Yeah, it doesn't look like the other plan is going to work out, so I guess the pie run is as good a time as any to swap back. Much more fun than shipping, too!

Yeah, yeah, I knew you would pipe in on this. Problem is that Ellen will be just getting back for Korea that morning and the wedding is in Rokne (south of Bastrop) at around 3 in the afternoon. No real time to wathc the kiddo, get ready for the wedding and still fit in a little ride to marble falls.

This is on the 5th weekend (30th) and not the 4th (23rd)?

Thinking about it - still waiting on my gel seat (since May 7th). What seats are Rebecca & Rex swapping? Also, Susan has hurt ankles and knees from the dog knocking her down. But maybe by the 30th... :-?

Decisions, Decisions... ;-)

What time are ya gonna start there Bill? Kelly, how long did it take you the last time? And how long would it take only going the speed limit?

A big flea market - Canton First Monday Trade Days. That was a big factor in getting the Edom date moved to the 3rd Saturday...

(Canton is near Edom)

bluedogok
07-10-2005, 10:29 PM
I thought the Edom move was due to the Memorial Day weekend. The first Monday (June 6) would have been a week after that weekend.

Oh!!! On Saturday there was a show on Food Network called Food Finds American Pies (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show_fi/episode/0,1976,FOOD_9962_34933,00.html). They even had a clip from Royers Round Top Cafe and The Goode Company (Houston) in it.

Chuck, I wish I had better answers to these questions. Last time was back in February in the pouring rain. So when we got to Gatesville, we jumped on Hwy 82 to Hwy 281, then just headed south. That got us there around noon. And the four of us were travelling at excess speeds even then. As for how long it would take going the speed limit, I'm not even sure I know what the speed limit looks like anymore. :-D Just as a guess, factoring in breaks for fuel, water, etc., I'd say at least four to five hours.

What seats are Rebecca & Rex swapping?

Rex and I swapped my Mayer for his stock seat in Hico, but he's not all that impressed with it so we're swapping back. I kinda like both of them, but mine for longer rides. The only difficulty is the seat height, which makes getting my feet down harder with the Mayer.

Hmmm, I was under the impression that you had sold (or traded) the Mayer. I also read somewhere (Strom forum) that you can whittle the stops underneath to reduce the gap between seat and tank. Maybe I can talk Rex into letting me try the Mayer whilst he tries my 6fitty stock seat.
My gel seat has been on backorder for 2 months now. :angryfir:

Have you thought about lowering the bike in the back so that your legs can reach better?

Unless I get a different seat, riding to Marble Falls is probably a no-go for me... :-(
(kinda would like to ride with Bill again - just to keep him out of trouble) ;-)

I just ordered a "Sheepskin Buttpad" from Alaska Leather, and I should have it by the Pie Run. It'll get a good first test on Rebbeca's seat on the way down, and on my seat on the way back. Or, if it will encourage Chuck to make the ride, I'd be happy to swap Rebbeca's Mayer with the WeeStrom's stocker. Either way, I'm expecting my new buttpad to make the experience a pleasure. :-D

Maybe I'll just attach my wheelchair to the side of Scott's Sabre. Probably burn the rubber off the tires. Woo hoo, what a ride!

Just kidding, ya'll. Someone have a piece of coconut pie for me!!!

By the way, where is the October Pie run going be? I think I may be back in the saddle by then. I sure hope so. Maybe the walking wounded can share a table and we can show off our battle scars.

I'm pretty sure we can swing the child care issue for one Saturday with Grandma. We'll probably be leaving at around 0600 and taking the aforementiioned route down, then taking 281 back up. Our pace will have to be fast, so I don't know if anyone wants to run along with us. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

We could probably rig up a couple of bars off the front of the chair, rickshaw style, and build a trailer hitch for the Sabre. You might want to pick up one of those MX roost protectors, though.

Maybe I can talk Scott into caging it down. I know he want's to go, but doesn't want to leave me to my own devices for two days. He took me out for a birthday dinner last night. I was in the wheelchair and he thought I had me, and I thought he had me. The driveway was on a downward slant, and I was rolling along toward the front door. It wasn't until I was a bit past the front door that I realized I was on my own. Fortunately I wasn't going that fast and could stop myself. About that time Scott caught up to me. We will talk and make a plan, can we be put down as maybes? Squidward has to take one of his forks to Piper Performance tomorrow and see if it can be fixed, so we have to be maybes at this point ;-)

Sorry for the ignorance, but what's the Pie Run Route out of the Bluebonnet? Need to get back to the casa in Round Rock by 6:00 pm.

The route to/from just depends on the group. We usually have groups riding in from different cities/towns, and then after we eat it's all up to who knows a route and who wants to follow him/her. I'm sure someone can propose at least one route in advance so we don't take an hour standing in the sun in full gear trying to figure it out this time...

I'll meet those leaving from I20 and 377 at 6:30 even though it'll be a really early morning coming from Plano. I look forward to meeting everyone.

Hey, I think we've really started something here. What began as "who wants to meet me for pie" has now turned into a "concept" - you think we can have "Pie Run 101" added to the BRC/ERC?

Soloman

Oh geez, maybe I shouldn't have used the word concept. Albeit it was the best word at the time. In MI I just rode to really remote locations, with the beauty and remoteness being key, the idea of food never really entered my mind. It seems each ride I've done here is focused on two things, first food, and second really good riding with a fun group of diverse individuals with one common love.

As a participant in the original Pie Run Test, I feel qualified to answer this question. It started out on New Years Eve day last year when Rocket Cowboy (Dallas) and wczimmerman (Temple) decided to meet at The Koffee Kup in Hico for pie. A friend of Rocket Cowboy's, known as Gixster on STN and CF (Oklahoma City) whom I had met one time the summer before when I was in OKC visiting my family. We rode up from Edmonmd and met some guys from Ponca City and Wichita, Kansas from STN at Eskimo Joes in Stillwater for dinner. Anyway, I saw the post about 10am that day, after asking my wife what the plans were for the day (which nothing was planned) I told here I was going to Hico (from Austin) for some pie. I also made a milk run up to Braums in Mineral Wells since we don't have them down here and got home about 8:30 that night.

That was the birth of the Pie Run.

The concept behind the Pie Run was to allow riders from all over the state a chance to meet other riders from here on the board. It seems most groups rides are typically all day rides and not everyone has the free time to commit to those, it is much easier for people to commit to a lunch and maybe generate a group ride with others if they have the time. The flexibility of the Pie Run (and BBQ Run) was to allow those who may not have time for a full day of group riding a chance to meet others and then continue on to whatever else they needed to do.

Plus....how can you deny that pie or BBQ is not a good thing when it comes to a food stop

I'm up for meeting the other Austin folks somewhere before we head up to Marble Falls. If Rebecca won't let us re-rail the thread for that long then I'll start slinging PMs around to get the story ;)

Anyway, post a time and a location and I'll be happy to meet up with everyone ahead of time!

Last time everyone (most everyone anyways) met at the Taco Cabana in Cedar Park and then all headed out to Marble Falls. A few of us from southwest Austin met in Oak Hill prior to that and rode to the Taco Cabana as a group. Unless I missed it I didn't see any rally time/place before the Marble Falls meeting time posted. I know me and Aileron (and our other brother if he can make it) are up for meeting with any south Austin folks to ride as a group.

I'm in NW Austin, by 183 and mo-pac, so I think I'll try and meet folks at the Taco Cabana in Cedar Park then, assuming everyone wants to go out on 1431.

Chris/Dana - Do you want to meet up like we did before (Diamond Shamrock/Taco Cabana) for the ride up?

JUST A PROPOSED SCHEDULE
Leave Diamond Shamrock in Oak Hill - 8:30
Leave Taco Cabana in Cedar Park - 9:30

How about meeting at the newer Diamond Shamrock, the closer to Southwest Parkway (I think by Foster Ranch Road) there is more room there than the small one that we stopped at last time. I will run out there at lunch to verify the location.

Sounds good Scott. Though I didn't know there was a newer Diamond Shamrock. I take it it's on 71 somewhere between the other one and 620?

Leave Taco Cabana in Cedar Park - 9:30

Don't know if the Houston crew can make it out there that that early, so we might have to meet y'all in MF instead of riding out there from Austin with you.

How about the Exxon at William Cannon & Escarpment, I know that one is there. With the light at the intersection, it will also make getting back on Cannon easier.

That schedule is just a suggestion, those times were suggested as a start time to head out. If we get some Houston commitments, we can easily adjust the schedule.

What, is there a Houston city ordinance against getting up earlier or something? j/k

I'll probably roll out of bed at 8:15 to meet Scott at 8:30. lol

As a matter of fact, Houston City Council member M J Khan, District F, has proposed an ordinance which states that within a 30-foot radius of my bed, there is to be no waking on a weekend which occurs at such ungodly hours as to cause headaches and pain to the eyes from seeing an early rising sun. :nana

...you want an ordinance too, now don't ya?

Unlike when Andy and I last summer met here at 6:00am to ride to Huntsville for a ride there?

I am NOT a morning person at all, those kind of hours are when I used to come home. But I will every so often for a ride, like when I got up at 5:45 for my solo ride up to the Pie Run in Edom.

So it can be done, just sleep in on Sunday

I live just down Escarpment so that Exxon is really good for me. lol Shall we say kickstands up at 8:30 at that Exxon? Then we'll head up to TC in Cedar Park?

It supposed to be the Houston-area run for August. Last time we went to Brenham, but there was some talk about doing College Station this time around. Which it will be is still up in the air. The thread to talk about this will probably start after this weekend.

HOUSTON:

Meet at the gas station (I think it's a Chevron) on the North West corner of 529 & Barker Cypress in NW Houston at 7am. Kickstands up at 7:30.

My Cell# - Eight 3 Two four four four four 7 8 9. If you call too early, you owe me a cup of coffee. :angryfir:

I still don't have the route fully planned, but I have some ideas. Y'all are rushing me for a meeting point so there you go. Anyone that wants to, feel free to finalize the route or make a better decision.

Yes - we started it in January - usually the last Saturday of the month. There are threads for pre-run (planning) & post-ramblings (stories/lies) of the previous trips still laying around.

Once this one is over, good ole Zim will start a thread about the next one (August) and where it will be.

Chuck,

Has your significant other talked some sense into you, yet? Are you coming down tomorrow?

I'm going to have to shame you in front of all these people. That's right, folks. In spite of the fact that Susan wants to saddle up on that scooter of hers and head on down to Marble Falls, Chuck nixed the idea the other night. "Why?", you ask. Because he wants to mow the lawn. That's right! He's passing up a sweet day trip, our company, and pie for a lawnmower. Okay, it's out. I had to say it, it was tearing me up inside.

Lawns are highly over rated. I'm working towards nothing I ever have to "mow, paint, or feed" ever again, to increase my ride time.

Now, that was cold-blooded, Kelly. :-(

I park my 'Strom in the backyard on the patio 'cause the garage is full of red bikes & blue is not allowed in there. The bike has grass stringers hanging from the chain. That was the last straw - we lost the small dog sometime last week out in the backyard but I can still see the tail and ears of the big dog, er, sometimes. So it HAS to be mowed. Actually, we just did it. Tomorow is front yard and rake/trim. Plus repairs on the storage building (rats have eaten a hole)... :-?

Just too much to do to be gone all day.
Maybe I'll just send Susan...

You have two sons - isn't yard work what they were made for? Growing up, my brother's job was to always mow the yard before mom got on his case about it.

Chuck, I have to call BS on that. After all, on Sundays we rest...behind the lawnmower. Or in a lawn chair watching the son mow the lawn. But, as I said at the restaurant, I long ago gave up on trying to make other people have a good time. I hope you come to your senses by tomorrow morning, but if not, we'll see y'all on Tuesday. :-D

So, like, is it going to rain tomorrow? Oops, sorry, I said the "r" word. lol

Scott - if is actually raining tomorrow morning at the Exxon then don't bother waiting for me as I won't be going. Otherwise I'll see you there and we can discuss options if the weather looks threatening. Also, I'll probably be there closer to 8:15 but definitely before 8:30 so don't feel like you have to be there are 8:00 sharp. :-)

According to multiple forecasts (for what theis worth) it looks like aroun 98 and clear tomorrow with a 10% chance of afternoon storms.

If it is raining at the time that I would be leaving, I won;t be at Exxon either. I have no issues if I get caught out in rain but I have a big problem with leaving when it is raining.

Ha! Susan and I went anyway - she wanted to celebrate landing a new job just before we were going to panic. She starts Monday. :-D

We started later than we wanted (6:35) and missed connecting with Kelly's FW group. And they had the table full when we got there at the BBC so we were put in the outcast's counter for latecomers (11:20). Gotta say that place is busy busy busy! Good food though. Brought a whole cherry pie home.

Very nice morning riding - cool, sometimes chilly, and overcast. Very nice.
Afternoon was hotter but bearable. And our new Jansport packpack watering systems were great!

Spent more time on slabs than we wanted but we did US287 to FM157 to US67 to get on Kelly/Bill's route. We deviated when it looked like we were going to be late and continued on FM580 to Lampasas and took 281 into Marble Falls. Only knew that the BBC was on 281 and I was watching right and Susan was watching left. I smelled something good about the same time she honked. We circled around, navigated around all the 4-wheelers (lots of 'em) and found a few bikes. Saw Rex's (warhammer) 'Strom right off with Randal's (fz1nutt) , uh, FZ1, and Kelly's (FWRex) ZRX on the end. Thought we recognized Debbie's (snoopster) SV (there is only 1 blue one in Texas, right?), but didn't see Rebecca's 'Strom, Allison's ZZR, or any others we would know. Turns out that the Houston group - one solo and a 3-group - were late. Still saw them, though.

Left a little before Kelly's group of 4 did and took 281 north. They threatened that they would catch up and pass us but we never saw them. We made one stop in Hamilton and one in Glen Rose before we charged up 144 to 377 and I20 so Susan could stop at Hulen and leave her ring to be repaired. Traffic from 377 & subsequent was the pits, in stark contrast to some of the cool scenery FMs that morning where we were basically alone.

Good to see old and new folks, especially Deb riding again. Talked a bit with Scott (bluedogOK) and , of course, Rebecca (Squeaky). :-D

Unfortunately, the trip was not without incident. On the way down, Susan requested a pit stop & I pulled into the first convenience/gas stop I found. I pulled in first but the surface was uneven and Susan lost her balance when trying to stop. The scooter went over to the left & hit my bike and put a hole through the windshield and a gouge in the front panel. :-(
Some packing tape made a field fix & at least it didn't buzz during the ride after that.

We had fun - about 423 miles for us - most we have ever done in a day. :-D

Well I'm just a bit tired after my ride today. However, I really enjoyed my first pie run and expect I'll make many more in the future.

Hey Rex (Warhammer), I'm just curious if you took the strom off road just before you waved me by? It looked really close and gave me a bit of a scare. About 2 turns before that, you were no more than two inches away from scraping one of your bags. I really enjoyed riding down with you, Kelly, and Randall and how to see you all again sometime in the near future.

I don't have my exact mileage, but it was over 550.

What a great ride. Thanks to Rex, Randall and Jason; couldn't have asked for better people to ride with. Very nice eating with everyone from Austin and the lone member of the Houston area contingent who made it on time, Debbie. Sorry the rest from Houston were late, but at least we saved some pie for y'all. Chuck, I'm glad to see you listened to the voice(s) of reason and showed up. Sorry we didn't catch y'all, but we took a little detour down Park Road 4 on our way home. If I lived in that area, I'd be up at dawn every Sunday morning, just to ride that road several times before the cagers got moving and spoiled it. As always, I'm just genuinely impressed by the high caliber of people that this group attracts. Looking forward to the next time.
