Howdy,
:tab Okay, let's get a show of hands from the people that will be going, regardless of which days of the weekend. I will try to get that weekend off and head up Friday evening, do the show sometime Saturday, then head home Sunday. If any of the DFW area folks would be willing to host a get together, or plan one somewhere, that would be really cool *wink wink, nudge nudge* If you go to the show, I'll be the goof ball running around the parking lot putting TWT cards on everyone's bike.
Adios,
STCPO

Kim and I plan to attend on Saturday. Scott, your welcome to stay here with us Friday and Saturday night. We can offer you the guest room and we still have a fold out couch in the game room for anyone else coming up who needs a place to stay.
If people don't mind driving up to McKinney, Saturday night we can do some burgers, chicken, etc on the grill for anyone who wants to come on over.

Dangit!!! I'll be on my way to Copper Canyon. Scott, I'll send you a shopping list. And...take pictures of the new bikes!

Hmmm.... I know where I'd rather be :-(
By the way, we are heading your way for Halloween weekend. I'm coming as a biker. :-P Will says his house should be done by then. Sounds like an excuse to party! We're gonna head out to Kerrville Sat morning to hook up with the HSTA folks for their Hill Country Rally and then ride back to Austin Sat night. Hopefully, I will have Beth's bike back together by then... don't ask.
Adios,

Can't make it. Going gigging for flounder on the coast.
Spill it! Lemme guess...
a) you went down in a left hand turn on your way to King's
b) you dropped the bike going down the driveway
c) you dropped the bike going up the driveway

I am hoping to be able to go. Don't know if I will be caging or go up on the bike. I would prefer to ride (depending on the weather) but if my son comes along we'll need to take his car.

*BZZZZTTT* None of the above ;-)
:tab She parked it on the road and left it in nuetral with the engine running. When she went inside to close the garage door (electric), she came out and found it laying over on its' right side in the gutter with fluids pouring out of it :-( The road has a nasty crown. Also, the drop from the pavement edge to the concrete gutter is probably an inch and a half. I speculate that it rolled back until the back tire landed in the gutter causing the kickstand on the pavement to push the bike over.
:tab It was laying down hill so she could not pick it up. After watching her for a few minutes, one of our college kid neighbors finally offered to get her boyfriend to come outside and help Beth pick it up. The road was recently chip sealed so there are butt loads of deep gravel scratches all up the right side fairing :tears:
:tab Lots of the expected damage to mirror, brake lever, turn signal, blah blah blah... Probably around $350-$400 to make like new. Beth was not a happy camper when I got home! Oh well... just one more thing to worry about hehe. Next...
Adios,

As for the show. I am in. Either Saturday (preffered) or Sunday. Missed last year, wont miss this one.
As for the Blue Bomber, man, I am sorry to hear all that. I love that blue and I know you guys put a lot of effort in to it. Hope you can get it back in peak shape soon.

Ahh, crud! Beth's VFR is such a good-looking bike too. :(
Watch out guys, it seems to be the season for tip-overs - I let my bike drop while unloading it from the truck a couple of weeks ago.

I wasn't really thinking we'd all go up together, just that we might pick a time to all meet somewhere. Txcpl has a good idea, but how far out is McKinney? Is there anyone closer in with a place that can host a get together? Maybe we could just order pizza to keep it simple and do dinner Saturday evening around 6-7pm?
Adios,
STCPO
10-15-2003, 10:50 PM
McKinney is about 36 miles from the Convention Center. Pretty much a direct shot south on 75 to downtown. Takes about 20 - 30 minutes to get downtown with Saturday traffic.

Would you be up to hosting a get together in the evening?
Adios,
Yes would be our pleasure. We plan on getting to the show first thing Saturday morning. Anytime after 5:00 we could do the grill thing or pizza. The more that come the merrier.
Whoever wants to come on over just PM us. The offer for a place to crash for a few folks is also still open.

That just makes me sick :puke:
It's one thing to crash or do something stupid so your friends can give you grief but something like this is just plain heartache.
I'm sure Beth is just torn up. Tell her I'll pop for some nail polish

I have my final on the 22nd. So, I'll be ready to blow off some steam. The motorcycle show sounds like a good excuse to do just that. I'm in for the after show get-together. I will probably be going to the show around 2 (after my exam).

Hey Kidder,
:tab Were you out riding Monday around 5:30-6:00pm on the Southbound feeder of US 75? We were hauling back from our recent trip up to Arkansas/Missouri and saw a guy on a V-Strom (not sure if 650 or 1000) cruising along, weaving back and forth in his lane. I could not remember where you lived though. Mansfield is on the South side of DFW? We were still up by McKinney I think.
Adios,
Kidder
10-21-2003, 01:48 PM
Nope, not me. I was riding south down 360 heading home. Mine's a silver 1000, BTW. Also, the 650s aren't out yet. However, the easiest way to distinguish the 650s from the 1000s is that the 650s only have an exhaust pipe on the right side.
I finally broke through the 500 mile break-in barrier and now get to open it up to 7k RPM. WOW! Talk about a flat torque curve! If any of you get your truck or tractor stuck in a ditch, let me know. I'll come pull it out with the Strom.
Oh, and Mansfield is just south of Arlington.

10-24-2003, 03:32 PM
Howdy,
:tab So where do we stand? Txcpl, we'll probably stay down on the South side of town in Cedar Hill. However, I would be happy to come up for the evening. How about putting up the street address so we can plop it into a mapping program to find you? I would say we should get a head count on how many people will show up Saturday evening after 6:00pm. We can order pizza after they start arriving. BYOB. Doing the pizza thing keeps you from having to buy a bunch of food and being stuck with a huge grovery bill if no one shows up.

I'm still trying to figure what would be best for me.
I got this advice from a guy who attended last year...
"A really sweet time is Friday evening. The masses coming in from out of town don't show that early. Downside... there's not enough time friday evening, you'll want to come back Saturday.
Saturdays are packed. Well, so is Sunday. One hint I can give, is that if you want to be among the first ones in, get there WAY before the 10 am opening. However, the line to get in, thins out in about an hour and you can walk right in. The biggest crowd, is the one to get in at the opening bell.
If you really want to dig into some of the booths, be prepared to stay all day. If you're just eyeballing bikes, you can be done in a couple of hours. "
I don't want to stay two nights. I also want to avoid riding 3 hours back to Lufkin in the dark on Saturday night when all the drunks are on the roads.
I guess best for me would be to leave Lufkin about 7:30am Saturday morning, arrive at the show about 11:00am, browse all day, then crash at my friend's house off Jupiter road Saturday night, and ride home Sunday morning.
( Wait, then I'd have to contend with the blue-hair church crowd. Almost as bad as the DWI crowd. :) )

They are playing a demo of fast in ballroom a I might help with the load in of that. (Work for the av company that the gear is coming from)

Considering the gorgeous weather I'm thinking about riding to Dallas on Saturday. I guess I would have Saturday afternoon to visit the fair. This would leave enough time to get back to Austin (although not a pleasant ride). On the other hand, if I could secure a place to stay over night (Pete?) I could return on Sunday morning. However, I'm not sure where to leave the my stuff while enjoying the fair if I ride the bike. If I return the same day I just bring what I wear.

Howdy,
:tab The show was okay, nothing spectacular. We got in at Pete & Kim's sometime around 10:30pm Friday night. Stayed up way late. Got up, went out to breakfast, then rode the DART train right down to the Convention center. Very convenient for a mere $2.50 all day. By 1:00pm, there were already TONS of bikes parked outside with more pouring in by the minute. I enjoyed checking out the bikes in the parking lots nearly as much as the show itself. Of course, we left TWT cards on everyone's bikes  Around 5:30pm we found Achim, then decided to head over to Baker's BBQ on Greenville to meet with another group of friends for dinner rather than going back up to Pete's place. The food was great and there was a nice sized group of people. We left around 9:00pm when they started turning the lights out on us, hehe. We walked a block back over to the train station and rode back up to McKinney. We found Achim waiting on the front porch, apparently his ride up US 75 was a little quicker than the train  Then we stayed up way way late... and got up late... Achim took off aroun 11:30am or so. It was a pretty day, but it was chilly and very windy. We just got back into Huntsville about twenty minutes ago. We had a great time. Pete and Kim are great hosts. I look forward to seeing them again. We never even tried to see the Faster flick. $15 just to see it rubbed me a little the wrong way ;-) I'll just get the DVD eventually.

A few other bikes caught my eye, too. First was the VTR Superhawk with the new black paint scheme and gold wheels. Yes, it only amounts to re-packaging an older model, but it really looked sharp. If Honda would only do something about the poor fuel consumption/range of that bike, I might seriously consider buying one.
The Yamaha FZ6 looks like a winner; a choice between it and the new (to the states anyway) Honda 599 wouldn't be hard for me. The FZ has ergos that are equally good, with the added benefit of a nice 1/4 fairing. And except for the slightly chunky-looking swingarm, the FZ is just a nicer-looking bike, IMHO.
Speaking of good-looking bikes, the Norton America 952 Commando on display was absolutely gorgeous. What a sweet bike that one is. I hope Kenny Dreer is successful in his attempt to revive the Norton marque with this radically revised and modernized Commando. It's a beautiful beast!
If you like the Norton, but can't afford the projected $20k+ price tag, the new Triumph 900 Thruxton might be the logical alternative. Pictures really don't do it justice; if you're a fan of the classic Cafe Racer look, you'll love this bike. The reverse-cone megaphone pipes (without the oddly kinked header of the parent Bonneville) look just right. The low bars and solo seat complete the look. Some people have criticized the lack of a second front disk brake on the Thruxton, but this bike isn't intended to perform on the level of a current sportbike anyway. Overall, thumbs up on this one.

Like Scott, I'd also like to extend my sincere thanks and compliments to our hosts Pete and Kim Russo. The generosity they showed in opening their home to a housefull of people they'd never met face-to-face before took a little courage and I hope that we earned your trust. Thank you so much, guys! :)

After recovering from the freezing ride from Dallas to Austin I'd also like thank our hosts Kim and Pete. Great breakfast! Without the coffee it would have been much harder to face 4 hour ride in the cold.
Thanks again!

I took some photos at the Dallas MC Show. I thought I'd share them. There are 37 photos in all (see the two links below). I tried to get photos of most of the new models (2004) plus a couple of my personal favorites.
Enjoy!
