Just got my tank today, and it's covered in tiny pinhole pits. I don't remember my XR tank being this way, but then it was white, so it would be harder to see. Anyone else with IMS or other plastic tanks have this?

Have you asked the IMS guys about it?

I will, I just got it when I got home. I'll contact 'Jack' tomorrow. I have everything ready for the install, and I really want to get it on the bike... If everyone says "yea they're all that way", then I'll go with it. I think I would havenoticed the XR being this way though...

Other than an o-ring for the petcock, I haven't heard of anything special to install the 4.9 gallon tank. Am I missing something? I'm about to order one, so I look forward to hearing how this turns out.

The install shouldn't be a problem (wasn't on the XR, about 20 min), It's the thousands of tiny pinhole pits that I don't like (aesthetic). This is the reason I'm waiting to install it....

If you order blue, expect to wait; it's a non-standard color, and it's popular. They are backordered big time. If this can't be remedied quickly, I'm going with natural.

I just put a natual 4.7 gallon tank on my BRP. I didn't notice any pinholes.

I would go look, but I am in Pecos and my bike is home in Dallas. :-?

I'll check tomorrow.

Mine has a rough surface if that's what you're referring to. Looks like an orange peel? I'm assuming it's supposed to look like that.

Casey,

My white tank is pretty smooth. Don't know its age.

I don't remember seeing that on mine, but it's got big stickers on it. I'll have a closer look tonight.

That looks like a problem with the plastic (air bubbles) when the injected it into the mold. I'd send it back.

Hmm, I wonder if that is why they were able to get you one faster than you expected. Somebody else didn't like this one and returned it.

If the inside looks like the outside, I'd be worried about thin spots. Also, those threads look pretty sad. I'd definitely be thinking about sending it back.

Mine looks a liitle like that but not nearly to that degree, especially at the filler neck/threads.

Plastic gets like that when they rush the injection molding process for a customer who just can't wait. Blue plastic is especially prone to this if you don't let it set up for 4 to 6 weeks.

Seriously, I'm on the "send it back" bandwagon. Get Jack on your side by letting HIM off the hook with something like "Man, your quality control guys are trying to make you look bad, Jack."

Hey now... :-P

Here is Jack's response:
Casey,

I'm so sorry! Even if you were more upset than you are, I wouldn't hold it against you, that is crazy! I'm going to print these pictures up and give them right to our warehouse manager, and let him know somebody is not obviously inspecting these! He did, however, tell me that these "pinholes" happen with every tank, and that blue just shows it more, but I agree, they do appear extremely excessive. And as far as the screw cap, that is really not acceptable. I'm going to have the guys in the back check all the tanks made with that mold and get rid of any other defective tanks, and we'll send the best looking one left to you. We're going to get this taken care of! We are unfortunately out of fuel valves once again, so what I'll have you do is keep the tank kit that came with that tank. I'll send you out another tank, with a call tag to retrieve the bad one.

Can you do me a huge favor and pack the bad one back up (remember, KEEP the tank kit), and write this Return Authorization number on the box (so that I know what it is when it comes back to us)..

SO18753

Thanks again for your patience, and we'll get this tank out ASAP.

I'd like him more if he pays your shipping of the bad tank back to him... ;-)

Isn't that what "with a call tag to retrieve the bad one." means - a return shipping label with their account number?

basically, yes. From what I understand (he emailed me again), the call tag will be on the new box, so UPS will know to pick up the other box when they deliver the new one.

Casey....I'm pretty sure your tank is defective.....Probably won't make a difference to its serviceability but it doesn't look good at all...My IMS is smooth, just like all the others I've seen.

see ya in the morning ...

I just went and checked my tank and it has itty bitty (words not to be used except by trained professionals) pits in the surface of the tank. The pits are smaller than a grain of sand in size. To the naked eye, the tank appears smooth. I had to take my bifocals off and get my nose near the tank to see the irregularities.

BTW - As Steve knows, I got my tank only a few weeks back from IMS.

No leaks in the tank and the fit was excellent.

Y'all have fun tomorrow!

Cool. Forgive my ignorance. My last couple of returns with other companies was on my dime (see ignorance, previous).

:tab That's some nice customer service! Sargent Cycles was like that when my new VFR seat showed up with a cut in it. They sent a new one at their expense and then paid for me to ship the damaged one back AFTER I received the new one. This way I was not out a seat while waiting for the replacement to arrive. No hassle. I won't go into my Corbin experience...
