C&C welcome. Shooting at 1000+ ISO & no flash, was a learning experience for certain.

All shots taken with a 35mm 1.8 lens.

OK... Not Beale St. but taken on the drive getting there... captured with the 18-200vr.

The more I leave the camera in "M" mode, I am finding that I am actually able to predict what I should set the shutter speed when I see a scene that I think is photo worthy. This is a big deal for me, because 6 months ago I would not ever take the camera out of automatic. (Thanks Sharkey & STScott:hail:)

Wow. Just wow. That last picture is amazing. I have a Canon digital Rebel EOS 10 mega pixel thingy and if it accidently gets off automatic I freak.

I'm amazed that at ISO 1000 there isn't more noise in there. I shot some 800 stuff today in the sun/shade and it looked like sandpaper.

Nice shots.

Edit:
So you're shooting the Nikon body, and the prime 35mm f1.8 is closest to the 'nifty-fifty' with the sensor multiplier, right?

Thanks. Taken at the Cypress Tree preserve near Leland, MS. (I Think...:ponder:)

Thanks Scott. I kept thinking back to Richard_ posts on him down on 6th street earlier in the year while out walking Beale St. Above 1600 ISO it gets really bad.... But 800/1200 is doable without much bother. I use Light Room 2 for my edits and am shooting in RAW. I did use the noise reduction slider a little.

As for the lens comparison. It is my understanding from what I have read that the 35mm on the crop sensor is the closest to the "nifty-fifty". According to the EXIF (http://duked.smugmug.com/photos/newexif.mg?ImageID=654665851&ImageKey=sMJ4o) it actually translates to a 52mm on my D90. I almost purchased the 50mm... But when i was in the camera store, I like the field of view better on the 35mm.

I really like Beale Street. Been there several times with the Mrs. over the years. Your shots brought back some fond memories.

I just noticed the full moon - way cool. Were they all hand held shots or a mono/tripod?

And tell me about LR..... What version, how you use it, learning curve and so forth. There's a bunch of guys on another forum I frequent who swear by it. In fact, I'd sort of like to see an initial image and the final version. Heck, you might start another thread for the LR discussion to not hijack this one more than I already have.

I guess I'm off to look at the 35mm f1.8 next. I've seen some VERY nice stuff come out of that prime lens and it's fairly bright at 1.8. My old old old gear was a 50mm f1.4 with no sensor crop on film :eek2: Awesome lens.

Well, that and I really want the 70-200VR f2.8 next.

1, 5, & 7 are my favorite. Color and composition are eye catching on the last one.

Great job.

I agree on the 70-200vr 2.8 as well. I think for me though, before I drop that kind of allowance money on a lens I will have to debate long and hard about not upgrading to a full frame camera.

All of the shots were hand held, even though I did have both a tri and mono pod available back in the hotel room. But when I realized that raising the ISO I was able to speed up the shutter speed, I left them there.

I will start a new thread for a light room discussion, as I am sure it will get lengthy... :help:

Thank you Sharkey, when you see the original prior to my post processing on the last one, you may not say the same thing. I applied a light room pre-set on it.... some say that its cheating, but I enjoyed the finished result.

Duke,

Great job on the pics. I love those 1.8 lenses for low light work. I really like how you framed up the 3rd shot - it really provides a nice feel of the street and all the activity. The full moon is a nice surprise in that picture, too.

Does the 35mm f1.8 auto-focus on your D90? From what I read, it won't on my D40x. Argh..... Comptemplating a body upgrade now to the D90. :eek2:

Nice pics! I've got another trip to Memphis coming up in the next few weeks ... might have to make Beale a stop after seeing these.

Yes it does AF on my D90. If you are serious about upgrading, If I had to do it over again, I would seriously consider the new 300s.

PM me when you do. I call first dibs on the D90.
