The Shed is 15 minutes from me, is that local enuff? All kidding aside I helped set up things for the The Shed Pie Run in May, be glad to do it again. Just need a head count, I guess it's 3 as of right now. Here's a Mapquest link for Edom: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?country=US&addtohistory=&formtype=address&searchtype=address&cat=&address=&city=Edom&state=TX&zipcode=&searchtab=hom

The Shed is (to use a technical term) smack dab in the middle of Edom. Looking forward to it.

I hate missing a piece of pie just to ride the best roads in Texas, but unfortunately, I have already committed; darn. :D

Scott, how long a ride is it, 4 hours or so? And do you have a route plan yet? There's a 50/50 chance that I'll go; I'll decide by Friday. Would you want to meet up somewhere to ride together?

bluedogok
09-13-2005, 01:52 PM
It took about that long when I rode up there by myself last time. I can't remember the route (the file is at home) but it was a pretty straight shot up to Palestine then I headed north to some FM roads. I will check the route when I get home, I do know that I went by the Dell Diamond, so anywhere between south and Round Rock to meet would be fine for me.

OK, I called The Shed today to make the reservation. I'll told them them the number of attendees is 25, but they'll want a fairly accurate head count a couple of days before to ensure room. I'll call back when we have that and include a couple more for late comers. Unfortunately I forgot a previous commitment in Dallas for that day so I'll be a no-show (don't you hate it when reality intrudes on your fun!).

I really must be losing brain cells at a very rapid rate: I just realized that I can't do the pie run on the 24th, a friend from Virginia is going to be visiting, and we've got tickets for the Austin City Limits music festival for the WHOLE weekend... :headbang: Doh!

I don't mean to throw a wrench into the well-oiled pie machine, but I just found out that Edom is having their annual arts & crafts festival this weekend.

I say it's too late to change the plan, but I'm not sure I'm even going so don't listen to me....

How about everyone just gets some buttons, beads, feathers, and rhinestones and hot glue them all over your bike and gear. When the group rolls through town, traffic will part like the red sea thinking it's part of the craft show! :rofl

OK-List updated.

A couple of notes:
1. As I mentioned to dutchinterceptor by email, due to the events going on in Edom this weekend, I think we should shoot for a prompt 11AM arrival to beat the crowds. I think it'll be OK if we communicate the numbers to the folks at The Shed.
2. For the Houston folks-be careful and keep an eye on the approaching storm. For that matter everyone needs to be mindful since nearly any Texas landfall will result in some rough weather for most of SE and E Tex.

I'll add a couple of spots to the number to make room for any late comers. Wish I could make it, had a great time at the last one. Sure would love to come up there this weekend, could use some me time if you know what I mean. And I have a scar that I think can trump just about any you got. July 7 I had my left kidney removed along with a volley ball sized cancer tumor. I am afraid we are going to be rather involved with a lady named Rita however. Remains to be seen I guess. If she heads our way I may well be needed to help hold the roof down some how. Maybe the next time, Chris Mitchell

Yeah - my only complaint about the soda shop was the 4-person booths and tables - everyone was kinda spread out and I didn't get to talk to everyone as much as I would like. :-(

Hey, hey, hey! If I can almost freeze my tush off for the biggest Pie Run ever back in January, do you think a little rain will stop me from riding for Pie?!?

Well, a lot of rain might stop me. I just went out to NOAA.gov and the forecast for Edom is 70% chance of rain on Saturday (60% here in Dallas).

I've been looking forward to this Pie Run all month, now that I'm riding again. I'm going to be very disappointed if I get rained out. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/SWingGirl/Non-Bike/SmlyCrying.gif

Hey Kelly,

I believe we're meeting at the Exxon station. Looking at the wind forecast, they're only calling for 10 to 20 knots in the Edom area. Not too bad, just enough to ensure that the sides of our tires get more wear than the middles.:)

If it is going to be close to bad weather I am out. I have a tree in my front yard that has a crack in it. I was hoping that it would last till fall so I could just cut the 40 foot branch and just have a lop-sided tree instead of a dead one, or worse, a damaged house. It doesn't really matter - the two stations are just across the street (157) from each other. I think we picked the Exxon - it has a WhataBurger attached to it - it is on the west side which also makes it easier to continue south on 157...

I'll be interested to see how the rain situation looks.
If it all comes together, we'll see Melanie and the Tyler crew in Edom...

From what Kelly talked about last night, we are meeting at the Exxon in Venus (SW corner of FM157 at US67) at 7:30 AM (thanks!).

Here is his route to Edom (used last time), approx 135 miles:

from Ft. Worth:
Hwy287 to FM157 (Mansfield)
right to FM157 (stop in Venus)
south on FM157
left on FM875
right on buisiness 287 (W. Main Street) Waxahachie
left on Wyatt Street (FM878)
right on I45 (Ennis)
left on FM85/334
right on Hwy175
left on FM316
right on FM2709
left on Hwy19
right on FM858
right on FM279 to Edom

I added a city or two...

I assume that we will run across The Shed somewhere along the way.
Looks good to me, thanks, Kelly.

Might need to adjust my status to a maybe. Depending on lovely Rita I might be evacuating some friends from the coast. Edom is on the way back, so a bikeless rider with company is a possibility too. Don't adjust the head count at the Shed for us, we'll fend for ourselves if it goes that direction.

I hate to be a fair weather rider and maybe an alarmist. But the weather for the Tyler (and Edom) area is not looking good for the Pie Run. Latest weather shows a 90% chance of rain and our local weather gurus are predicting a "conservative" estimate of 4-8" of rain with high winds. If the consensus is to cancel and wait till another day I'll cancel the reservations and make them again when we decide on an alternate meeting.

For people close enough to be home within a couple of hours, I guess the question is "What time do they expect the rain/wind/flying cows to get there?"

VFRJohn
09-22-2005, 12:07 PM
Well, in my opinion 80-90% probability of rain and winds 40-50 mph does not sound like a fun ride... even if the temperature does drop below 100 degrees.
I think I will retreat, in order to pie another day.

Unless, of course, the storm decides to hit Mexico instead...

Since there are 5 Saturdays in October, and since Rita is being a witch and screwing with our Pie Run, maybe we should do Pie Run IX on 10/1, and Pie Run X on 10/29.

Wow... sounds like 3 strikes. :D

For people close enough to be home within a couple of hours, I guess the question is "What time do they expect the rain/wind/flying cows to get there?"

This is from our local TV weather forecast web site:

"Saturday afternoon, continuing through Sunday, Very Heavy Rainfall and gusty winds are likely here in East Texas due to Rita. She will be hitting the northern Texas Coast early Saturday morning, moving north and entering East Texas Saturday and continuing into Sunday. We can expect rainfall totals of 4-6 inches, winds of 30-50mph gusts near 70mph."

The Shed is just 20 minutes from me, so not much of a ride to get home if bad weather decides to kick in early. It's more of a gamble for those with a farther ride. I'll watch the 5:30 forecast and keep y'all posted.

The way the traffic is in Houston right now, we could leave in a couple of minutes and would be lucky to make it up there by Sunday.

Pie twice in one month? The heck, you say!

:D

With the number of people NOT local to the Edom area, it's sounding more and more like we should call it. Even if it doesn't rain on us at The Shed, a lot of people are likely to get caught in the nasty stuff on the way home. Combine that with fuel issues created by the mass migrations, etc, and it just may not be our day.

dutchinterceptor
09-22-2005, 04:55 PM
Mark may have noticed this also but the people in Tyler and surrounding areas have gone into survivalist mode. Lines at the gas station, stations running out of gas, everyone buying up water, and the traffic is about twice the norm. Could still be a lot of traffic on the roads Saturday. I personally wouldn't mind an alternate day.

Motorcycle + High Winds = Bad

I'm not sure that you'd want to meet her Chuck; she seems to be a little "wound up" and doesn't seem to have a good "sense of direction" in her life. But of course she'd probably put a different "spin" on that perception. Outside observers have indicated that she's the most "depressed" that they've seen in quite a while.

We are a tough group, and could make this happen. The problem is ALL those tired cagers loaded with family and stress trying to seek refuge.
Our H-town folks have their plates full, Hill Country gang looking at radar, and N.Tex gang weighing the risk/reward factor.
The traffic is dense, the weather iffy, and fuel might be an issue.

I watched the local news weather forecast. The "real" Rita should reach us by Saturday early evening, but rain is forecast for Saturday morning. We're looking at a soak fest with 6-8" of rain through Sunday. That's a good thing coming outta this, we're in drought like conditions. 'Course flooding is always the downside of it. I think a reschedule sounds like a good idea, let me know. And Dutchinterceptor is right about the semi-panic state of mind here in T-Town, besides gas the grocery stores are getting sold out of bread, canned goods and such. That usually only happens during snow and ice storms.

Well, loyal Pie Runners, in honor of the cancelled run tomorrow, I am going to ride down to Venus at the appointed time (7:30 AM) and have breakfast at the WhataBurger there at FM157 and US67. I figure there shouldn't be any rain until afternoon & I should be finished loooong before then.

Besides, I really need to wash this mesh jacket... :-(

Anyway, if anyone cares to join me, I'll be there. If ya want to go ahead and sleep in, go ahead (my wife plans to). No other plans other than eat breakfast and speculate about the weather. ;)

For you PC types, I plan to pray for our coastal folks who are riding it out (and for the homes/livlihoods of those who evacuated) before I eat - God Speed & God bless them all... :D

See everyone on the Oneth... :)

Well, where were y'all??? Our door is always open! Too late now though, pie's all gone!

Scott and I wound up riding to Princeton, and having breakfast at the Princeton Cafe. It was a bit windy, but nice riding. Very overcast which kept the temperature down. Never did rain - and we do so need it. We rode over the lake several times and it's very low. You could see 4-wheeler tracks in the mud.

The afternoon got pretty gusty, so we didn't go back out. Took the cage and went to buy me a new office chair. :)

See you at The Shed - 10/1 @ 11 AM!

Just show up, although it is nice to say if you are going to show so we can give the restaurant a head count prior.

It is just a way for the members on here to meet others and possibly ride with them. There are usually rides organized from the DFW area to these meets and some rides happen on the way home.

From my house it is about 240 miles taking 79 to Palestine and FM 315/314 into Edom. I left about 6:30 and rolled in right after 11:00. I was the only one from Asutin the last time.

I am planning on doing it again, this time I should have my fur installed to see how well it works, and I have my Sirius hooked up on the bike to try it out on the trip.

The direct route is usually to get there on time, the "alternate" route is usually on the way back when there is a little more time to spare. Although since I was traveling alone last time I tried to keep it pretty simple in case I needed to call the wife if something mechanical were to happen so it would be easier for her to find me. Which thankfully that has not happened....now where is some wood...

The FM roads out of Palestine were pretty nice, I am sure we could find some more. Last time I came back through Corsicana because I wanted to stop by the Triumph dealer in Waco, and took I-35 back from there since it was around 100 that afternoon.

I'm planning on coming. I'll be exploring some roads on the way up, not sure how absurdly early this will require me to leave. Hey, a good reason to use my GPS software. When I've got an interesting route from austin i'll post it here. Portions of 79 and a couple other major highways will be unavoidable, how much depends on time constraint. I have to be back here by 4pm so on the way back I plan on the direct haul-butt route. Like 31 to Waco then I35 back to Leander.

I'll post a route up here tomorrow...probably starting with 2243 from Leander through georgetown to 29.

:tab Hmm... Let's see... 143 miles from the Diamond Shamrock on FM 247/980 as you head North out of Huntsville, plus your time to get here. You can run most of it at 70mph. I'd say maybe 3-4 hours depending on stops and your pace. That assumes a lot of backroads instead of straight up the highways.

FM 980 Northeast out ot town to FM 3478
FM 3478 North to FM 230
FM 230 West and then curves North to Lovelady
Cross Hwy 19 and pick up FM 1280
FM 1280 East to FM 2712
FM 2712 North to Loop 304 in Crockett
Loop 304 East to FM 2022
FM 2022 North to FM 1817
:tab Old Boston Rd goes straight here up to FM 323 outside Palestine
:tab Not sure if it is paved though.
:tab If not paved, go FM 1817 East to FM 323
FM 323 Northwest to US 84
US 84 West to Loop 256 at Palestine
Loop 256 North to Hwy 155
Hwy 155 North to FM 315
FM 315 North to FM 314
FM 314 North to Edom

Wish I was going :-(

Canton is about 20mi NW-ish from Edom.

But there is always a lot of LEO traffic in that area if you use the US highways and some of the bigger TX roads. Especially US 175 around the Kaufman area. Speeding commuters are a major revenue producer for those communities... Everyone runs radar on 175. City, County, and State.

Stay on the little FMs for a bit of a breather from the assault of K/Ka bands. (314 & 315 are two of the sweetest)

I'm in. Gonna try to be there by 10:30. I'm going to bring my "new-to-me" SWEET BLUE SV650 instead of the bandit (because I want to show it off)!

Mark Nalley! Are you going to be there?

For the guys leaving Plano at 8:00, here's the route from my GPS file I've attached an Excel spreadsheet (if that actually works). I quess it didn't. I'll see if Jerry will post it for me.

BTW, if you use the GPS file. It doesn't understand the "town square" concept too well. If you see some teenagers on the sidewalk pointing at you and laughing, you'll know you've been had :D So, heads up in Kaufman.

good luck

Ok, so that measn leaving my place by 5:15,
which means packing the bike and gearing up at 4:50,
which means waking up at 4:20...

Uh, I think that's a wee bit early for me, seeing as I'm working until 11 tonight. Thanks for trying though!

Wake up, you wimp! :p

Texian is meeting me on the NW corner of I-45 and Rayford Sawdust in Spring at 6 a.m.. We are slabbing up to Huntsville then taking the backroads route from there to Edom.

All are welcome. Post up and we'll wait a few minutes before heading out.

See ya later!

Had a friend from Tyler into the restaurant today and she talked about some flea market in Canton tomorrow and that traffic in that area is heavy. The main warning she gave is that there are ALOT of police in the area that day. How close is Canton as that I am not sure but something to watch out for. Anyone know more about this from that area??

Canton is mecca for Highway Patrol. Canton area is an absolute "No Speed Zone". Plus it is First Monday weekend so every antiquer for miles around will be out in their Suburbans looking for deals. 314 or 315 are both outstanding roads but be careful for local LEO on 315 between Poyner and Lake Palestine.
Ride Safe!!

The GPS is only as smart as the person operating it

Rob & Jerry -- thanks for the spreadsheet! Bush is in my backyard, so this will spare me some slab by skipping McKinney & BigD. :chug:
