first originated, but GEEZ! C'mon!

Got promoted to Operator in 2005... best job in the fire service, hands down! ;) Now my current officers are hinting that they'd REALLY like to see me study and promote to LT. (hmmmm)

Anyone go to the Texas Firefighter Olympics this year? A few guys from my shift and I typically go to shoot in sport clays, but with it being in San Angelo this year, I decided to pass.

Next year, it looks like it's going to be in Lewisville. Definitely more centralized for everyone. I know it's a nearly a year away, but if anyone plans on going... post up, we'll meet up at the host hotel for some free beer, and a few rounds of darts.

4 years vol. 30 years career. Don't believe what you see on TV. The brotherhood is strong but not crazy and not lazy. If you think we just just sit around and watch TV you are wrong. Every day we train, do public education, do fund raising for charities such as MDA and yes we make calls where at that moment in time someone is having their worst day ever and they look to us to help them. Sorry for the soap box.

Former Vol FF for Groveton VFD, Former Vol EMT-B for Groveton & Trinity, paid EMT for Houston ambulance service in the 90's. I was only the 2nd or 3rd female to be FF & EMT for GVFD.

Lee, I didn't realize that you were on the ambulance in SL while we were in school. Gosh, that was a while back!!!
