3rd Annual MexTrek Adventure Ride

Oct 14 - 17, 2009

Galeana, Nuevo Leon, Mexico
(the Sierra Leon region)

The Sierra Leon region (named by intrepid explorer Milton Otto) is a fantastic dual sport playground containing twisty mountain roads, a seemingly uncountable number of class 1 through class 4 unpaved roads, beautiful mountain vistas, pine forests, desert highlands, and unbelievable mountain passes. I suggest that the dual sport adventure riding here is as good as that in the Copper Canyon region. Not only is it a great riding area, but it isn't particularly far away either. In fact, for many Texas riders it is essentially in their backyards (a 1 day ride). So, in short, don't miss the 3rd annual Mextrek adventure ride. It's the best adventure ride all year.

Registration is open - Registration is $35. All registered riders will receive a 48 page, spiral bound MexTrek ride guide, three 11x17 topographical maps, GPS route downloads, and a commemorative t-shirt. Download the registration form here (http://texasadventure.net/Mextrek/2009%20MexTrek%20Registration%20Form.pdf), complete it and get it in the mail to me. To download - click on the above link and then save the form to your computer.

Registration ends Wednesday, Sep 30, 2009. Registrations must be postmarked on or before Sep 30, 2009 to ensure sufficient time to receive and process your registration and then mail your Ride Guide and maps to you. Registrations postmarked after Sep 30th likely won’t receive their Ride Guide and maps prior to leaving for Galeana.

If you miss registration, you can still attend. Just catch up with me in Galeana and I'll get you signed up. I'm bring some extra ride guides, maps, and t-shirts but make no guarantee that any or all these items will be available if you wait to register. Your best bet is to get registered by the deadline, but, hey, sometimes things happen.

Itinerary

Dates: Wednesday, Oct 14, 2009 – Saturday, Oct 17, 2009

Organization: MexTrek begins at ride headquarters 7 p.m. local time Wednesday, Oct 15th. Wednesday evening is for meeting other riders, organizing into ride teams, and selecting and planning the next day’s route.

On Thursday and Friday each team will ride their selected routes. Upon completion of the day’s ride riders will likely adjourn to a local establishment for food, drinks, and war stories.

MexTrek officially ends Saturday morning but Saturday can also be an extra riding day for anyone who didn't get enough on Wed - Fri.

Ride Headquarters:
Hotel Magdelana
Intersection of 5 de Mayo & 15 de Mayo streets
Galeana, Nuevo Leon, Mexico (town of Galeana, state of Nuevo Leon)
Hotel Magdalena: telephone 826-213-0106 (if dialing from the USA dial 011 52 826 213 0106)

The other hotel in Galeana, in case the ride headquarters hotel is full:
Hotel Jardin: telephone 826-213-0420 (if dialing from the USA dial 011 52 826 213 0420)

FAQs

Wednesday through Saturday? What's up with that? My logic for selecting Wed as the start day and Sat as the end day is to facilitate travel from and to home. Most Texas riders can leave on Tuesday after work and get to or very near the Texas - Mexico border on Tuesday evening. They can then easily make it to Galeana on Wednesday and likely get in some good riding along the way. On Saturday, riders can simply reverse this - have a great dual sport ride on Saturday and end up at, or across, the border Sat evening, then get home at a decent time on Sunday.

What should I ride? There is an abundance of riding opportunities in this part of Mexico. A variety of different routes of varying terrain and difficulty are available to choose from so any adventure or dual sport bike will be fine. If you have a limited fuel range, strap a 1-2 gallon gas can on your bike and you will be okay.

Is it safe? Most riders have heard the stories about the drug wars going on in Mexico so the question i get asked most often is whether it is safe to travel/ride in Mexico. Yes, I think it is safe to ride in Mexico if you follow some basic safety guidelines such as don't ride at night, don't buy/sell drugs, or don't go out drinking at night in a border town by yourself. If you observe the same safety guidelines you would follow anywhere, you will most likely not have any issues.

What's the best route to get to Galeana? You can cross into Mexico at a number of places, but for most riders I recommend McAllen. It's less touristy and makes for the shortest ride to Galeana. A group of riders will be meeting at the Motel 6 in McAllen on Wednesday morning to ride to Galeana together.

Can I team up with other riders for the ride to Galeana? If you have never been to Mexico, are unsure of crossing the border by yourself, or just want to ride to Galeana with a group then here's the ticket. There will be a group ride from McAllen to Galeana starting on Wednesday morning Oct 14th. All riders are invited to meet in the parking lot of the Motel 6 in McAllen at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning Oct 14th with their border crossing paperwork already completed for a group ride to Galeana. Riders will organize into groups of 4-10 riders, select a ride leader for each group, and then each group will ride together across the border and on to Galeana.

By the way - get your border crossing paperwork done before Wednesday morning. The groups will cross the border and keep on trucking. The groups won't be waiting for anyone who hasn't done their border paperwork.

Where to leave your truck/trailer in McAllen: If you trailered/trucked to McAllen and are riding from there to Galeana you can leave your truck/trailer in long term parking at the McAllen airport. The cost is reasonable and your vehicle should be reasonably safe.

Pig Trail and I will be leading a dirt ride down to Real De Catorce from Galeana. We will only share the routes with folks who attend and will transfer the tracks to your GPS from my laptop.

This will actually be October 9th-17th. The plan is to get down into Mexico before the official Mex Trek ride, do the ride to Real, which is a good day and a half, and that includes probable flat tires. :trust: And then returning in time to hook up with the Mex-Trek group on the 14-17th.

If you are interested in getting an idea of the route, take a look at the link in my signature.

If you are interested in going with us, please send Pig-Trail or myself a PM or email to discuss details.

I think I already know the answer to this but I will ask anyway. Are there any problems with us Okies tagging along? I figure I'd ask if some of my buddies would like a Mexican trail this fall.

AWESOME! I'm in, for Real de Catorce and Galeana, unless disaster strikes. Vacation is cleared at work. Time off cleared with spouse. I've been dreaming about this trip since reading all the ride reports last year, and visiting Real and Monterrey area by car. I sold all my street bikes and went dirt bike crazy. Can't wait! Cheers to everyone who helps put this event on.

Mad Sparrow,

I'm not sure who your question is addressed to. Are you asking if it's okay for some Okies to attend MexTrek or are you asking TerraXpeditions if it's okay to ride with him to Real de Catorce.

In case you are asking about attending MexTrek, the answer is Yes. My events are open to all riders, no matter what state they are from.

Come on down - the riding is phenomenal.

And to clear my end up, folks from any state may join us, but we are only trying to keep our group small. We are inviting a few others along, so its kind of first come first serve. Sure, we'll share the routes with those interested in going during that week, but once we get our number (undecided # of folks) we'd prefer to travel only in that group. It makes the traveling faster, safer, and easier for the bunch of us. Its a good chunk of serious offroad riding too, by the way.

Thanks for the link. All, please be wise about the purchase of this permit and the timing. If, for any reason, you do not have the bike attached to the permit inspected and cleared for entry back into the US, at the US / Mexico border within your visa's time period (6 months in most cases) you CAN NEVER TAKE ANOTHER VEHICLE INTO MEXICO AS LONG AS YOU LIVE. And when you do decide to travel there as a tourist, there is always a chance you will be asked to stand trial for your "illegal importation" of your vehicle, even if it never left your garage.

So be cautious. Don't sign up for a bike you may sell, or if you may not make the trip, unless a day ride to the border and back sounds like fun to you. Besides, if you get the permit late in the evening on a Tuesday, when you get your visa, it only adds ten minutes or so.

FWIW, my brother recently drove from San Antonio to Nuevo Laredo and back and sat at the border for hours to cancel a permit after his vacation plans changed.

I'm interested in going. Never been on a long dual sport ride but have ridden dirt bikes for years. How many hours a day is the riding, where would we stay (is this camping) and do you have a suggested gear list? Do you need to have a current US street tagged bike for this ride? I have one (a big KTM) but was wondering if my lighter but non tagged 250 2-smoke enduro would be a better choice?

They wont let you back into Texas at the border crossing with it... they asked me if my bike was street legal and for my registration when I crossed back last time. I dont know if the Mexicans will care. If you bring a 2 stroke, I'd trailer all the way to McAllen.

But, if your big KTM is the 950/990, you should be able to do a good portion out there with the bike no problemo. It'll be easier just to ride the big ktm out anyways.

Awesome videos!! Worries me a little bit though! Never been on a dual sport ride, and Have no clue as to what to bring along for possible breakdowns. Havent had my DR for long, and dony have lots of baggage to pak things in, and wouldnt know what to bring. Been around the country on a Goldwing, but this will be new. BTW, Ive got room for one bike on my trailer, and would like to split a room ( I guess thats normal?) and will be driving down from Round Rock if anyone is interested. Tom

Tom,

There is a suggested packing list in the ride guide. It will give you a good idea of what you should be packing with you on this trip.

With a range of about 150 miles, the stock gas tank on a DR should be okay for MexTrek as long as you manage your fuel carefully.

Stock gas tanks are lighter, too, than when laden down with extra gas in a bigger tank. ;-)

Very, very easy ----- if you speak Spanish or know someone who speaks Spanish.

Just call one of the 2 hotels on the plaza in Galeana and make a reservation over the phone. The phone numbers for both hotels are in the ride guide all registered riders receive.

The one challenge is no one at either hotel speaks English, so you need to speak enough Spanish to make a reservation or get a spanish speaking friend/co-worker/relative/etc to call for you.

fairly new to the forum. I live in Corpus (just 120 miles north of McAllen), so I'm close enough to roll with you guys. Not sure of what bike to ride. I'm guessing the Ducati 1098s is a hot item down there, so maybe the 1200 GS? lol

For those of you who are new to the whole "border living" thing, make sure you have your passport, its required even for short border crossings.

I've never taken a bike deep into Mexico, I better check to see if my insurance will buy me another one if the Bandidos decide they wanna roll me, lol

I'm sending my registration in tomorrow. I think I may wanna do the dirt ride a few days before, thinking about grabbing a different bike for this purpose.

I think I've narrowed to a KTM 690 Enduro, or the F800GS. I like the KTM, but the BMW motor sounds so much smoother for my tastes, but I'm gonna have to see about riding them both in the next few weeks to figure it out.

If you want to tackle the class 3 stuff, the KTM is probably the better choice.
If you are going to stick with the class 2 stuff, the 800GS would be a great choice.

It all depends on what you want to ride when you get there.

I got the higher highway ready gearing (15/39 vs the old 13/52) on the drz-sm today, so I'm getting closer and closer to being ready. GPS mount is complete. Now need tires and luggage. Looking into tire choices I think I found a nice set-up courtesy of my friend Justine's outfitting her significant other's WR250X SM for the dirt. The 17" wide rim looks crazy with a 120 rear tire mounted on the front. Amazingly, the bike rides great in a variety of offroad conditions, and just floats over soft sand.

All the information you can stand in the links below

Blank tourist visa cards await you in piles at the border aduana

You can use the new Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative Passport Card in place of a passport, if you have one. Must have one or the other.

Motorcycle Registration suffices but title will work. Most people use registration. Must have one or the other.

Driver's license

Mexico insurance for the bike. Optional but minimum liability recommended.

Credit Card or Debit Card in the name of the person on the registration/title. Your card will be charged the fee for the TVIP, plus it will be "pinged" for the cost of the bond (tested but not actually charged). No card or card not effective, be prepared to post cash bond for the bike. Can be up to $400 U.S.

I really need to pay more attention when browsing twtex from work!

In the first post you said all paperwork should be in place, does that mean we have to have FMT filled out or do we do this at the border? I'll carry 4 copies of passport, title, DL, etc for border crossing. Also, someone told me we can get insurance at the border, is this viable and cheap or should I just call my insurance provider (was told it maybe cheaper to get at the border, but with my limited (NO) Spanish skills may be an issue)

Richard_

solorider,

There are several choices for doing the tourist and import paperwork. You can do most of it prior to leaving via:
- mail or
- at the local Mexican consulate.

You can also do it all at the border.

You can buy insurance from one of the Mexican insurance companies, on-line, before you leave (that's what I do and recomend - info is in the ride guide) or you can buy it at the border (takes about 1 hour) from one of the insurance stores just across the border.

I will probably be crossing the border on Sunday or Monday the weekend before. Anybody else heading down early?

I had planned to do the Los Ebanos ferry crossing last year but the big storms and flooding in Mexico shut it down. Does anybody know if is running now?

We are planning to do the ferry crossing on the 10th. I hope its open.... or it'll be a 40 mile out of the way trip for nothing.

Does anyone know how to find out if the ferry is or isnt running on a daily basis?

I just got off the phone with the US Customs at the Los Ebanos crossing. The ferry runs daily from 8am until about 3pm. I believe there is a Customs office on the MX side to get the Tourist Visa. There is not an Aduana there though so you need to have your Vehicle Import Permit before you get there. Either get it online or stop in Pharr or McAllen on your way. If you don't get it online, you might as well get the Tourist Visa when you get the Import Permit.

I forgot to post the number in case you want to speak to them yourself.

I meant to say I "think" there is a Imigration office on the MX side....The officer I spoke to had never been across the ferry.... :lol2: I'm almost certain though that there is no Aduana (Customs).

Maybe I don't know what I talking about...:lol2: It's not the first time.

This site (http://www.aduanas.sat.gob.mx/guia/horario1.pdf) says the Los Ebanos Aduana is open from 8am to 4pm.

I'm still digging.

There is no aduana. You can get the tourist permit though.

I like the idea of going through Los Ebanos instead of Reynosa. Lets you skip the mess in Reynosa, plus its only 24 miles from where we are parking our vehicles...

I'm not sure what bike I will be taking this year. If it's the KLR I may end up riding all the way again. If I take the DR350 I will definitely trailer to at least Austin and maybe all the way to the border. Maybe we can hook up early in Galeana. Where are you guys crossing?

He says he hopes so. I'd prefer to do some exploratory routes.

Can I get some sage advice from some of you major Mexican veterans? There are 5 little kids in the village of Mimbres that I talked to for a while when down there in January. I am trying to think of something to bring for them to sort of help them out in some way? Any ideas? Nothing fancy. I mean heck, they were tickled pink with dum-dum suckers.

Its easier for a novice spanish speaker to converse with kids, you often know the same words and they like to help.

I'm sending in my application for MexTrek tomorrow. Now I just have to decide if I am going to ride down to McAllen or tow.
If anyone else is considering parking options, according to this link http://www.mcallenairport.com/docs/AIRPORT_PARKING_MAP.pdf the McAllen airport has two long term lots. The economy lot is only $3/day.

If you want to be a major hero, just bring down a couple of deflated soccer balls, which pack up nicely in any bag. And a simple, small pump. Inflate the balls and toss them to the kids. Better yet, play a few games of soccer (football to them) with them. Leave them the pump.

The gift of a soccer ball and a couple of games with them gives a gift to the community and you'll be an ambassador for the sport of dual sport at the same time.

If you are planning on staying in one of the hotels in Galeana, just toiletries will be fine.

I don't know of any formal camping areas in or around Galeana. You could likely find a place to hole up out in the mountains somewhere without drawing unwanted attention.

:tab Are you riding down? If you want to trailer, I can haul both our bikes with no problem. The ride back for me from McAllen is just over 400 miles. I am not wild about doing that on the KLR (especially on knobbies on boring highways). So if you'd like to split diesel, it would not be a problem. I'd be happy to split the room.

I made it from Alexandria, LA to Lake Corpus Christi in one day (stopping over at Scott's for lunch-- total of about 500) and then LCC to McAllen in a morning (140). I stayed off of the interstate 100% and tried to avoid 4 lane roads. On the way home, I followed every beach road possible and made it from McAllen to Port Lavaca (265 miles). Thats on my XR650L, in rain from around Navasota until I stopped! 640 to McAllen and another 650 to get back. Was a good trip, but a sore behind on that one. (That trip being my failed trip to Mex)

:tab Hmmm... I won't be able to leave until around noon on Tuesday. According to the various map programs/websites I've checked, the time is around 8 hours. So we'd be getting into McAllen around 8-9pm, have to drop off the truck at the parking place, get our paperwork done, and get to bed late. Let me see if I can just get all of Tuesday off so I can leave earlier in the morning.

:tab The truck is a Dodge Mega Cab diesel. It gets anywhere from 22mpg - 15 mpg depending on load and speed. I generally cruise about 70-75mph and pulling the smaller trailer get about 17mpg. Also, the bed is covered with a locking shell. So we can throw gear in there. If we can find anyone else that wants to trailer with us, I have a second trailer that can easily accommodate five bikes.

:tab I have shared a room with both Wasabi and Irondawg. It might be possible, but I doubt you snore any louder than either of them :lol2: They can penetrate earplugs and pillows over the head, and several layers of sheet rock... :eek2: So the snoring is not a concern. Sharing a room would be fine.

:tab What about the return trip? Do you plan to stay in McAllen Saturday night after the ride back to the border? Or do you plan to push on through back to Houston? I don't know what time we'd be getting back into McAllen.

Getting late into McAllen is not a problem for me, but if we get there early we can get the border paperwork done (I've never been to Mexico). I haven't given much thought to return trip and haven't made any reservations. I'm thinking once we get to McAllen on Tuesday we can make a reservation for the night we get back, then start back to Houston following morning.
If without truck I was going to head back towards Houston and just stop wherever/whenever required.
I don't think I'm going to be close to that MPG and I don't have a shell on the bed!

I've been watching radar and have noticed that around Montemorelos and north east back to Matamoros, there's been some rain, but cant really tell. I'm wondering what gear to take. Last year, I took my Aerostich Darian coat and pants and wore long johns under light cotton pants under the darian, and a t shirt, fleece sweater, and the darian coat. Motocross boots. I dont remember getting cold but I do remember getting hot.

I was thinking of wearing my motocross gear, knee pads, elbow pads, roost guard, boots, but how do you keep warm and dry with that stuff on? Obviously, it would protect me better than the road gear.

Technically, I could have stopped and removed layers, but it seemed like there was rarely a good time to do that.

So you guys that wear moto x stuff, what do you do?

On DS type rides when weather could be inclement, I usually wear a jacket of some sort. Jacket, pressure suit, MX pants and boots. If it rains, put on the rain gear.

September is always a part of the rainy season in the area. Yes the roads get messed up depending on how much rain falls that year. Even some asphalt roads can be compromised with landslides. Hopefully things will have cleared out by October. (?)

After spending the last few weeks getting the KLR ready for the trip, I rode it to work today for a shakedown ride. I hit a deer on the way home. Left ankle is broken in several places. No idea what shape the bike is in as I never got a chance to see it before being carted off to the ER. I see the doc Monday to find out if surgery will be needed. The whole left leg was pinned under the bike, so while the bike was spinning and sliding, it was dragging me along with it. The gear did its job though and other than being really sore and the ankle, I am fine. I am 0-3 for this trip...

That 0 for 2 for you and me riding together! Hope you heal up quick, very sorry to hear you won't make it. I can only imagine how....uuuuuggggghhhhh.....you must be feeling having to sit this one out. Glad to hear you survived a deer encounter....they can be much much worse.

Plan A: Solorider, I have a reliable Nissan Titan 4 dr. with room for yours and mine and one more DS bike and gear. Anyone else from Houston wanna split gas? I get about 16-17 MPG at 75 MPH so 338 miles one way * 2 = (676 / 16) * $2.39 = $100.97 / 3 = about $33.32 each for gas in the truck. Same schedule as Scott, leave Tuesday mid-day for 5-6 PM border cross and paperwork. Saturday night stay open. Return to Houston Sunday late afternoon. We can leave from my business at Richmond @ BW8 and vehicles can be left there without worry.

Plan B, riding with you again from S.A., Centex Tom?

:tab Right up to that point though, the bike was running great :trust: I just hope the forks aren't bent again... The first guy on the scene said the bike looked to be in better shape than me. Oddly, that was a comforting thought... :lol2:

:tab I don't know if the deer made it or not. It made it into the woods after I hit it and no one there saw it. I don't know if its partner in crime came on across or ran back the way they came from. It was a good sized doe.

Anyone interested in crossing the border at Los Ebanos to do the hand drawn ferry? You must have your vehicle permit to cross here.

So, my plan is to get to McAllen Airport about 6, sleep till 8:00. Then head for Los Ebanos (~20 minutes away). Going this way avoids the mess in Reynosa, and gives a bit of adventure too. Well?

Hi Stingray, I bought the Bicimaps 2010 Northeast from the mexicomaps.com website about 8 last night. I just got the unlock codes about 15 minutes ago. Earlier this morning I received an email from Mark at Mexico maps saying the unlock codes would come from bicimaps directly and I should add their address to my contact list. I did but Gmail marked the message as spam anyway. Check all spam filters.

I won't be able to load it till tonight, so I still don't know what it looks like.

I upgraded to the 2010 version about a month ago. It took 24 hours to get the unlock code.

The one thing I noticed (and liked) about the 2010 version is that it now shows street detail in many of the towns, like Galeana. Previous years did not show street detail, so this is a big improvement when it comes to navigating through towns.

I have had great difficulty with Bicimaps. When my computer hard drive went out in the spring the owner jacked me around for three weeks giving false passwords and several other delay techniques trying to get me to pay for the upgrade.

After three weeks and numerous telephone conversations I sent him an email stating that if I did not receive the working pass key by the days end not only would I never do business with them again, I would chronicle and post his actions on several of the more popular web sites. His reaction was comical...he sends me this long winded email about how, after hours of searching they magically found the correct password and "wallah" my maps worked again.

The owner's name is Alberto Najera. My experience is that he will do the right thing only if forced to do so.

Ehhhhhh whoops!!

So, today I tried getting my tourist card and temp vehicle permit at the consulate office here in Houston...

I didnt make it through the security gate. The guard asked me before I went through the metal detector if I had any knives or weapons, I told him no... "Step through, sir." BEEEEEEEEEp. "Sir, do you have any metallic items in your pockets... " The whole time staring at the pocket knife that I carry with me every day. I said "ehhhhh whoops," "Sir, you are not allowed to have any item that may be used as a weapon on these premises. Please place the knife in the basket." I put it in the basket and then he picks it up to inspect it. The knife is one of those assisted opening type, barely push it out and it flings open. Well, he didnt like that very much, and proceeded to tell me that I was on the verge of breaking an international law, that I was to leave immediately, I may return tomorrow, but I must check in directly with the guard, name and passport number left with him.

Maybe I can find a route around the 20k checkpoint, bring my SIG .40 and not get my paperwork done all in the same trip to a mexican prison?????? :lol2:

"Three Fingers" Paco at Reclusorio Preventiva Oriente in Mexico City (largest prison in Latin America) is waiting for you :eek2:

All that paper work is over-rated.
Just proceed directly the to 20 km ck point.
If anyone flags you over, nod, feint a stop and then hit the gas.
It's all in your attitude.:trust:

I wonder if I could pull it off? Or do you think they'd chase me down?

Trice, wasnt it you--- one time--- who suggested saying "No fumar espanol" with blank stares when a cop trys talking to you about something you know you did wrong? :lol2:

You can pull it out of your hat when in a mordida situation. I have and never paid a mordida. :-D

If you're guilty, take your lumps

I love getting stopped by the police. Its an opportunity to make new friends.
Its a delicate balance between sincere respect, humility and a hint of humor that's hard to explain and easy to misjudge, just the kind of tightrope that I find interesting. Once I convinced a policeman that all I had was credit cards and I refused to give up my sunglasses as an alternative as he suggested. He walked away so defeated I slipped him a 20 after the game was over. I also believe in having the police on my side.

Usually they start off with some alleged infraction and threaten to take your driver's license to be picked up in court the following day. I've had fun just saying simply, "OK" and watching them squirm. Once this didn't work in Honduras and I lost my driver's license.

A buddy of mine spontaneously ran a 20 km check point in a car once, just for the **** of it, much to the surprise and chagrin of his fellow passengers. Oh, and the story goes he was carrying a controlled substance to boot. The police gave pursuit but eventually gave up. That was years ago, and I suppose they are little more sophisticated these days.
AdvRider has a post of a dude running a border check in Central America.

Last March when my buddy presented himself at the aduana it was brought to his attention that he had failed to cancel his vehicular permisso's from the year before, now he was on a different bike and all his current paper work (title, registration) was photocopies. Talk about bad form. We walked away from that situation quite satisfied with the mordida option. ('cept later on in the trip I had to start loaning him $ as he'd redistributed all his at the aduana).

But you didn't hear me say that.

After upgrading to Bicimapas 2010, I went in and checked last year's MexTrek route files. They were all dorked.

I opened the routes on the Zumo, selected them all, and deleted them all.

Then, went and copied all the routes to one version of Mapsource and uploaded them fresh to the Zumo.

Just checked them all and they're good to go.

Just a hint to do what Richard suggested I do, and check your gps MexTrek routes if you haven't done so already, after upgrading anything on your GPS, especially Bicimapas.

All this talk about Mordidas is timely. My supergreat DRZ400 just began to sound like it has a few loose pebbles in the crank. I have no idea how to go about diagnosing and fixing, but it's developed over the last 200 miles this week from a soft murmer to a definite "something is not right". Of course, it starts the weekend before Mex Trek and I am a little scared about the proposition of taking my bike on a 1000 mile trip with a possible mechanical.

So, is there any way to get my perfect running XR400 into Mexico, in light of the fact I have a bill of sale only, no title or tags? I have no issues circumventing checkpoints.....

To be ridden on public roads, the bike needs to be street legal, plated, and requires either a title or registration to obtain a TVIP.

No legal way that I know of with your current situation.

I think you would have to visit your local tax office, register the bike in your name, and get a license plate for it. That will give you an updated registration for the bike in your name. You can get a vehicle permit with the registration.

So guys,
I am bringing several forms of cameras in order to document this event. Video cameras, helmet camera, digital cameras, etc. None of my equipment is professional quality, but I do intend to give a go at making a nice documentary styled video of the trip.

One day I'd like to do a route or two with a group, jump ahead and stop to record at nice/interesting views, get the action shots in, etc. Then on another day or two, I'm planning to go exploring with Milton and get some good video, exploring new routes.

Should be an interesting mix of video, and I'd like to try to get a photo or video of everyone attending.

Sound good? Good. See you guys on Wednesday!

OH AND I WOULDNT MIND hooking up with anyone getting paperwork at the border on Wednesday morning and then heading to Galeana. Please send me a PM if you are planning to do the same? I'm a big boy and can/have handled riding in Mexico solo, but its always safer having someone else there.

Hey guys, me, ISurf, and JThompson are here at El Jardin posting from there computer in the lobby.

I dont know if anyone is planning on going throug Los Ebanos crossing, but they did not have any ability to do just about any of the required paperwork, primarily the tourist permit.

We had to head into Reynosa (in the rain) to get the paperwork.

Anyway, if you plan using Los Ebanos crossing, have ALL your paperwork done.

Well see you guys on Wednesday!

how bout this spanish keyboard¿
