View Full Version : Gauging interest: Three Sisters meet-up in October

Tim Kreitz

Some of us TWTers have been discussing on Facebook today the possibility of a Three Sisters meeting in October. I've scheduled most of October off from live performances specifically to make some early autumn rides. There's a handful of us so far. All are welcome, natch. Who else would be interested in participating?

heat is usually abated by then, the 100+ stuff anyway.
I am liking the idea, since my pie run plan (to make all the pie runs) was crushed under the boot of reality and other such nonsense.

I'm booked to chaperone band marching contests on the first two (and possibly three) weekends. UIL marching contest is the 21st. So mid-week in the first part of the month or a weekend toward the end of the month and I'm in.

Also has a link to the Three Sisters

Show those sisters respect or they'll slap you around. Here, my buddy Alejo rests in ICU after high-siding on 337. He entered a curve at speed and locked up the rear tire, then let go. Great roads that attract people from all over but they earn their reputation as the wicked sisters.

The weekend duty roster (and for that matter the certainty of continued employment) is not clear that far down the calendar right now. If I am free on the 24/25 I will join in the fun. Should know far enough in advance to be able to book a spot. May tent camp somewhere.

Awesome, everyone. Britt committed and is going to invite several other people -- namely Busa Dave and Bobbo. I'm also gonna invite my buddy Curt from Big Spring to go with us, too. Brandon (Neo) is a maybe. He's still kind of a new rider and is apprehensive about 3S.

Open invitations are also extended to Rodger (rogerlee) Blaine (a TWT lurker and riding buddy in Odessa), along with anyone I may have forgotten.

We can discuss the best place for a meet 'n greet that Saturday morning as everyone's lodging plans develop. I'm thinking we meet early, ride, grab something light for lunch, rest for a while, then ride some more (until the deer get ready to de-bed).

as someone fairly new to TX, can you tell me what the three sisters are and where they are located...........

The Three Sisters are Ranch Roads 335, 336, and 337 in the Texas hill country, west of San Antonio and southeast of Sonora. Towns in the area or on the route are Medina, Camp Wood, Vanderpool, Leakey, etc. It's a wonderful, remote area of Texas and the blacktop is as exciting as it is unforgiving.

Kerville-Schreiner Park (http://www.kerrville.org/index.aspx?NID=318) has cabins available including a 3 bedroom ranch house ($150 per night), cabin with kitchenette and bathroom ($95), and small cabin no bathroom ($55).

We'll probably go with a screened shelter at Garner State Park (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/garner/) for around $20 a night.

OK, now I am confooozled. Luckenbach is a long ways away from the Three Sisters (Leakey). I doubt that the Harvest Classic Rally will cause a room shortage in Leakey (and vicinity). Luckenbachers will be staying mostly in Fredericksburg (if not camping in Luckenbach).

Just so everyone knows, I am now iffy for this trip as a result of my recent layoff a few weeks ago. I had my first job interview today, which could turn out to be either a contract or full-time position if I get it. In the case of it being full-time, I may not be able to take any days off so soon. If it works out to be contract work, I may need to maintain low expenditures for a few more weeks or months until I get an idea on the workflow.

I'll keep everyone posted. If I'm not able to make it, I expect you guys and gals to take plenty of pics. :rider:

We need to be pulling this together.

Bear, I can meet up with you on 1604, anywhere between Bulverde Road and Hwy 16. We can grab Blueburg and budzrex going up 16 at 46 or Pipe Creek.
If whitebread is ridng the Sisters Saturday, we can meet that group in Medina or Vanderpool or ??.
Anybody else on the path, we can meet up with as well as we go along.

When we get to Leakey, how do we meet up with Tim and company?
One of the problems with trying to meet in Leakey is cell phone coverage. Only AT&T has signal there (as far as I know), and I have Verizon.

Once we are on the Sisters, there is a "dirt" option from 336 over to 335 via 3235 and 2631. I did it on Thumper, but it was dry at the time. Could be a different story if hard rains have done nasties to the path.

Thoughts people?

Correct. Saturday, Oct 24th.

Between 7:30 and 8:00am at the Valero 1604 & Bulverde Road. I figure we can make Leakey by 10am if not too much dawdling. 1604 to IH10 to 46 to 16 to 337: 101 miles. Or if preferred we can take 1604 to 16.
Take a break in Bandera. The rest of the timing depends on who intends to meet and ride with us and where they will be.

Since we'll already be in the area Saturday, (we are riding out Friday) maybe we can meet at the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum (http://lonestarmotorcyclemuseum.com/) for lunch Saturday? Then we could make plans for an afternoon route/ evening dinner plans/ Sunday activities from there.

We have Verizon and haven't had much luck with reception in that area in the past.

Well my "intro to hammock camping 101" will have to wait. Can't get any gear here soon enough to test/tweak it before use. So I guess I'm gonna try for one of the Kabins there at Koyote Ranch.

If that falls thru, there are several other non-camping options (some BnB's) in the area.

whitebread - you're leaving from Belton......what's your route?
Mine is tentatively, 95S, 973E, 71W, 290W, 16S - but I'd be happier hooking up to do the ride with someone else. Had fun on the last group ride.
I could intercept somewhere in Georgetown or Round Rock if you're slabbing it.

I am lousy at ETAs, so this is guess work.
The San Antonio contingent (Bear & I) is tentatively scheduled to depart 8am on Saturday. Top tank and break in Bandera.

From there, to Medina (ETA 9:15?) after that:

Option 1. Wait in Medina (in front of Love Creek Orchards Cafe).

Option 2. Head north on 16 to Koyote Ranch. If we meet each other on the road going opposite ways, I hope we know it! If not, we beat down the door at Kamp Kabin 11 for whitebread. If you have already left, please leave a note on the door!

Option 2. West on 337 to Vanderpool and wait at the Motorcycle Museum.

Option 4. You tell me.

Any comments or suggestions?

I need to know ASAP on those rooms. There are two rallies going on in the area this weekend, and if we don't make our reservations soon, we may be sleeping in the trailer. You guys call me.

I understand the anxiety.

I'd have thrown my hat in on this one if logistics were a bit more solidified by this time, but as it appears, a lot of time is going to be spent trying to nail down who/when/where everything/everybody is, before any actual "sisters" riding's gonna happen.

It's a recipe for a long day, and it's pretty far from home for me (meaning dark-thirty, with deer waiting to wreak havoc on me on the way home).

I don't think everyone is planning for all who go to muster up and ride all weekend as a pack.

I do plan on running into some of you guys throughout the daytime riding, and the nighttime cold-n-frothy festivities!:eek2:

Can't wait! Loading up tomorrow night!:rider:

Absolutely. That's the impression I'm getting from the message traffic.

Looks like folks are just planning to get down to the "area" whenever, go wherever their wants take them whenever, and just do the deal, riding when and where they want.

Go for it, folks! It's all out there, Sisters and whatever. Have fun!

Alright, some progress has been made. We'll be arriving in Leakey late Friday night, probably ten-ish or a bit after. We'll be leaving from there around 9 o'clock the following morning and will tool around the sisters all day.

The aforementioned idea of meeting for an early lunch in Vanderpool sounds fine to me. I'll be talking to Carl again in a few minutes (hopefully) and run it by him, though I'm sure he'll be agreeable.

I'll post up with more info shortly. :thumb:

FYI, we're staying at the D'Rose Inn on Highway 83 in Leakey. There are six of us coming from Midland-Odessa.

So I think the plan now should be where can we all meet up for lunch on Saturday? The Museum?

Yep, that's been suggested earlier in the thread and as I mentioned a few posts back, I'm all for that idea. We could meet in Vanderpool at the museum around, say, 10 o'clock. We'll make it an early lunch, then ride for the rest of the day.

Opinions?

Works for me.
Remember that the Museum's Cafe does not open until 11, but the Museum itself opens at 10.

Groovy. I'm sure we'll want to hang out, meet, and greet for at least that amount of time. We can grab a sandwich when they open and be riding shortly thereafter.

Excellent. This is startin' to get awesome.

I, for one, am really looking forward to this. The weather is forecast to be optimal: Sunny, slight breeze, and temps in the mid-70s. I can't wait.

And to think that this whole deal started as a poetic status update on my Facebook wall. Kinda cool.

Tim Kreitz is daydreaming about riding the Three Sisters on a sunny autumn day. The air is crisp, my bike is running perfectly, and I just passed through Barksdale on my way into Leakey. I'm a tiny bit chilly, so when I get there I'm gonna take off my helmet, close my eyes, and turn my face upward to the warm sun.

Tim,

Don't forget to check out the vast collection at the Vanderpool Motorcycle Museum. They also have pretty good lunch items including meat pies.

I was there with another group several weeks ago. We also watched a cruiser do a face-plant into a rock wall during a turn on 337. It was really horrific.

I've been there once before, but I'm sure I'll still take some time to have a look about. I've never eaten in the café, though. Looking forward to it.

Thanks. :thumb:

Just finishing up a few things and then I'm taking the afternoon off to finish getting stuff together. I'm taking the ZX7R and need to make a few suspension adjustments and put the stock rear sprocket back on. Everything else is pretty much ready.

Carl, Marie -- I'll see you at my house this evening. Everyone else, we'll see you Saturday morning in Vanderpool.
