And isn't there a Quarterway Airport in Plainview?

It's actually at Quarterway. It's a dirt strip owned by an Hardage aerial spraying service.

That and a cotton gin are about all that are at Quarterway. Three-Quarterway is just a gin. Halfway has an ag research station, a parts house, a Baptist church, and a water tower. My father- and mother-in-law live in what was the Methodist church, and they run the water department, which has 75 customers.

The madness has crossed the Red River-- there's a town in Oklahoma named Retrop, named after the Porter family (who were apparently rather backward)...This was fairly common back in the era when people rarely left their county. There was already a Porter, Oklahoma between Tulsa and Muskogee from Indian Territory times so it had dibs on the name. I was born and my parents grew up in Altus not far from Retrop, there are a lot of those old place names that are a bit strange like Gotebo and Deyo.

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrop,_Oklahoma)
Retrop is a small Oklahoma community located on the Washita/Beckham county line. It is located at the southern junction between State Highway 6 and SH-55. Retrop receives its name from the original community (Old Retrop) which is one mile south and one mile east in Washita County near the Retrop Cemetery. The Retrop Post Office (located at Old Retrop) existed from January 12, 1900, until February 28, 1905. The name is a reverse spelling of the surname of the first postmaster, Ira J. Porter.

I live in Rhome, just south of Drop Texas. Drop is southwest of Krum, Texas.
BTY, they just repaved Hwy 407 between Justin and Rhome, so if you like to fast around corners, there's lots of traction now.

And the Town Hall for New Fairview is a stones throw from my shop out back. Let's not forget to mention the New Fairview Airport is on the other side of my west property line in my backyard too! Fun to watch the planes come and go. Some of them even seat more than two people, a would you believe it we now have as many single wing planes there is bi-planes.
Not sure what happened to Old Fairview! (A side note, there is no Golf Course in New Fairview!)

We're big time here in the sticks! The Town Aurora is the other side of Rhome. It's between Boyd and Rhome and just down Hwy 114 is Paradise. My Aunt lived in Paradise Texas. Her kids lived in Cottondale.

When we go to "Town", we go to Decatur Tx.
Fort Worth is the "Big City of refinement" for us.:eek2:
Dallas, well, it's just some place we get lost in, so we don't go there much!

I use to raise Ostrich in Phlugerville. But, we ended up eating our profit.
Weird heh?

The old classic rock song "China Grove (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTCyO9MpGUM)" is a reference to a town near San Antonio. The lyrics have line that says "They kept lookin to the east"...what does that mean?

I think I even saw another town called China Grove in north Texas area too.

RB

-----

When the sun comes up on a sleepy little town
Down around san antone
And the folks are risin for another day
round about their homes

The people of the town are strange
And theyre proud of where they came
Well, youre talkin bout china grove
Oh, china grove

Well, the preacher and the teacher
Lord, theyre a caution
They are the talk of the town
When the gossip gets to flyin
And they aint lyin
When the sun goes fallin down

They say that the fathers insane
And dear missus perkins a game
Were talkin bout the china grove
Oh, china grove

But every day theres a new thing comin
The ways of an oriental view
The sheriff and his buddies
With their samurai swords
You can even hear the music at night

And though its a part of the lone star state
People dont seem to care
They just keep on lookin to the east

Talkin bout the china grove
Oh, china grove

I think I even saw another town called China Grove in north Texas area too.
"At various times in Texas history, other small towns named China Grove - for local groves of chinaberry trees- have appeared and disappeared or have been renamed. This village [South Texas, Bexar County], on the other hand, was immortalized in the 1973 Doobie Brothers song China Grove about the residents of a "sleepy little town/down around San Antone." By the mid-1900's, the town was less sleepy as it began to participate in the San Antonio area's growth."

Muleshoe and More. The Remarkable Stories Behind the Naming of Texas Towns. 1999, Bill Bradfield and Clare Bradfield. Gulf Publishing Company: Houston.

Suggestion: this book occupy a space on bikes next to the Roads of Texas. Browse through it when stopping to eat pie or burgers, or sit a spell in the shade of a chinaberry tree.

And is Altus some twist on Tulsa?
Here are the origins from a book that I have.

From Oklahoma Place Names by George H. Shirk
County seat of Jackson County. Post office established October 27, 1890. From July 10, 1901, to May 27, 1904, the post office name was Leger. Its name comes from the Latin word meaning "high." the original town, Frazier, was built along low ground, and when it was destroyed by high water, the residents moved the new location to higher land.

From Oklahoma Place Names by George H. Shirk
County seat of Tulsa County. Post office established March 25, 1879, and now the states second largest city. Its name comes from Tulsey Town, an old Creek town in Alabama.

Or to the North East you'll find Queen City.

Looneyville is on FM 343. Also on FM343, just a little down the road from Looneyville, is Loco Valley. There's even a Loco Valley Volunteer Fire Department. The road markers for these two wild and crazy towns are so popular with teenagers, that TxDOT has long since given up trying to keep a sign up.

I wonder if they ever have arguments over which town is the craziest?

[QUOTE=Tracker;640664]Dime Box (according to the Interwebs: he name comes from the practice of leaving a dime in a box at Brown's Mill to get a letter delivered to Giddings. )

There's Old Dimebox, near Dimebox. This always seemed strange. Most cities named in sequence are "Name" followed by "New Name." I guess the town founders knew something about the original site that led them to believe that the town would have to be moved to a new location after a few years, so they named the original "Old Dimebox" in anticipation of the future move?!

I saw Cut 'n Shoot in an earlier post, but has anyone mentioned Gun Barrel City? Or Hoop & Holler. East of San Augustine, on Tx 21 there's a Lickskillet community.

I've been through Kickapoo many times. The older forum members will remember "Kickapoo Joy Juice" from the Lil' Abner comic strip from years ago. Yes, Kickapoo Joy Juice is just what it sounds like - Moonshine. After drink large quantities of KJJ you might end up in Happy, TX or Smiley,TX.

ENOUGH! I've got things to do!

Since Teeds resurrected the thread, I'd like to mention that I rode to Iraan on Sunday (pronounced "Ira-Ann"). I hadn't had any good barbecue in months, so it was time to go visit Dana and Nancy.

Best barbecue in West Texas, hands down:

Been looking for a good place for a good first-post on this forum. Oh my, is this it!

Can't believe the guys haven't mentioned Tool. Maybe I missed it.

Go west and there's Styx - who'd name a town after a river of dead people?

Little Hope is sort of between Canton and Ben Wheeler:

And, my fraternal ancestors came from Bells - a-hemm, near Hwy 697:sun:

Kamay, TX. in Wichita Co.

Named after the KMA Oil Company who owned the land. The postal service wouldn't give it a post office with the initials as a name. So it was changed to Kamay. Pronounced K-M-A.

The good thing about being a noob is all the threads are new to me. Lots of entertaining reading to help pass the long cold winter. I had to read all 134 post to make sure no one mentioned Big Foot. I know its south of San Antonio cause I was through there years ago but I can't find it on the map? Pop quiz: who was the town of Big Foot named after?

Fuzzybunny

My hometown is Bovina. It's a variation of Bovine because it was originally called Bull Town because of all the cattle. It was the main railroad shipping point for the XIT ranch.

Also in West Texas is Tokio.

And if you think about it, Waco is pretty silly...

Why, it was named after William A. A. "Bigfoot" Wallace. Of course!

See the page on Bigfoot, Texas on Texas Escapes. (http://www.texasescapes.com/SouthTexasTowns/BigfootTx/BigfootTexas.htm)

I have to drop by there, just to say I've been there. Bigfoot is at the intersection of Farm roads 462 and 472, eighteen miles northeast of Pearsall in northeastern Frio County. About 29.046951 N 98.866524 W. That puts it southwest of San Antonio.
