If you are a road racing fan, or have any interest in road racing, October 1-2 weekend is a must see. This is the
date of the USGPRU national competition at Texas World Speedway. The USGPRU, or United States Grand Prix
Rider's Union, is dedicated to 125 and 250GP competition.
Local wonderkids will be racing for the win in 125GP. Currently, Will Gruy of Dallas, Texas, is leading BOTH east
and west divisions of USGPRU and will fly in from Italy (where he's starting college in the fall) for this event. He is
the favorite for the win, for sure. However, there are other locals. Tulsa Oklahoma's Tyler McDonald will be racing.
Texas' own Derek Wagnon is racing 125 now and has been showing GREAT improvement. By October, I suspect
Derek will be a legitimate contender for national wins. He already has shown his ability to run at Tyler's pace,
though he crashed out at Oak Hill while leading Tyler.
I will be there. I'm thinking I might get with Barry Nichols (cmra corner worker coordinator) and work corners that
weekend. That's the best seat in the house for shooting pictures.
It will be the best national level racing in Texas this season, so make a point to get there and see it in person.
You will not believe the corner speeds these little bikes can achieve. The aren't mopeds, put it that way. A 125GP
can run over 140 mph on the TWS straight and NOTHING with headlights and a horn can HOPE to match one in a
corner. The weigh 160 lbs and have state of the art running gear. They are built specifically for producing low lap
times on a closed course, not for commuting to work. GP bikes are the real deal and Texas GP riders are the real
deal on the national level.
