It's been decided....by a vote of 5 to 3!!!

Round Rock 02/20/10.

Start Time: 0800

Finish Time: 1600 at the latest.

What to bring:

You. Your camera. The manual for your camera.
Laptop loaded with Photoshop and CS (not required but will help you in the later portion of the class).
A good attitude...we don't want a repeat of the "Chuck Incident" this year!!!.

St. Barnabas Church. 1150 McNeil Road. Map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=1150+mcneil+road,+round+rock+texas)

The entrance to the parking lot is on the east side (exit west), the building we will be in is the portable you see on the right side of the main building. Oh, St. Barnabas is the third church you drive by heading west from I-35. First is a big Catholic one, St. Williams, the next is a smaller church that I can't remember the name of, then St. Barnabas.

I've got to finalize the deal, but it should be at my church. Not sure which room yet. I'll post details as soon as it positive.

Great....I know you said you could lay hands on a projector (get it? at a church....lay hands....c'mon, that was a good one!!) but can you get a screen also or does the room have a white wall to project onto?

WoodButcher
01-31-2010, 07:07 PM
My parents own the projector. I'm pretty sure the church has a screen, but it is on my list of things to double check. There is a wall, but a screen will be better.

I will also bring my projector as a back up, just in case.

I am up in North Dakota right now, I read that y'all said it was cold yesterday, well... this is what I am dealing with.... :help:

Doc...you can download a ful functioning trial version of Photoshop CS4 for free from Adobe.com

It will be helpful when I get into the portrait retouching section...I am making a DVD with the PowerPoint for everyone and the DVD will also have the same files I will be retouching so you can follow along.

LR can do 90% of the retouching a portrait needs but Photoshop is much better for those kind of projects....and everyone loves a retouched photo of themselves!!!

I have Photoshop Elements on my laptop and Lightroom 3 beta. Is that good enough or should I get the CS4 trial also? My plan is to get by with Elements and LR3 (when released), so I'd like to work with that if it doesn't cause too much trouble. I know there are a couple of things missing from Elements, but it does a lot.

WoodButcher
02-01-2010, 05:27 PM
Oh, and I added the address and a map link to the first post. If the out of towners want me to get a list of hotels in the area, I can do that.

STScott
02-01-2010, 08:34 PM
As long as Elements can do layers and layer masks, it should be fine.

LR will be good also, I just think PS does a much better job on touch ups.

J-Dawg and I will bring donuts/kolaches for the preclass festivities and to knosh on while being taught the finer points. If someone will let us know where we can get them close to the church we will pick them up on the way in. Also, once the final attendee number is determined let us know so we get enough for everyone.

There is a Red Roof Inn in Round Rock that is $62.99 per night plus tax for a King Room. There's one closer in to Austin (near 183) that has King rooms for $45.89 plus tax.

I'm going to run out later and do a visual check, but this is what I remember is very close. Also, most of these are fairly new. 10 years ago there were almost no hotels in Round Rock and none of them were chains. The previous mayor knew we needed more to attract businesses so he lobbied for more.

Okay. Since Dell is close, many are extended stay or suites, but there might be weekend deals since they cater to the Dell travellers. Staybridge Suites, Days Inn and Suites and Holiday Inn are the three closest according to google. There is a Best Western on the north side of town, Country Inn and Suites and a Comfort Inn. Also a Wingate and a Marriott for those looking for a fancy place or that have points to use.

I'll do a drive by and see how they look and maybe check some rates.

I'm in south Austin, and have some space. So if need be someone or two could stay at my place. Now I'm down by the "Y" so it might seem like you're driving in from a LONG way off. But it's closer than Houston or DFW.....................

Dr Food, no goodies for me (but thank you so much!). I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and low esteem. lol The fix for all three is a diet. I will bring lots of spinach leaves for those who like spinach more than donuts...as if!

If so, I'll bring the D80 guide Saturday.

Where do we stand on headcount? I'm going set up tables on Friday evening and just need to know how tight to pack everybody in. :lol2:

Should I dig up my coffee maker? I haven't used it in a couple of years because I have a Keurig single cup one that I use for me. Guess I need to buy real coffee too. Might sucker my dad into providing this since he's a more regular brewer than I am. Just let me know.

Anybody still need hotel info? I've got an interview tomorrow that is going to wipe me out for the day, but I can go scouting some more on Wed.

We are still coming up. Will drive up after work on Friday. Sorry we won't be joining ya'll for dinner, sounds good though.

Not sure of hotel. After busting the bank on hotel for Mardi Gras gonna have to hope one of the chains has end of week specials coming through tomorrow.

We're still planning to bring donuts/kolaches. Will plan for 10-12. Of course J-Dawg can polish off a dozen Shipley Glazed on his own and never gain an ounce. Anyone have any special requests?

No coffee needed for us.

Should we bring extension cords/surge protectors? Hopefully there are enough outlets in the room without burning down the building. :trust:

Class is over and I am back from Round Rock.

This was a lot of fun and very informative! On my travels, I have constantly failed close range picture clarity. I learned how to manipulate ISO, Aperture, and Shutter speed in order to get the camera to "see" what I was seeing. I put this new skill to a test and got these.

Scott, thanks a lot for conducting the class. Very smartly laid out, and a good working explanation of the material. Thanks to Rusty and his dad for getting a room at their church. It was great meeting other TWT'rs.

I recommend this class to anyone considering getting more informed about photography. Before the class, I should have spent a couple of hours going over my field guide and using the camera, just to be more familiar with various functions. This certainly bumped my interest way up and made the information in my book much clearer.

Thank you to everyone who attended the class...y'all made the teaching easy. The class went from 8:00am to 4:30pm with a couple of little breaks and a little over an hour for lunch....and I still could have gone on for a couple more hours.

I talked to Duke and a few others and I am planning on putting this on again in October but as a two day class instead with the first day being devoted to exposure/composition/flash (on camera/off camera/setting up for portraits using small flash) and the second day focusing on editing photos using Lightroom and Photoshop, with an emphasis on getting comfortable with layers and all the magic you can make using layers.

Two days may sound like a lot but you can ask the folks who attended this class, I really had to hustle to get everyone out by 4:30pm and I went much faster then I really wanted to on some subjects and didn't go as deep as I would have liked to on others...especially explaining exposure/stops/EV and such.

Overall I am glad that everyone seemed to enjoy the class and several folks had "a ha" moments when the lightbulb came on as I explained some subjects....which is always a great feeling for someone such as myself who really enjoys teaching.

I am really hoping we can double or triple the class size next time.

Bingo, I was going to PM you with that very feedback. I was wishing we could have spent more time on the electronic side. And I could have happily spent more time on the shooting part. The flash stuff was lots of fun, even though I was the target.

Also, thanks for letting me play with the macro lens. I had a couple that I didn't shake too at the slow speeds I had to shoot. Good enough to start to suck me in. Now I need to borrow Dad's macro lens before I head to Big Bend. I foresee some flower close ups in my future or slow moving bugs.

Thanks for a well-done class! You touched on just enough subjects to give a solid overview of the possibilities between the camera operation, composition, and post-processing. I think everyone walked away with some new found appreciation and skills to capture and present pics.

Reporting in from Miami..........

Those of you who did not or could not make the class missed one heck of a good time. It was great being in Round Rock with fellow twtex'ers for a photogenic event. We learned about triangles and circles and such. We ate tex-mex italian. We had Round Rock Donuts orange colored donuts. And some of the most wonderfulest cupcakes that ever entered by mouth.....OMG, they were great. :eat: We got to see Rusty under multiple ranges of illumination when Scott flashed him. :-P

I have to agree with folks. Scott you did a great job. And yes 8-4:30 just wasn't enough time (and next time I promise not to doze off after lunch :doh:). A 2-day course would be great.....we just need to find someplace where you can set up the equipment for portraits and find a place with out doors stuff to shoot as well. BTW, 20 bucks is a bargain for the learnin' experience!

It was great meeting and visitating with folks who I had not gotten to meet. I'm thinkin that photography is a lot like motorcyclin......folks share deep passions for fun things.

One thing I learned after spending 14 years in the classroom is to expect the unexpected and be thankful for 1 or maybe 2 "Ah Ha" or "lightbulb" moments. J-Dawg and I had multiple moments during the class. Scott, you're an excellent teacher and know how to kindle the fires of interest   . I didn't even realize it was 4:30 until you said we had to go. Thanks for puttin' on the class and for the GREAT job of teachin' and helpin' this old fart remember and rerelate old learnin's to the new fangled stuff. And thanks for helping my other 1/2 figure stuff out that he needed to get his interest in photography ignited

Wish we had taken some shots of the folks during the class....but things went by way too quickly.

Oh yeah....if you didn't go you didn't get a chance to win some cool stuff in the raffle. Nothing like learnin' and good company and good food and WINNING cool stuff as the proverbial cherry on the sundae.

Rusty, thanks to you and your dad for getting the place, it was an ideal location for the class.

I enjoyed this session a lot, to be frank, I enjoyed it more than the first class. Maybe because I was better prepared as a student, nah... it's all Scott!

Learned so much, and am totally infatuated right now with layers in photoshop. Scott you have created a monster.

I enjoyed seeing all of the other TWT'ers, and am looking forward to the next session.

Here is a product of using what I learned this weekend just for fun.

The more I played I came across a new animal for me, PS Actions. So to build off of what we were taught on Presenting your image... I give you...

Layers and borders (this happens to be Polaroid T600 template) and text, and color matching to TWT for the background. :-P

Thank you everyone for the nice comments. I am very glad that everyone learned something.

Dano...I will probably not put on another class until October but if there is enough demand I am willing to do one in the DFW area and another in some other portion of Texas...the next generation of this class will be two days (Sat & Sun) so we can get more in depth than I was able to this last time.

Here is a one light portrait taken of Rusty (Woodbutcher) during the class....one flash off to camera left, held close to his face, and a high shutter speed to kill the ambient light.

Darn you STScott and your canon camera accesories. You were like a drug dealer letting me test the crack. Now I've borrowed my dad's macro lens and am taking pictures of all sorts of stuff that won't move. Instead of just have a wide angle lens on my list and maybe a replacement longer lens, now I have a macro lens and flash unit. And a better tripod, flash diffuser and a host of other little doodads. Thank goodness I'm unemployed and can't spend any money. Otherwise I'd be exercising the credit card.

But just think of the fun you're gonna have when you do get a job! :trust:

I'm having the same problem with wanting to farkle out the D90. I've already asked Precision for a quote....but alas their price is too high so gonna have to buy it from B&H. I think J wants to get a new lens. I keep finding the web browsers open to lenses.

Scott you're a bad influence.
