Gonna start working on an '82 GL1100 Aspencade. The plan is to bring it back to life as a touring steed.
Step one: get pics
Step two: figure out what all it needs

Needs a fair bit of TLC to get her going again, but considering her age, she's not all that bad off.
Fairing is cracked in a couple places from a minor down.
Brakes are sticking
Suspension is leaking (front) rear is down on air, not sure if thats a slow leak or a quick one.
Carbs leak down
And a fair bit of chrome polishing needs to happen.
Course the seat is destroyed, so I'll be on the lookout for one of those as well.
Thats the list I saw on a relatively quick glance. I'm sure more will show it self as the process continues.
And now some pics of the beastie:

The pans are bad about rusting out. Looks like it was stored inside so the pan maybe salvageable.
Naval jelly well be a friend, the ways of the wire brush well be instilled in you. Any chrome you clean up shoot with clear coat. As a cost saving measure consider making it a naked Wing.
I cleaned several gas tanks using aluminum oxide media blaster. Use a rubber hose to get to those hard to see places. This also allows you to clean the brass screens in the tanks. Lots of folks destroy them because they collected a bunch of rust particles and hardens. The fuel lines can be cleaned with re-bar tie wire, it is soft and can be worked around a bend.
Randakk has the most comprhensive collection of restoration info available. Naked Wings web site and forum are good sources of parts, tips and tricks. Keep a photo record and you can always post a thread on it. Speaking of which I wonder how Tims Kawi is doing?

Soozy does seat work? :ponder:
I understand thats an aftermarket seat. Don't know how much that means, but thats what I'm told.
It was stored outside before Desmond (Wing Nut) got it.
The fairing will be staying on the bike, thats half the reason for the bike. The other is the seat thats more comfy then my VFR. ;-)

Carbs are on the bench now and partially torn apart. Waiting on carb dip to come in.
While I wait, I'll probably start taking the brake calipers apart to see if i can get them to cooperate.

Did you get Randakks Cd on carb rebuilding? I have managed to loose mine. His rebuild kit is the best. better than the OEM which you can not get several of the parts.

I got the Randakk's kit. Skipped on the Howards instructional booklet till I started tearing into them, then ordered the book.
There's no CD with the kit, but I prefer a paper book when working on stuff in the shop.

I snagged Jack's '83 GL1100A this weekend. So now I have two GL1100 project bikes. On top of a '63 F250 that needs rebuilt, a '71 Mustang that needs a carb job, and planning a wedding. All with a lack of funds.
Ain't life grand? :rider:

None of these are critical, but if you have them, I might take them off your hands. Money is tight, so I'm trying to repair as much as I can, assuming the repair is cheaper then the replacement.
'82 needs
a fuel tank (its quite rusty inside)
Fairing (repairable, but would be a pain)
one of the lower fairings, but I forget which side right now
front rotors (workable, but not great)
seat (mine could be recovered)
'83 needs
rear master cylinder (possibly repairable)
mufflers
air compressor
The rest of the stuff I need is mostly stuff that I want to buy new. Timing belts, water pump, brake pads, fork seals, etc.

How much you asking for the seat?

Nathan, if you can't locate a good tank, you can clean the rust from the original one using electrolysis and it will get ALL of the rust out without damaging the solid metal. Costs almost nothing and is very simple to do. If it is already rusted out anyway, well, electrolysis won't fix that.
By the way, I bought a brand new two tone brown 82 Aspencade in 82 and rode it 50,000+ miles in 4 years then traded it for a new 86 Yamaha Venture Royale. Both great bikes. Only repair I ever had to do on the Gold Wing was replace the water pump.

Wayne, I looked into the POR15, and similar, treatment for the tanks and it seems to be a reasonable fix, but there's a lot of folks that are worried about covering the pickup-screen in the tank.
I've seen a bit mentioned about the electrolysis, I'll need to look into that some more. I don't believe the tank is rusted through, just rather rusty inside.
With the wedding to plan, the GoldWings have taken a bit of a back seat. I'll keep my eyes open for parts and info along the way.

Yes, I'm a member there, but rarely post (same forum name). What has me stopped right now are the carbs. I had them out and I thought I cleaned them pretty good but obviously I didn't. When I put them back on, it wouldn't start unless I dumped some gas down the intake. This means I have to go through the whole process of removing the radiator, hoses, fan, cables.. AGAIN to clean them. I don't have the money for the Randakk kit, so I'm kind of in limbo now.

That stinks. I've got the carbs on the '82 apart and nearly back together, just haven't got to putting them back on the bike. There's a good chance I'll put them on the '83 since its reported to have carb troubles.
I've got the Randakk book, and I can say that its well worth the extra expense. If you wanna save yourself a little dough, let me know and I'll loan you mine.

I'm curious if I can just use a whole lot of Seafoam and leave the carbs on the bike. If I had known what a PITA it was to remove them in the first place, I would have never bought the bike. I'm just lucky the gas tank was fine. The previous owner left a full tank in it so no rust build up.
What I've done to the bike so far:
1. both heads cleaned, valves adjusted and lashed
2. new plugs and wires
3. new upper and lower radiator hose
4. complete gasket kit (water pump to head gaskets)
5. new timing belts
6. new (used) fuel pump with gaskets
7. new clear gas line with filter
8. rebuilt the starter (but it still clunks when hot)
1TallTXn
02-24-2010, 10:41 AM
If the bike runs after you prime it, I would think that some SeaFoam would help. At the very least, it won't hurt anything. And the $7-10 for a can is way cheaper then a carb kit and all the busted knuckles required for that job!
With that much time and effort invested in the bike, I'd almost recommend just keeping the thing. Sadly the OldWings don't bring much on the market. Especially when you consider all the cost of keeping them on the road.
bigjnsa
02-24-2010, 11:15 AM
That's what I was thinking, I've spent a lot of time getting her to this stage and I'm so close. If the Seafoam doesn't cut it, then the carbs do have to come off.

those tires on that gl do give it a distinctive enough look huh?
