I know it's early, but... If we don't start planning now it won't happen!!!

When: Aug. 22nd - Sept. 1st 2011
If you are interested in going to beautiful Ouray,Colorado, post up!:sun:

We went in July 2009 and Aug. 2010 and had an absolutely GREAT time! This is some of the best DS riding in Colorado and you will not be disappointed!!! There are 13,000 ft. plus mountain passes and the most gorgeous scenery you can imagine!! From Ouray there are countless jeep trails that offer everything from easy to difficult terrain, basically something for everybody!

We will trailer the bikes and stay overnight in New Mexico on Monday the 22nd then continue to Ouray arriving mid afternoon Tuesday the 23th. We will be able to get in 6 full days of riding before leaving Tuesday the 30th to return home.

In addition to the DS riding, there is some awesome street riding!!!! I am seriously considering taking my FJR for some canyon carving, OK for me it will be more like canyon creeping!! :rider:

Please post up if you are interested in going!!

:eat::rider::eat::rider::eat::rider::eat: repeat as required!!!

Sounds awesome; we took the KLR and the Versys up late in September. One thing, since y'all went in 09 and 10, and this is 2011, might one think of it as the THIRD annual trip? Y'all have fun!

GHT

Well technically it is the third... but last year was the first "group" trip, it was just a simple post that turned into 15 riders in Colorado!!!!

Last year was just down right awesome! One of those rare experiences I can reflect back on and still feel the rush and excitement almost like being there. (Think about facing the steps going down Black Bear towards Telluride and see if your fingers don't start twitching and leg, back and shoulder muscles begin involuntarily tightening). This is, by the way, a great technique to help make it through all those ridiculously boring business meetings back in the world.

Folks, this is an extreme dual sport vacation. Seven days of riding in country that'll amaze and challenge anyone. GHT put this together last year and did a first rate job of it. You can ride lush valleys beside mountain streams or tackle scenic rocky moonscapes at altitudes where the sky begins to darken. You can count on it being an experience that you will never, ever forget.

I have jeeped blackbear pass...not sure I want to take one of my pig pigs on that one...:eek2: I rode my VStrom from Creed to Silverton via Stoney pass and then across Engineer to Lake city...I would not do it again witha Strom...My GSA with TKCs yeah...Trying to get me a smaller beater bike for those kind of rides...I tend to ride like a fool...My last offroad foray resulted in $5K damages to my GSA...just got it all fixed back. I use to work for a cattle ranch near Stoner which is back toward Delores from Telluride. I rode pretty much all those roads at one point or another. Back in the 80s there was an old saloon in the "ghostown" of Dunton...use to keep the beer cold in trough of snow melt...It was like stepping back in time...Last time I was there, somebody had bought the whole town and fenced it off:-( I will watch this and see what develops...I know my wife will not let me go alone...she would follow in her Rubicon:lol2:

The weather last year was perfect!!!:sun::sun: Warm in the valley, cool to cold on the mountain passes (we got into a small sleet storm on top of Emogene), as far as camping goes, there are numerous campgrounds in Ouray and I'm sure that some of the guys that camped last year can be more specific and will chime in with their suggestions. Should I add you to the list?

So, count me in. Chuck and I are planning to start early from Colorado Springs and dual sport it over, we may not be there for the entire time but hope to spend a couple days.

By the way George ... did you ever get those dual sport tires for the FJR or are you planning on having something else there by this summer :-)

Colorado in August and early September is about as good as it gets for camping, even in the higher elevations. But with that said, there are freak snow storms and cold snaps that can't be anticipated. I have woke up in Colorado in August at about 9000ft, when sleeping out in just a sleeping bag, with about three inches of snow on me. But that was about 30 years ago, long before global warming. :-)

@ DwayneInfo this is where we stayed last year and it worked out great!

http://timberridgelodgeouray.net/

It is right next to the only gas station in town and there is ample parking for trailers and bikes. There is a campground that adjoins this property. The owner is from Texas and is very motorcycle friendly!

We stayed here last year in September and the lows at night were in the mid to high 30's. It's free and about 5 miles south of Silverton at slightly over 10,000'. Several outhouse type toilets but no running water or showers. It is a national forest campground.

I rode some with you guys last year, and saw Stan at an enduro in Nacogdoches. He said you were going again.
I am meeting a couple of guys out there that same week and we will be staying at the Hotsprings Inn again, which is right next door to Timber Ridge Lodge.
In addition to riding what we did last year (which was a blast) we are going to take a couple of days and ride some single track stuff out of Lake City and maybe Creede if anyones interested!

Remember, riding most of the jeep roads around Silverton and Ouray requires a drivers license and insurance even on dirt bikes and 4 wheelers. This is a fairly recent law.

From a Hinsdale (Ouray) county publication:
"Driving the Alpine Loop

The Alpine Loop is unpaved, and you will need a four-wheel drive vehicle to traverse Cinnamon Pass, Engineer Pass, and the side spurs.

Keep in mind that the Alpine Loop is narrow and twisty; drive slowly. Make sure you have a full tank of gas, food, solid footwear, raincoats and jackets with you.

ATVs and four-wheel drive vehicles are available for rent from local businesses.

ATV and dirt bike riders on the Alpine Loop must be licensed drivers and carry insurance for the vehicle which they are riding.

Check with the Hinsdale County Sheriff at 970-944-2291 if you have further questions about local regulations"

I road several of the passes for the last two years on my KLR. I was not able to complete Imogene in 09 because of snow and unable to ride Black Bear in 10 because of fear. I would like to do both those rides in 11. I've cleared my schedule for this trip. Count me in.

I've ridden all the roads and trails around Lake City, Ouray and Silverton as a Colorado 500 rider for 15 years. And as much as I'd like to do it all again, age and budget will not allow it.

But, and the reason for this post, the 500 may be in Ouray at the same time as y'all so get your room reservations in early. Also, hit the Bon Ton restaurant for great Italian food! It's in the basement of a B&B on main street across from and a little south of the Elks lodge. Just be careful at the bar there; a cute little bar maid from San Antonio talked me into trying a shot of Bookers.....everything after that is kinda fuzzy.

:tab I took both my KLR and R1200GS last time. After five straight days of riding the unpaved stuff, I was ready for a nice relaxing street ride on the GS. I ran just over 400 miles that day, making a loop up through Naturita, Gateway, Grand Junction, down over the Grand Mesa, over to Crawford, down to Blue Mesa Reservoir at US 50, back to Montrose and then back down to Ouray. It was a great ride. I was really glad I thought to bring both bikes. It was a bit tight on the trailer with five bikes though. We had to put the KLR on sideways at the rear of the trailer.

:tab I REALLY want to make this trip again, but it is hard for me to commit very far out. I will work at keeping that week clear on the calendar though. The KLR is pouting in the garage. Other than a few short rides, it has been sitting since the trip last fall  I need to pull the carb, clean it out, and get it running right again. Then I just need to give the bike a good going over to make sure it's good to go. Or... find me a nice KTM :trust:

Myself and Russ (Russ is from Alma AR.) are bringing our road bikes (FJR's) as well as dirt bikes to Colorado.
Our plan is to get to Ouray by Sunday the 21st, head out Monday to ride around Colorado. I hope/want to ride up to the northern areas and over to RMNP, then be back in Ouray by Friday the 26th. Ride dirt bikes around the Ouray area until we puke, then go home!

I know this wont fit everyones plan or ideal, but if it does, then come on!

I can't find anything online about the Colorado 500, there website looks like it has been stagnant since 2008?? Any idea when this ride will be taking place in 2011, if at all!!!

Also if you guys will start PMing or e-mailing (gtouchton1@yahoo.com) me your information, Full Name, Cell #, Bike you will be riding, experience level, departure city, etc... I will start working on the information spreadsheet. Also let me know where you will be staying so I can negotiate a price break with Timber Ridge depending on the number of riders staying there. If anyone has any other suggestions for motels, let me know!

Thanks,
Looking Forward to another Awesome Trip!!!

:tab Well, if all goes according to plan, we may be closing on a new house in mid July. Given the expenses associated with buying/selling property, it is not looking good for me this year. We will have to spend a good chunk of change to get our current house ready for sale/lease. For sure I would have to do the trip on my aging KLR again instead of a fancy schmancy KTM "cheater" bike :-P

OK, heads up on the lodging...:sun::sun::sun:

I just spoke with Mike at Timber Ridge Lodge 1-970-325-4856, if you mention that you are with my group (George Touchton) he will honor a $79 per night rate for 2 queen beds!!!! He said we should probably try and reserve the rooms ASAP as July is full and Aug. is filling up quickly!!! I booked my room for Aug. 23rd - 29th, he gets a non-refundable deposit to hold the rooms, so make your plans and give him a call!!!
Mike is a new owner and sounds like a really nice guy, they added a couple of charcoal grills that can be used by guests so we can cook dinners and save some money!!! My room has a small stove, microwave, sink and refrigerator!! There is one other room with the same set-up but it only has a single queen bed, he said he has a twin mattress that he can put in that room to accommodate 2 persons.

Another option to add to the motel method is renting a condo or house for the week. I've had several owners in Ouray quote prices and availability for Aug. 22 - Sept 1. This could be a cost effective alternative and maybe offer some additional conveniences. The places can accommodate several folks and include kitchen and laundry. Maybe even a good place for a group get together BBQ etc.

Let me know if this is something you'd like to look into.

Going to leave after she finishes and get in to Ouray that evening. I have reservations at 4J+1+1 RV park, its pretty close to the Timber Ridge. The cost will vary depending on your lodging and travel distance. I have secured a deal with Timber Ridge Lodge for $79 rooms with 2 queen beds, as far as other moneys you would need will be food and gas. Gas costs while actually riding is minimal because of the slow pace and relative short distances traveled (40-60 miles a day). Food would be your biggest expense, I am again working with Timber Ridge to secure the use of grills and my room has a small stove and refrigerator, if everyone wants we can cook breakfast tacos in my room and split that cost, sandwiches for lunch will save some and finally if we cook meat on the grills at night we can save some money that way.
To answer your question, from Houston I expect it will cost me $ 600 - $800 total including two nights in motels during the drive. Hope this helps and if you have any other questions PM me.
Hope you can make it, it's an awesome ride!!!!

:tab EVERYTHING in Ouray, Telluride, and Silverton is expensive. So if you plan to eat out, plan to spend $$. Things are much cheaper up the road in Montrose, but the riding is not as good ;-) If you can cook your breakfast/dinner, you will save a lot, the only real expense being lunch/gas. The $10 pulled pork sammich in Telluride was nothing to get excited about... But, you know what they say... Location, Location, Location! :-P

Hot Pockets, Steel-Cut Oakmeal, Spam and freeze dried packets plus Metamucil (plant fiber powder) to keep the plumbing regular. Actually freeze-dried food has gotten pretty tasty the past 10-15 years. The camping food use to be hideous...but with new dehydration technologies, it is mouth watering good.

I am requesting my vacation time here at work so I can get on the calendar before they come up with some reason I can't go.

Unfortunately I am only going to have 5 vacation days to play with, so I am trying to figure out whether to do the week of the 22nd or the week of the 29th, and have the weekends for travel out/back.

What is the word - is there anything that just can't be missed on one day or the other? I definitely am wanting to do Black Bear, so if there is a plan already clue me in.

So, I was walking along - minding my own business - when I hear a faint gentle sobbing. Being the soft hearted sort, I walked toward the sound to the corner of a barn where an orange bike was stashed among some empty feed sacks and bales of poor coastal. Brushing away a layer of rolled oats revealed a despondent bike - clearly neglected and ignored. My heart sank and I felt compassion. We, the bike and I, spent some time comparing rides we'd seen and enjoyed. The bike it seems was purchased new a couple years ago by an older gentleman who had no idea what a beginner bike should be. He was soon frightened and parked the bike away to avoid shame and frustration. I asked if the bike had ever ridden through the passes around Ouray. No, only around the pastures. I told the bike about the clear cool air and crystal blue sky that darkens to purple as you climb higher. About the sparkling mountain streams and the fresh smell of pine and cedar. It seemed to help brighten the bike's sorrow and I could see a shining gleam begin to appear on her long and nimble forks. But then suddenly, as though a heavy veil had settled on her passion, she looked longingly out the door toward the rolling hills and sighed at the acceptance of a life unlived. It was simply more than I could bear and in a desperate moment I dropped the tailgate of my truck. The bike looked at it questioningly. I said the trip to Ouray begins right here...right now. The bike was fearful since it had only a light kit and nothing more. I assured it we could work together to take care of all it's humble needs. And then I quietly said...load up!

Yep, except for a mirror and baja light kit...bone stock. I agree, Jake. That 2.4 gals. is way thin on mileage for most of what we do. Not one stinking gas pump on top of Engineer, Imogene or Black Bear last year either. I have a 3.4 gal. tank on the way. Folks, riding the passes around Ouray can be dangerous business. Nobody took home more than a few scratches last year. However, please understand, the potential for serious injury exists and does so in abundance. If you want to provide your emergency contact info then click here (https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dElMSU9KREs1SUVvWnh2Ynd3ekhnZVE6M Q).

This takes you to a Google Form that is shared with no one. The info you provide will be available to two of our folks and will be deleted after the ride. These are questions that would likely be asked by any emergency medical facility and would help the rest of us to help you. Think about it...

Most of the trails out of Ouray are not that long - longest is probably engineer's pass over to Lake City - one way is about 40 miles if you are going through Animas Forks. I would plan for the equivalent of at least 100 miles worth of fuel to get to the trail head, ride the trail, and get back (or to next fuel).

Agreed. Not sure how to gauge fuel consumption, though. Blasting south out of Ouray on 550 takes you to most trails. Then grinding away in 1st or 2nd gear to climb up a hill. Coasting or engine braking down the other side. Guess it all evens out.

Just got back from 6 days of riding out of Silverton...one of my kids was riding a KTM 250 with a stock 2.5 gallon tank. We hit every route possible (including Creede), and he never hit reserve (we did fill up at every gas stop). I was riding a 690r with a stock tank, and my fuel light never came on. Creede is about 65 miles, but the next longest distance between fuel stops isn't more than 50 miles.

My son and I are interested if we can find someone with room to trailer our bikes. We could pay for the gas to get there and back and perhaps split other expenses. We are just SW of Houston and can make it to anywhere in the Houston area. Anyone have any room?

I have been riding dual sports mostly off road since I was 10 but am am new to a plated 2011 KTM 450EXC. He is new to riding (except for riding with me since he was little) and will be on a plated TW-200. Last time I rode jeep trails was out of Aspen, CO on a 20 year old Honda XL250R. Realized at the pass that it would be a looong way to walk back if needed....... but that bike never left me stranded. Both of us will probably ride slow compared to others.

There are two single track trails off of Stony Pass...The first is Pole Creek Trail which is very close to the cutoff for Kite Lake (but on the opposite side of Stony, and after crossing Pole Creek when coming from Silverton). This trail is not well marked, but you can see it from the Kite Lake cutoff. The second trail is Lost Trail which is further up Stony and well marked. It is accessed a few miles before the reservoir just after the trail turns to dirt road. This trail connects up to Cinnamon Pass making for a fantastic loop...Also, the south side of Stony to Lost Trail is an awesome ride that I haven't read much about, but it is one of my favorites in the area.

Two detours worth taking while on Stony Pass are Kite Lake and Gary Owen Mine (County Road 3B, which is on the Silverton side of Stony Pass and about 2-3 miles up the climb). Kite Lake is well marked and a fun/rocky ride up to to the lake. Gary Owen Mine is worth seeing, but I think the best sight is above the mine...it is the prettiest place I have ever been. It is a green meadow/point at approx 13,700 ft surrounded by mountains...it is pretty incredible when the sun is out, and it is not frequently accessed.

For what its worth, there is a jeep trail between Imogene and Yankee Boy that is another of my favorite rides...its a long climb with whoops and creek crossings...lots of fun. It is accessed across a wooden bridge past the Imogene cutoff but before heading up Yankee Boy. When heading up to Yankee Boy, look to your left and you will see a cutoff with the wooden bridge...its a also a good water crossing if the water isn't too high. Its pretty easy to find...I have been told that the lake at the top is Silver Lake, but I haven't been able to confirm that info.

Pole creek has a waterfall about half way between the Stony Pass road and the continental divide. Trout are so thick in the pool at the bottom of the falls that you can nearly spear them with a stick. Just saying in case anyone likes fresh trout. The waterfall is kind of pretty also. Check the maps as the waterfall is not visible from the trail.

Stan the Colorado topo map I use in Mapsource has a lot of trails. Problem is, I can't really tell if their symbols are showing a jeep trail, quad trail or foot path. They just go from big chunky lines to narrow dashed lines...Maybe you'll have better luck with it. You can d/l the map at Colorado Topo Maps - Maps for Garmin GPS Units
http://www.miscjunk.org/mj/mp_cotopo.html

Also Carl828 just got back from riding around Lake City and has an awesome rr over in after the ride. He used this book http://www.amazon.com/Trails-Guide-C.../dp/1934838039
This looks like something to have for those who shun the beaten path.

We used to get USGS topo maps for whatever area we were backpacking in. Of coarse they have every pig trail and gopher hole listed but they don't show a very big area. You have to get several maps.

the "MyTrails" gps overlay map from gpsfiledepot.com has some coverage of the GMUG forest system. Even if you don't find it useful for CO, you should try it if you will ever ride off-pavement in Arkansas. Here is a screenshot of the area around Ouray. This is a transparent overlay map, it is meant to be displayed over your City Navigator or topo base map.

Also, here is the webpage to download the MVUM for GMUG

Seventies and 50's...That'll work! Had to stop for a train in downtown Mumford yesterday. Rolled down the windows, killed the engine...argh!!! It was 108 out there...:angryfire

Last year we had one morning in Ouray that was either 48 or 43. It's hard to remember right now with this heat but that feels pretty cool at 60mph.

I'm ready to BE THERE! :rider:

Also Carl828 just got back from riding around Lake City and has an awesome rr over in after the ride. He used this book http://www.amazon.com/Trails-Guide-C.../dp/1934838039
This looks like something to have for those who shun the beaten path.
...

Thx for the link - I snagged it from Amazon. The book I have used in the past :

http://www.amazon.com/4WD-Adventures-Colorado-Peter-Massey/dp/0966567552/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312380221&sr=8-1

It really only covers the jeeping trails and passes, BUT - about half of the content in the book is history about the trails. Stories, settlements, politics, major personalities, conditions, etc - for me it makes visiting the ghost towns, abandoned mines and tunnels that much more interesting and exciting.

I will be bringing both

My son and I are interested ...... Both of us will probably ride slow compared to others.

Unfortunately we will miss this year. I under estimated the amount of time and money it would take to get two of us ready to ride (bike setup, armor, etc) so we will have to put off our trip till next year.

You all have a fantastic time!

I'm 99% in!!! My wife just granted me an early birthday gift. If all goes according to the plan I'll be leaving dfw on 08/21, getting to Ouray sometime on the 22nd. And I'll be leaving Saturday the 27th. I'll bring my Husaberg But due to lack of riding experience I guess I would like to do the easier stuff.

Any one has a good idea on how to safely (I fall a lot) carry a DSLR camera while keeping it handy? I would love to bring my big Canon instead of a tiny point and shoot.

I just called the Timber Ridge Lodge, and they said that only one of our group made a reservation. am I missing something? are we all meeting someplace else?

On a different note, I was looking for a helmet cam and found the b&H photovideo have the ContourHD 1080p Full HD on sale for $150 , that's about $100 less then anyone else... I also ordered a couple of aftermarket batteries from BatteryClerk, they are $8 vs $29..

the only thing I'm still trying to figure out is what should be the card speed class (4,6,10...? )

Yeah, that was me. I booked yesterday with Morgan and she said they were not aware of a group coming up from Texas. Mike Bueller called me today to ask about how many were coming. I told him I was with George Touchton (GHT) and he remembered George and that George has already booked. Apparently, Mike has only owned the lodge for three months and says they have done some upgrades. He told me they were offering a discount for our group from $89/night to $79/night.

So, moral to this story, mention George and get a discount. I am really not sure how or even why that would work ... but it does! :-)

Its just a ruse so that mati will be the only one staying there.

Actually, I have booked also. So not sure why Timber Ridge is telling you that. Maybe they just don't know who is with who. When I booked 2 weeks ago George was also booked. And I'm pretty sure some others have booked also.

The Contour helmet cam price has dropped pretty much anywhere. Amazon has them for 145 bucks shipped. The reason for the price drop is that a new Contour is on the market--this makes three different models--and so the price has dropped way down on the first one.

Just spent the last 2 hrs spooning on a d606 in preparation for our trip. If I should have a flat on our trip and u see me on the side with tire irons in hand I'm asking that u have a little compassion for me. I'm not asking that u stop and help. I'm asking for something more simple. Pls drop your bike into 1 gear lower than you're currently in, pin the throttle, and finish me off!

I freakin' hate changing tires and fixing flats!!!

On a lighter note don't forget your swim trunks. The hot springs pool is just down the road f where we're staying.

Chad check this product out www.tubliss.com I run these on my 530. If you do have a flat with this system you've got a small hole in the tire probably. This can be repaired with a plug (repair strings) and you dont have to remove the wheel from the bike. If for some reason you cant get it plugged you can ride a tire completly flat and not worry about rolling the tire off the wheel.
No more pinch flats, which account for 80% of flat tires.

FYI for those that freakin hate changing tires and fixing flats!

That looks interesting but at $200 for both wheels, I can buy a lot of inner tubes!! Would be tempted at half that price but for the moment it's too expensive for me!! I don't mind changing tubes but prefer to run tubeless if the price was right as puncture repairs are easier..

Thats good information.....for the most part on a bike its typically easier. I think last year the "Steps" seemed to cause more concearn and got some people a bit knotted up, and for good reason that 4000 ft/+ drop on the left side of the trail will pucker ya up a bit!

Black Bear really isn't too tough. I thought everyone did a great job on it last year. About 10 years ago I stupidly did Black Bear backwards on a DR 350 and the steps were absolutely brutal.

I can't remember the name of it but Fjrrider, okdq, and I hit a trail last year that was super tough. It was fairly tough at the first but doable. Then it turned into nothing but loose baby heads on a really steep incline. Okdq was smart enough to stay at the bottom. I went about 1/16 of the way up before realizing that the wrr was too heavy and underpowered to make a good run at it. Fjrrider prob made it up 3/4 the way before turning around. If anyone is looking to test their mettle it's the trail to do it on. I'm sure fjrrider will chime in with the name of it.

In Radical's defense, about 80% of the problem was he was riding a 250, jetted for sea-level (maybe below sea level, LSUan, that he is), with maybe 50% of it's normal horsepower. The other 20% was he was motoring about 2 gears too high. I think there were 'other issues' too that influenced their decision to turn back.

You're absolutely right. His bike was waaayyyy down on power. Even though okdq and I were on 250s along with Chuck ours are fuel injected and I'd bet that gave us twice the power chuck's klx had. He was definitely having to work twice as hard as most of us.

I have my bike geared fairly low and I had to ride the redline in second gear to make it up alot of trails. Prob w riding really high in the rpm range is the rocks underneath you get pretty slick when you're going all out. Riding in the mountains really makes the case for having a 400 or 450 cc bike. The low end torque is much easier to put to the ground when you're not redlining.

Btw, check out Chucks other YouTube vids if you haven't seen them. He made a great Ouray vid.

I've rode a good bit of single track down around the Creede/South Fork areas. I know of some S/T up towards Delta and Montrose and some south of Telluride (Calico) I've never rode any of this but am more than willing to to do so.
I would just like to say this to the guys coming to Ouray......If you dont feel real comfortable with the harder jeep trails around (Imogene, Black Bear, begining of Engineer, the governor loop etc...) the S/T stuff could easily become a bit of a nightmare for the inexperienced.
Inevitably not all the riders will go out together (theres just too many) so know where your groups headed before you leave!

If you'll remember last year the first time I tried to go up Imogene I didn't make it either. Even tho our 250's are FI, with my fat **** on it just couldn't do it! Put a one tooth smaller counter sprocket on it that evening and it made a world of difference.

The spot where Chuck has his get-off is just below the pass and air is THIN. I'd like to know what % of HP is lost right there. My poorly jetted and stock geared 650 would hardly pull itself getting started. Very frustrating.

FWIW...I'm planning to ride several gulches this year. Minnie, Maggie, Cuba, etc. Getting to them means either running east through Hurricane and California gulch or going over Engineer or through Cinnamon pass. Seems like all roads lead to Animas Forks. Kinda like the Atlanta airport. Don't know if these are any less technical than the high passes but we'll find out.

First ride Monday might be a good time to run Ophir Pass over to Telluride, lunch, and then Last Dollar Rd. up to Rigway and take the backroad along the river down to Ouray. Seems like a good warm-up ride and help let us noobs see what "easy" feels like. The "Young-Fast and Fearless" crew could run from Telluride over Imogene back to Ouray. Just thinking outloud.

Whatever! Lets Ride ! :rider:

If you'll remember last year the first time I tried to go up Imogene I didn't make it either. Even tho our 250's are FI, with my fat **** on it just couldn't do it! Put a one tooth smaller counter sprocket on it that evening and it made a world of difference.

Do you weigh more than Chuck???:ponder: I kid, I kid!!!

Duane's right about gearing. If you're on the fence gear down. Top end is not necessary in the mountains.

Just for fun who is the least prepared for this trip at the moment?

I was talking w/ OKDQ and he and I still have pieces that belong on the bike laying on the floor and we're scheduled to leave Sat. morning.

I guess I will be the least prepared... I opened the Carb yesterday trying to figure out what jets i have in , when I found dirt in the upper part of the carb, so i stayed until pass midnight yesterday talking everything a part and cleaning the entire thing. now the carb and starter are back in place, but I still need to put the fuel tank on to make sure there are no leaks and the bike runs....

I know last year we would casually roll in around 8:30 or maybe 9 to the Timber Ridge Inn. Not positive about these times but I think that's right???

GHT
08-17-2011, 02:57 PM
Yes, Timber Ridge will be the meet-up place, as far as time, sometime around 8 or 9 is good for most, normally it's a little cool in the mornings and depending on the days route, there could be 30 minutes of highway before getting off-road, so a little later is better! We will play it by ear once we get there!
Everybody be careful on their trips and looking forward to meeting you all!!!!

Fuel tank dilemma?? I used to have a 3. something gallon tank for my KTM but it split wide open on me a while back. I picked up a ridiculously ginormous Acerbis 6.6 gallon tank that came up on CL that was so cheap I couldnt pass up. Well for safety's sake I went ahead and mounted up the 6.6 gallon tank, but in looking it over I really dont like where the left sided petcock is located. One drop to the left side and that thing is as good as gone. I know I know just dont fall but sometimes... well you know.

I'm thinking about just sticking with the stock tank. I have 1 msr liter bottle and could grab another before rolling out of town tomorrow.

Thought???

Thanks....Jeff

As long as we have some KLR tankers in tow, you should be fine with the stock tank and a section of tubing!!!!

We've had an awesome week of riding. But, as good as the mountains and trails are around Ouray, they pale in comparison to the quality of folks that made this trip the privilege and adventure that it's been. Thanks guys.

Most of us are headed home in the morning. I'll be glad to get there...cept for the heat. Going to have to readjust to not starting each day with the rumble of a line of bikes dashing down the million dollar highway toward the trails each morning. Beautiful sound in the chilly air.

OK guys, had a little get-off today on Corkscrew, near the top, second to the last switchback, left hander, got a little too far to the inside got into some loose stuff, nailed the throttle (per previous instructions), caught a hidden boulder which tossed me hard to the left, over the top and down to the trail below me!!!:eek2: Holy Crap that was fast!!! :eek2::eek2:Tumbled down the hill for 10 or 15 feet, mostly on my head!!! Bike flipped at least twice, landed facing the wrong direction on the trail I had just come up!!! Tore a fingernail back and bruised the tips of two of my fingers, don't ask cause I don't know how, other than that and a little strawberry on my right hip I'm fine! Picked up the bike, cleaned my drawers out, and finished the run!!! It's all good! There was a Jeep full of old guys that saw it, they said it was pretty spooky looking!!!

I'm finally home... Wanted to thank all of you guys for making this trip so much fun, It was real pleasure meeting all of you!

I want to take the opportunity and thank a few of the guys I rode with. They are all excellent people, and you just can't appreciate how good they are over the internet...
-Stan (Stan817) that saved my first day riding by fixing my main jet, and then stayed with me in the back and rode my bike where I couldn't on the "lost creek trail"
-Rob (rydah) that hanged back with me on the top of Black Bear Pass (B.B.P) and rode his XR as if it was a bicycle just so he can escort me and guide me down the pass after my clutch broke, -R.G that came to my rescue and walked my bike down the infamous rock section of B.B.P
-Joe, Larry, Terry and Scott for welcoming me to their riding group and been so patience with me even though my riding level and speed are so low. They always waited on me and encouraged me and never complained about me slowing them down.
And to Gorge (GHT) that gave up the second half of the ride and rode 50 miles on the highway (on top of a stock KTM seat) just to escort me back to Ouray after we got off B.B.P. and for getting this ride together.

A truly phenomenal group of people - Thank you!
