Wife is getting me a Radar Detector for my b-day, if the budget is <=$500, which radar to get and why? any other radars I should know about, this is going to be for my car, I drive 5 over speed limit in the city, but usually go very fast on interstate and that is why I am getting a RD. And what about those GPS with built in Radars detectors? Your input is appreciated....

+1 on the 9500ix had mine for about 2 years and it has paid for itself many times over.

With autolearn it is eventually silent on roads you travel often so when it alerts you pay attention. The only thing I would prefer from the V1 would be the arrows, but I believe that Valentine's patent on those arrows expires soon.

I like the arrows and the bogey counter on my V1. It's really nice knowing if they are in front of you or behind you, and how many of them there are.

I've had my V1 for 5 or 6 years, so I haven't studied the market in a while. Had a high end Escort before that, but don't recall the model number. Ford/Chevy, Honda/Yamaha, red/blue... it's more about personal preference and between the two there isn't a bad choice

Based on folks I've known that have had the V1 and needed some type of service with them I vote for the V1. Good folks there for sure that take care of their customers.

I vote for the V1 as well. Like their ads say, once you get used to the arrows, you won't want to do without them. Adjust the logic setting to the "small L" position, and you eliminate most of the false alarms without compromising sensitivity, too.

I'll give you the arrows, but the Escort's bogey counter shows how many, what bands they are and what strength they are.

It's also got cool BLUE leds :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Another feature of the 9500 is when the alert goes off it also momemtraily displays your speed.

Don't forget to consider how you're going to get the alert. Without some sort of add on speaker or light you'll most likely never see those cool blue leds on the Escort, or the arrows on the V1.
I use the H.A.R.D. system

Lots of other choices here too I suspect.

With my V1 I use one of these to make sure I don't miss the alert:

and a Valentine remote display to make sure I can see the arrows:

Other options for alerting include the Radar Screamer and Radar Screamer visual alert:

I used to have one of the H.A.R.D displays, but found battery life sucked, especially when I forgot to turn it off. If you want a helmet mounted alert, take a look at the Adativ wireless modules. It's bigger, but has a better battery and turns itself off after some period of time with no motion. I'm having trouble getting to their web site, but here's a pic:

They make modules to fit both Escort and Valentine detectors.

And you may want to check out the Adaptiv Radar Detector, too. It's made specifically for motorcycles, and is waterproof.

I've been through so many of those crummy HARD systems it's rediculous. I tried a Cheetah set up but while it's much better built it still has issues as well. They have a newer version out I'm thinking of trying pretty soon.

Oh and as far as the V1/9500 issue. The V1's arrows are worth gold. No way I'd ever give those up. Not for GPS and pretty blue LED's that's for sure. :lol2:

I have a 9500ix, not mounted on the bike... yet.

However, I can attest to the fact that once you have driven your routes a handful of times with autolearn on the device gets very quiet and you can be assured that an alert has a high probability of being a real bogey.

If most of your riding is urban or suburban the 9500ix is most emphatically the way to go.

If your riding is more rural or highway driving you should definitely consider the V1 or an Escort Redline.

Any of these devices consistently win accolades for capability.

One thing to remember if you decide on the Escort line is to purchase from one of the retailers listed on their site. Sadly they have a minimum advertised price and although you can find an Escort for under that price it may be a knockoff.

V1 with a Screamer. Valentine offers service updates and such for life, so you can get updated stuff when new speed systems show up.

I bought a wiring kit through eBay to hard wire my 9500ix to my truck with a remote mute button on the central console. I took the suction cups off the mount and used some 3M DualLock to attach it to the windshield up by the rear view mirror.
