This year's Baja 1000 is scheduled for November 19th. Being newly retired and very bored, I've made the decision to mount my DR 650 and run the race... Well, observe the race at a safe distance. I'm an experienced Mexico rider with well over 20k miles south of the border with a hankering too see the greatest race on the planet up close before I die.

Word is, this year's race will be a loop that starts and ends in Mexicali. (I don't put a lot of stock in rumors.) I figure we can catch the race at a few choice points either on pavement or off somewhere in the desert. The main goal is to not be killed by a trophy truck or by another Merican tourist. I do plan to engage in some beer drinking and mingling with the native population as long as said beer drinking can be done in a reasonably safe manner. No, you won't bother me if you choose to remain sober.

Now, in regard to post race activities, I've flirted with the idea of heading for the deep southern nether lands of the Baja and taking the ferry over to Mazatlan. I've done the devil's spine, Highway 40, and found it to be an amazing 8-10 hours of wondrous twisties. (The dragon on steroids.) I'm perfectly willing to risk falling a few thousand feet to see the section between Mazatlan and Durango for the third time. We could finish up by running 40 to Torreon where we could take 30 up through Cuatro Cienegas and Monclova. We could come out at either Eagle Pass or Laredo. With all this said, I'm fairly open minded as far as routes are concerned and willing to modify the above itinerary should someone else care to join the trip.

You should know that I plan on surviving the trip and I will ride accordingly. If you're the type that drags knees through Mexican twisties without much concern for diesel spills or stalled buses, you're probably going to be riding alone quite a bit. I'm in no hurry and 300 mile days are just fine with me. (With the exception of the ride out to California on I10.) You should also be riding a bike that is capable of some moderate off pavement riding.

Other than the above conditions, I'm a mean old grumpy dude with a penchant for expressing unpopular opinions and you should not be thin skinned. I admire folks who have the huevos to tell me I'm full of beans. Also, I'm not your mother or your mechanic. I'd be more than happy to pitch in when stuff happens, and I expect you to do the same. (Had some bad experiences.) I'm an advocate of the team concept for Mexico trips. We leave no one behind and we all share the load when things go wrong.

Well, let me know if you're interested. This could be fairly adventurous.

If I get 'retired' (laid off) I intend to take some 2 wheeled trips before I have to get all responsible again. I have a KLR, a passport, a sense of adventure, and a love of off pavement riding.

I will watch this thread.:trust:

The Strom would be a great bike for the slab out to California and an okay bike for the dirt roads we're sure to encounter seeking out the race in the Baja. There are some side trips on Highway 40 that are very cool. We're talking Vietnam type jungle with waterfalls and more green that most folks can tolerate. With that said, the side trips CAN be done another day.

In the event anyone is interested, this is the official Score website (http://www.score-international.com/races/1124/Tecate_SCORE_Baja_1000/2009.aspx). No, it doesn't have much info at this time, but I'm hoping they might update before the race.

Hey there Bill, (Topes)
Don't give up on me going on this trip just cause I haven't gotten back with you until now. Lets get together and talk soon. This not working for a living is wearing me out ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I can just barely keep up with all the rides and projects going on. There just isn't time to do everything that I want to do. If your bored, wanna go to a vintage bike rally this Sat. in Jefferson,TX.? How about Barbersport near Birmingham, AL. next week (Thurs. or Friday), and the weekend after that the sidecar rally in Uncertain, Tx. or the Houston BMW rally in Smithville, TX. and then,, and then,,,,. Give me a hollar. Hardy

psht...it takes you 8-10 hours to ride EL ESPINAZO?!

Kidding...that sounds like an awesome trip. I've done that route in reverse (w/ Copper Canyon instead of Cuatro Cienegas) and it was a blast. I'd love to see the Baja 1000 someday.

There are some awesome side trips off Espinazo De Diablo. On our last trip we wandered into a village, packed full of women with no men to be seen. (The road to the village was dirt and dropped out of the clouds into a small valley.) Seems all the men were off working out of town in a lumber mill. I didn't get much attention, but my 19 year old riding partner got plenty. We got rock star status that earned us free food and lots of attention. There's also a Mexican National Park about mid way.

I've wanted to find a side road to town like that every time (3) I've ridden it! I remember the national park.

Just a really stupid question here.....what does it take to do the Baja 1000.....is it an open registration?
back 25 years ago, it was just an entry fee and thats it.
We almost took my Jeep and ran it in 85.
Now, 25+ years later, I have a bike I can get ready for next year and am very interested in doing it as unsponsored.

Any info is appreciated.

Isn't it like a thousand dollar entry fee?

:eek2:

Looks like it's $1,625 total for a motorcycle with entry, insurance, etc.

Do it unsupported on a diesel KLR. Just stash 6 gallons of diesel and a set of tires somewhere in the desert. Heck, couldn't be any worse than a VW Bug.
