Looks like the next time I will see the US is going to be in the Jan/Feb time frame.

I will be riding southern route(interstate) to San Diego for a job interview and while I am there, I figure it is as good a time as any to take the PCH as far as I can go. I know California winters can be a bit moist but I will be camping most of the way. I will be in no hurry as I have about two-three weeks before I return home. I will be traveling solo with my camera and will stop whenever the feeling hits me. I am looking for information on good eateries and campgrounds. My only restrictions will be the winter weather of other states, going and coming. I just hate interstate but because of the months I will be stateside, my routes will be limited due to snow. The GS is ready and I have heated gear as well.

So the questions are: Is there any I place I just have to see? Where are the best camp grounds along the way?
Thanks for the input and enjoy the Texas riding season......I sure miss it.....

My needs are simple. My wants are few.

Have you also asked this question in ADVRider in the California section? I get great results there as well as here.

I'm not clear on how far north you want to go, but if you make it to the north end of CA, Redwood National Park is spectacular. Though, I saw it in late October, not full winter. If you google map it, the park office proper (where you can find decent maps) is at 'E', a little ways west of Orick. A little less than 3 miles north of Orick on 101 is Davidson Road that heads towards the coast and some campgrounds. I've only seen them, and hiked nearby.

I just finished PCH for the fourth time. You MUST go east on Nacimiento-Fergusson Road once you enter Big Sur. The road climbs a few thousand feet with amazing views of the coast and PCH. The 1.5 lane road switchbacks, without guardrails, up into the coastal range. The road eventually enters a super secret military base. Have your ID and proof of insurance ready for the base cops. It's one of the best rides around. Oh, btw, there's camping on Nacimiento-Fergusson Road before you enter the military base.

I always thought PCH was/is Hwy 1, not 101. 101 IS on the coast, just north of San Fransisco. Its easy to see why some Te folks get it mixed up. go here for descriptipon

It really depends on where your at in Calf to stay near the beach. At time 1 goes inland and joins 101. You have to use secondary roads to stay on the coast. At times I - 5 is the only game near the beach. Stay flexable and get a good Calif map. My last trip on the coast , my wife and I did from Cresent City to the Hearst Castle hugging the coast with a few trips more inland > Valley of the Giants road for one. It was slower going but totally eat up with great views.
And other good site to check is Pashnit.com. A sight about motorcycle touring Calif roads.

Glad you're taking the GS, Kenneth. Will you be in town a few days before you take off?
