Highlands Motocross Park/ Houston Hotshoe 1 Week, 1 Day ago Karma: 0
Open practice next Sunday July 26 Gates open @ 9:00 and we will run till dark. We have improved the track prep and the track is holding up great,it is taking lots of rubber and is super smoooooth. We will start our racing season in September and will run once a month all year long.

Looks as though the Houston Hotshoe Series is coming back. This was a growing series and very well ran. All reports say the track is coming along nicely.

Any interest out of the 17 inch wheel front brake crowd? We can see if we can get your own class.

BTW 3 bikes make a class. So if 3 Supermoto set ups show up, the 3 will run together.

Hmmm maybe a KLR class? I would take off my panniers to run in that! :eek2:

There will be a Mad Dawg class, 150cc four strokes? Will CRF150Rs be excluded? Just asking. My tracker XR needs an exhaust stud and I haven't gotten around to it.

I will check on this in a day or so? Tradionally 150Rs are excluded, but if there is 3 that's a class.

I don't have a 150R, I have a XR100 with a built motor to AMA mad dawg specs (stroker). It's just kinda futile to run it against 150Rs, though. They kick the 80s butts. Kinda why I was askin' about that. ;-)

I haven't been out to the MX park in awhile. Did they build a round track there, or is this run at that track just down the road? Battleground or something it was called, where they ran cars?

Wow, and even a carnival for my grand daughter.

Maybe "team grandpa"?

I've got an old Yazoo comercial mower I'm working on at present, think the guy bent a shift fork in the transmission, won't come out of reverse. Soon as I get that out of the way, i'm breakin' out the mad dawger and my tap set to fix that stinkin' exhaust. That's all that's wrong with it, rear pipe mount broke in Huffman (last time I raced it) and the weight of the pipe dangling striped out one mount stud on the head. Can't get at it, though, without loosening the motor cause the stupid down tube of the frame is in the way. :headbang:

No cotton candy, either? :tears: :lol2: Yeah, well, I didn't figure Chris Carr was riding at Highlands. CHERRY PICKER!!!!! Good pics though, get the adrenalin movin' a bit. As little as I've been on any tracks in the last couple of years, I don't even know if my adrenal glands actually work anymore.:lol2:

They had a hot shoe national a few years ago in Baytown. I was writing for a Texas moto magazine at the time and went there to interview a guy I'd roadraced minis with and was an AMA pro rider in flat track. Seems he was riding his R1 down from Dallas, cops got after him for wheelies in a little town in route, he got caught, never showed at the track. Judge wasn't due to set bail until the following monday. I was going to profile him, but the article didn't happen, just wrote it about the event. Got to know his dad, talked to Carr and a few guys in the pit area, a lot nicer fellows than in some of the more moneyed sports, just a bunch of normal old country boys like me, but a whole lot faster.

Stockton - Flattrack:
Boy that brings back memories, I took my HD Sprint up there 2 years in a row (1967 & 68) unfortunately I didn't qualify either trip. Stockton & the fair was fun.:trust:

You should have came this year, everybody went to the Main Event. I think the Pro Class had 3 Rows to start. Some racers where taking second row starts instead of the inside.

This was the 103rd year for the race.

That's flattrack! It's pretty rare that you find a too good to talk to you attitude.

The more fans we get in Highlands the better chance we have of getting the GNC guys to come later on.

I lined up next to Carr at Waco, which will put a lump in your throat. Even left the line before he did, that moment of glory lasted about 20 feet and 4 seconds till that XR 750 got a bite.:rider:

The Houston Hotshoe was really growing when the track owner decided to sell his track. If it stays true to form it will grow again.

Flattrack is one of the few motorcycle races you can see the whole race!

How is this working out? How long is the track and what type of bikes are showing up?

I haven't seen any information on the website, but I'm mounting up some GP rain tires on my XR100 motard and would like to give it a try if I won't get in the way of the big bikes.

Kevin,

You should email me. If there's interested riders for flat track in Texas, I'd like to help provide web support services for any groups of riders or existing orgs or startups or whatever.

Like yourself, I was also a home-built-track sweeper when I was 15...and spent hours throwing the rear out at 40-60mph on an old abandoned high school track in SW Houston...and where ever we could find a plot of land large enough to lay down a decent third mile or more oval.

For references...I've hosted FlatTrackMac for many years now...which is an awesome resource for tracks and contacting other riders...and I hosted alot of stuff for Bob Oertle up in OK. For our newbie readers, he's about the most active promoter around and goes by AMP on FTMac.

I saw on your website you mentioned Hal Jarrell. Yeah we are very old friends too. (Like there are any flat track enthusiasts who aren't old friends with Hal, right?) Since we're both old guys now, I guess it's OK to brag about him - Hal was one of my secret angel donors back in the early years of my volunteer work.

I don't see Hal very often - at least each year, we meet and have a chance to catch up while we both are doing volunteer work at the Texas Motorcycle Shows - he's works the AMA Vintage booth and I work the NOHVCC/TON booth. I'm really glad to have supported his Kids "Stars" programs for years. Without guys like him and his Kids programs, the sport might just die from lack of "On Any Sunday" generation guys keeping it going.

If the oval track riders you know are organized at all...or want to get organized better, I'd be glad to provide whatever services we have to offer for free. Unlike Oklahoma and Kansas and a few other states, Texas can't seem to hold together more than a few scattered lone riders in the flat track community...so everyone travels out of state....especially up in north Texas - not so much down south due to long distances.

Drop me a line anytime in the future...just wanted to let you know I stumbled upon your thread here. Back to the shadows as a lurker now... {;o)

Email sent and FLAT TRACK is alive in Texas! The Vintage Dirt Track Racing Association races monthly from Feb to Oct or Nov each year. We just drive alot. The 2010 Schedule is in the process of being built now. Our Texas tracks have their dates in place.

In the future we will be calling on TWT riders to come out in force. Schedule a ride and come watch some of the best racing in Texas.

While called the Vintage Dirt Track Racing Series we have modern bike classes as well. The 450 Pro Singles class is some awesome racing. The front of the pack you could throw a 10x 10 tarp on them an cover 5-6 riders or more.

Come and see the "bikes you started riding on, no we won't talk about how long ago" battle it out.
