Hi all, I will be heading out with a buddy to CO for a 6 day camping / riding trip in early August. We are mostly looking for campsite suggestions along the NM TX border, ideally in the Clovis area which will be our first night stop. From there we will make our way up to Durango for night two to do some mountain biking at Purgatory...then work our way over to the Gunnison area for night three. From there we are going to continue heading east to the Canon City area to set us up for the journey home. Any input on campsites, restaurant, roads etc. would be appreciated. Thanks alot...Jeff

If you can make it up to Tucumcari there is a state park at a lake just north a little. We made it there before dark in April after leaving Cedar Park around 0730. First Day of trip here. (http://www.twtex.com/forums/showpost.php?p=606302&postcount=10) Conchas Lake State Park.

Gunnison... the KOA in Gunnison is on County Rd 38 behind the Airport. One of the nicest (read green, not dried out dirt) KOAs I've ever seen. Tent sights are along a babbling brook.

Also in Gunny, Garlic Mikes Italian on the North side of town on 135 (the road that goes to Crested Butte) is my Fav. I eat there once, every time I'm in Gunny.

Kinda close to Durango... see if you can snag a spot in Mesa Verde NP. It's up high and a little cooler in Aug.

No place on the TX/NM border is gonna be nice to camp in Aug. IMHO - Push on a little farther and get a little higher. The KOA in Las Vegas is nice.

Thanks for the input... i'm starting to think we may push on a bit farther into NM. We will just have to see what kind of time we make getting out of TX. Thanks for the input on Gunnison as well... I havent been in that area during the summer in quite some time so I am really looking forward to it. Cheers...Jeff

If you are going through Raton, check out the Whittington Center. Housing there is very inexpensive. I don't remember if you have to be an NRA member or not. We've stayed there in the youth cabins a couple of times, and it was nice.

I always for get this... you'll gain an hour as soon as you cross the TX line.

Doesn't count for the hours on the road, but the Psyc part helps some :trust:
