I've been told my Honda VT1100c needs to have the ring gear and all the assembly replaced. The quoted cost is about $2000. This seems a bit excessive. Any opinions?
Ouch. Generally, these are pretty bulletproof (unlike bmw final drive ). I'd suggest just looking for a salvaged final drive and bolt it in, lock/stock/barrel.
Try to find one from the same model Shadow as the ratios may be a bit different (not sure). Local bike salvage or ebay should be able to fix you up.
Also, dunno how far disassembled your bike is for the diagnosis, but be sure it's not the u-joint (Cardan joint) on the driveshaft that's worn out. Those are more likely to need replacing than the ring gear.
The teeth are pretty worn. The model was discontinued in 2007. There might not be alot of these around in salvage yards. Are there any good yards to try in the Conroe area?
