Ok, I'll say it: Is there a reason we have the pie run so early instead of, say, 2pm so that people have more time to get there and don't always have to rush?

wczimmerman

Ok, I'll say it: Is there a reason we have the pie run so early instead of, say, 2pm so that people have more time to get there and don't always have to rush?

Well, in the case of the Koffee Kup, it's to beat the local rush which happens around 2PM. With limited seating and our often large numbers, we would either have unhappy locals or unhappy riders as we waited for seating. As for the other locations, much the same: beat the local crowds and get home with some time left in the day. The rotation to the different locations was supposed to ease the departure times for those closest to the event.

Does this help?

I hate mornings also, one of the reasons that I didn't make the Edom trip this time.

In the fall/winter, it allows most to get home before it gets too dark and the critters come out (in most cases) to sacrifice themselves. If we were to meet at 2 then in most cases we wouldn't leave until about 4 pm and that would put those who travel far right through the country when the sun is going down.

I know I was coming home from the Test Pie Run to Hico on New Years Eve in the dark and it got dark and cold quick (it was real nice during the day) and a little spooky out there looking for those glowing eyes in the dark.

Just another thought.

We may be there, it depends on what time the Tech-Baylor game in Waco is since Naomi wants to go to that game.

I think it would be more of an Unnatural disaster - ever see a hurricane form over land & rotating clockwise in the northern hemisphere? That is what would happen...

I had no luggage on the January pie run - just bungied the pie box to the rear rack (I have bungied a sack of dog food on the ZR's rear sear, too) - the pie even survived a tip-over on an FM road!

Just make sure it's a more solid pie. I attempted to haul a strawberry pie back home in my Givi topcase at the last Hico meet. It made it home, but it didn't look much like a pie when I pulled it out. After a brief stop in the fridge, it was certainly edible though... Lesson learned? Anyone? I haven't been over there in months.

Okay, I needed to get out of the home/office so I ran over to check out the 1431/183 intersection. It is better. You don't have to go over a dirt section on 1431 on the west side of 183. Still is some lane rerouting though. Coming from north or south 183 will be fine, or coming east on 1431. Only pain I see is heading west on 1431 and that is because there is only a flashing yellow with no left turn lane to turn up into the TC area.

Have fun heading out this weekend. I have to move gravel and turn tops. Might try to slip over to see you off though.

Oh yeah, I managed to have one of those longer than planned rides too. Got distracted and ended up turning south off of 1431 a couple of lights past 183...you know, the curvy road that goes by the lake :) Anyway, I've never gone that way down Lime Creek and it was a little harder, I think. Specially with the view. The lake is much more obvious.

Kidder, man frugal is one thing but that just looks scary. That pony needs new shoes.

Blue Bomber and jetblue,

I'm still working on my trip report from last weekend but suffice it to say that I thought the tire had a lot more life in it than it did. When I realized that it wasn't going to get me back to DFW, I searched for a dealership. However, most dealerships in the area we were in close @ 2 (not 4, like in DFW). So, I was screwed. I did run across a Honda dealership that closed @ 6 but they refused to work on my bike. They said they could only work on Hondas. So, I made it to Hot Springs with belt showing in one small spot. I called my dad and he said he could meet us in Texarkana. So, I did the rest of the damage to that tire on the slab from Hot Springs to Texarkana. It does look pretty bad, doesn't it?!

Okay.. so who from DFW is heading out? I'll help organize a departure from the Plano area if anyone is interested. :-P
I'm down. Coming from Denton. But what sort of route are you thinking. I'm not too in to the long highway rides. Any back roads you know of?

I haven't seen any west-side or south meeting points agreed to yet. So, I'll propose one in the hopes that it will prime the pump.

Talked with Susan (tortuga) last night and she probably won't make it - very tough couple of weeks & she may just sleep in again.

I think that I will try the same Hico route again that we took last time, although I am not planning to miss FM51 again. We won't be too fast and faster riders can go ahead if they wish. How about meeting at the Minyards at I20 & Green Oaks at 8 AM - LeMans start at 8:15... At least that might get some others to offer alternates...

We could also link up with folks in Granbury if that is convenient...

General route - US287 slab to FM157 (Mansfield) to FM917 to SH171 (Godley) to FM2331 to FM4 to us377 to FM144 to FM51 to US67 (possibly FM203, FM927 if time permits) to SH220 to SH6 to the KK. Have a slightly different route back.

Judd (Kidder) had a good route starting in Venus at FM157 and US67. I have details on this one as well (they are also in the Pie Run archives). Venus is another good concentration point.

Any interest?

Well, looks like its time for me to buy a map. :-? I will meet ya'll somewhere along that route. I know where Venus is :clap but are you actually gonna pass through there I can't remember the road I was on in Venus.

Well I suppose I am off to get that map......

Please remove me from the list of attendees. I had an accident this morning on my way to work. I'll post more information and some pictures soon. I'm in okay shape, but my bike looks pitiful. If you were in NC, it's not quite as bad as Toms but will cost more to fix.

Then we will head to Venus. Plan on being in Venus by 9:30am. If anyone wants to join us at that time... please let me know, and let me know a specific location. Otherwise, we will just head out to Hico from there after a brief stop in Venus.

If you have the need to PM me, I might not get until the morning, so include a cell phone number.

The scenic route is to take Green Oaks off of 360 (also the Carrier exit) and take it around to the west. Has some nice sweeping curves. Hang a left at Eastchase (I think it is Meadowbrook at that point) - it will eventually become Green Oaks again. There is a Y where Little Road goes off to the right, just after Pleasant Ridge (Jack-in-the-Box on the left). The Minyards is on the right about 1/8 mile after the Y. Other than the left at Eastchase, the road changes names but doesn't require any turn-offs...

If you go 360 to I20 west, Green Oaks is exit 445 - about 8 miles west of 360...

See you there...

Well, it looks like we'll meet at the Minyards and head down to Venus.

Don't see any routes posted after that. If we use Kidder's route, we will get into Hico too late - it may be better to ride that on the way back.

I would suggest a modification to the route I was going to use - take 67 south towards Cleburne and pick up FM4 there - take that to G-bury, FM144 exit right to FM51, south on 51. Depending on what time we hit US67, we can take 67 right to 220 to 6 to the KK or take 67 left to 203,144,917 to 6 and the KK.

I'll print up a copy of Judd's (Kidder) route (as soon as I find it)...

Here is Kidder's Route (shamelessly cut & pasted from his post on 1/13/05):

Honestly, the DFW folks could/SHOULD do a great ride. Meet up at the gas station at the corner of 67 and 157 (Venus). Then, continue south on 157, then hit twisties pretty much all the way to Hico (except for a short stint through Whitney). This route includes the spectacular FM 1238 from Cranfills Gap to Hwy 6 at Iredell. Then take 6 directly into Hico.

If people are interested in doing a twisty route at a "nice" pace, let me know and I'll probably end up going. I'm not interested in taking the slab all the way to Hico. If we met at Venus at 9am with kickstands up, we'd roll into Hico right around 11:30.

Here's the route I have in mind:

From Venus (corner of 67 and 157): Take 157 south
Turn right (west) on FM 916 to Grandview
Continue on 916 to Rio Vista
Turn left (west) on 174
Turn left (south) on FM 933 to Whitney
Turn right on 22 and go over the Whitney Dam
Turn left at Laguna Park on FM 56
Veer right onto FM 708
Turn left on FM 219 into Clifton (gas stop)
Continue on 219 to Cranfills Gap
Turn right on 22 then turn left back onto FM 219
Veer right onto FM 1238
Turn left on Hwy 6 and head to Hico
The route back can vary. I usually reverse the route. I'd be willing to lead the group to Hico (unless someone else wants to)

If you want to find it - it is on page 18 (!) of Zim's epic Central Texas Meet & Greet thread that became the First Pie Run in the history books...

Also ripped off from Yeeha Stephen's post in the same thread:

DFW folks... If it's dry, I would be remiss if I didn't remind you that when you're running down 67 to Hico, you cruise right by one of the premium MC roads us N-Texans have. FM203 South on 67 just after you leave Glen Rose, take FM203 left. (If you make it to 51 or the Chalk Mountain roadside park, you passed it.) Right on TX144, through Walnut Springs, Right on FM927, Right on TX6 in Iredell and on to Hico & ride right passed where you would have come out on TX220.

That first part of 203 is Sweet.
