Big Brown Truck that is. I've been waiting all day for my UPS driver to arrive.

Looks like I've got some reading and battery charging to do next.

I specifically chose the D90 over the other cameras at work. We have access to a D700, a D300, a few olympus (Lousy), and a D90. I love it. Everything is right were you need it. It's easy for HDR shots and the colors are great even before touch ups.

Some untouched boring works shots: (The first two are from an Army motorcycle ride)

Congrats Scott, I am considering going to a DSLR as well. I have been looking at this Nikon D5000 Package at Costco for 900 (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11480706&cm_mmc=BCEmail_461-_-FOCUS-_-11-_-NikonD5000).
Any opinions?

From what I've read, the D5000 is a decent rig. You might take a gander at what Ken Rockwell has to say about it as well. Basically, it's positioned between the D40 and D90 with a lot of both mixed in. I was wanting a bit more in body capabilities, so I skipped the D3000/D5000 and went for the D90.

Here's a review at SLRGear.com
http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/1263/cat/all

Also, I can't find the link, but you can do side by side comparisons between cameras. I'll poke around for it.

A lot also depends on your current lens selection. If you're with one manufacturer, it's sort of expensive to change. But the biggies (Cannon/Nikon) and Olympus/Sony keep leap-frogging each other every few years or so, and it wall works out in the end.

Edit:
Body capability is a lot of the equation, but glass is what makes the difference. You might consider a body only option if you have some glass you like, or save the coin and go for specific glass you want. I wrestled with that decision long and hard but concluded I needed the body features of the D90. The kit lens glass is decent and you'll like the results. I could take a kit lens and put it on the most expensive body and it wouldn't provide for as clear a shot done with high-end glass on the D40 platform.

I only have 30 year old film Olympus OM System lenses, so nothing I currently have works with any of the digital cameras, so I am open to anything.

My sister has a Nikon D40 but since she is 400 miles away its not like we could exchange much. Maybe if they worked on hers a kit like that would be a good start and upgrade later and hand the kit lenses off to her.

Curious as to why you would choose the D90 over the D700.

D700 has a much better sensor (full size sensor) and broader capability (price tag reflects this as well).

Well, price point was the MAJOR factor. B&H was selling the D90 body for $809. The next body up, the D300s is $1,499. The D700 body only runs $2,399 or THREE times the D90. For a non-professional, there's no way I could justify that cost.

The D90 is a great camera, no doubt and I enjoyed reading your review thread you just posted. The cost reason in your case is completely understandable.

According to his post, Wes has a choice at work. I was curious, since he has the choice, why choose the D90 over the D700. I have my reasons but I'm looking hard at the D700 and am just digging for information.

I ended up getting a D3000 for Christmas from Naomi, the kit from Costco with the two lenses...so I am starting out in this world as well. It is going to take some getting used to.

The 3 year old Panasonic DSLR (non-changeable lens) has been passed down to my mother so she ended up with an "upgrade" as well.

I'll check it out, thanks.

I'm looking at the D700 due to using it for professional use otherwise, I wouldn't even consider dropping that amount of cash on a camera.

Matt....you gonna make the trip to Belton?

I just looked up what Belton is and probably not. I took several photography courses in high school and excelled in it. The teacher wanted me to get a Nikon F4 (at the time it was the SLR to have) and work on going pro (I was shooting with a Minolta X570 which I still have). She was also encouraging me to attend Brooks Institute of Photography in Cali. Various reasons, including cost factors, prevented me from pursuing that dream. Now that I'm done with college, Dee suggested that I take a second look.
