If all else fails... use a shoe lace.
I know it is too late for Stacie's trip but saw this on ADV Rider (Post #130) and thought it was a neat idea. May try it out.

The one I've liked best has been the one that came with my USB flash stick from PNY. It has a strong but thin part that goes through the "keeper" on the camera, but the cord itself is thick like a shoelace and soft. Between the two is a small snap-together so I don't have to worry about getting the cord off over my helmet, I can just detatch it. Also helps to detatch it when you want to put the camera in your back pocket and not have a tail while you walk around.
